BBQ in Greater Milwaukee: The Definitive Guide

Milwaukee’s BBQ scene is deeper than most people realize. The area blends old-school soul food traditions, supper club ribs, Texas-style brisket pop-ups, food trucks, suburban smokehouses and even Korean barbecue, giving families plenty of ways to turn a casual meal into a local food adventure.

This guide covers classic Milwaukee BBQ, food trucks, family-friendly suburban spots, North Shore options and road-trip-worthy stops across southeastern Wisconsin. For more local dining ideas, see our Food and Drinks Guide, our guide to Greater Milwaukee’s best food halls and markets, and our complete Milwaukee food truck guide.

Milwaukee’s Legendary Soul Food BBQ

The city’s most storied BBQ joints are not trying to be Austin or Kansas City. They are Milwaukee institutions with their own history, loyal customers and signature flavors.

Speed Queen Bar-B-Que — 1130 W. Walnut Street, Milwaukee

Speed Queen has been part of Milwaukee BBQ history since 1956. The signature order is pork shoulder, especially the “outside” cut, served in classic no-frills Milwaukee BBQ style. This is a counter-service, drive-through, sauce-heavy, napkin-required kind of place.

Speed Queen is especially good for takeout, family meals and anyone who wants a taste of old-school Milwaukee barbecue. Current hours are Monday and Tuesday 11 a.m.–8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m.–10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.–midnight. Closed Sundays.

Ashley’s Bar-B-Que — 1501 W. Center Street, Milwaukee

Ashley’s has been serving soul food and traditional pit barbecue since 1961. The restaurant is known for ribs, chicken, collard greens and Milwaukee-famous Ashley Fries, which are topped with shredded pork shoulder, cheese sauce, peppers and barbecue sauce.

This is a strong pick for rib tips, shoulder, soul food sides and a classic neighborhood BBQ experience.

Pitch’s Lounge & Restaurant — 1801 N. Humboldt Avenue, Milwaukee

Pitch’s is a different kind of BBQ stop: a longtime Milwaukee supper-club-style restaurant known for ribs, fish fry, steak night and a cozy East Side atmosphere. It is more sit-down dinner than quick BBQ counter, with evening hours Wednesday through Sunday.

Families are welcome, but this is best for older kids, grandparents, date night or a slower dinner rather than a fast takeout run.

Best Sit-Down BBQ in the Milwaukee Area

Double B’s BBQ — 7412 W. Greenfield Avenue, West Allis

Double B’s is one of the most acclaimed BBQ restaurants in the Milwaukee area, with brisket, ribs, burnt ends, smoked meats, house sauces and a dedicated kids’ menu. It has been recognized nationally by Yelp and locally as one of Wisconsin’s standout barbecue spots.

The restaurant is casual and family-friendly, with a menu that works well for both BBQ purists and kids who want a burger, mac and cheese or something familiar. Current hours are Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m.–9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Smoke Shack — 332 N. Milwaukee Street, Historic Third Ward

Smoke Shack brings barbecue into the Third Ward with slow-smoked meats, bourbon, cocktails, brunch and patio-friendly energy. It is a great option before or after a downtown outing, a Public Market stop, a Third Ward stroll or a family visit to one of Milwaukee’s central attractions.

The menu includes brisket, pulled pork, ribs, smoked wings, sides and weekend brunch. For families exploring downtown, pair it with our guide to Greater Milwaukee’s best food halls and markets.

Smoke Shack

DOC’s Commerce Smokehouse — 754 N. Vel R. Phillips Avenue, Milwaukee

DOC’s Commerce Smokehouse serves Southern-style barbecue downtown, with hickory-smoked meats, craft beer and a convenient location near entertainment venues, hotels and events. It is a good pre-event dining option if you are headed downtown and want something more filling than concessions.

Smokin’ Jack’s BBQ: Three Milwaukee Locations

Smokin’ Jack’s BBQ has grown into one of the area’s most visible BBQ names, with locations at 3rd Street Market Hall, Brown Deer and Murray Avenue on Milwaukee’s East Side.

3rd Street Market Hall — 275 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee

This location is a strong choice for families because everyone can split up and order from different food hall vendors. Smokin’ Jack’s brings brisket, pulled pork, ribs, wings and barbecue sides into a kid-friendly downtown food hall setting.

Brown Deer — 6807 W. Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee

The Brown Deer location is a convenient North Shore-area takeout option, especially for families in Brown Deer, Mequon, Glendale, Fox Point and Bayside.

Murray Avenue — 2311 N. Murray Avenue, Milwaukee

The newer East Side location gives Smokin’ Jack’s a true neighborhood restaurant presence near the UWM area. This is a good one to watch for brisket, smoked wings, rib tips and East Side dining.

Milwaukee BBQ Food Trucks and Pop-Ups

Food trucks are where some of the area’s most exciting BBQ is happening. Schedules change often, so always check the business’s current social media before driving across town.

Sweet Smoke BBQ

Sweet Smoke is one of the top names for Texas-style BBQ in Milwaukee, especially for brisket. It has built a loyal following through pop-ups, brewery appearances and smoked-meat-focused events. If you love brisket, this belongs high on the list.

Firewise Barbecue Company

Firewise is a West Allis-based BBQ food truck, catering operation and competition team. Its regular rotation includes Menards in West Milwaukee, Elliot’s Ace Hardware in West Allis, Menards in Waukesha and Menards in Franklin, usually from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until sold out.

This is a good option for families who want classic barbecue without a sit-down restaurant experience. It also works well for party catering.

Wilma’s Smokehouse

Wilma’s Smokehouse is a Menomonee Falls-area food truck known for smoked meats, roadside-style barbecue and seasonal appearances. Check its truck tracker or Facebook page before heading out.

The Smokin’ C’s BBQ — Grafton-based

The Smokin’ C’s BBQ serves Ozaukee County and nearby communities through a mobile schedule and special events. Its 2026 calendar includes appearances at Eats & Beats in Thiensville, Hops & Hounds in Germantown, Mel’s Charities Concours Car Show in Port Washington and Creekside Valley Pumpkin Farm in Mequon.

Waukesha County and Western Suburbs

LD’s BBQ — 2511 Main Street, East Troy

LD’s BBQ is worth the drive for families who like road-trip food stops. The restaurant smokes meats over 100% seasoned oak wood and is known for ribs, brisket, chicken and classic sides.

Current hours are Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.–8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday. It is especially convenient if you are heading toward East Troy, Alpine Valley, Mukwonago or Lake Geneva.

Just Smokin’ Barbecue — 20316 W. Main Street, Lannon

Just Smokin’ Barbecue is a year-round restaurant in Lannon with a seasonal food trailer from April through October. The menu focuses on slow-smoked meats, homemade sides and catering-friendly BBQ. It is a practical option for families in Menomonee Falls, Sussex, Germantown and the Lake Country area.

Mission BBQ — Brookfield, West Allis and Kenosha

Mission BBQ is a fast-casual chain with Wisconsin locations including Brookfield, West Allis and Kenosha. It is easy with kids, quick for groups and predictable for families who want brisket, pulled pork, turkey, chicken, sausage, sides and multiple sauces.

Restaurant hours are generally Monday through Saturday 11 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday 11:30 a.m.–8 p.m., with holiday exceptions.

Famous Dave’s — Brookfield and Greenfield

Famous Dave’s has area locations in Brookfield and Greenfield. It is a dependable family-restaurant option with ribs, brisket, pulled pork, chicken, sides and kids’ menu choices. The Brookfield location is especially useful for families already headed to shopping, sports or activities in the Bluemound Road corridor.

Racine and Kenosha BBQ

Hillery’s Kenosha Bar-B-Q — 7613 Sheridan Road, Kenosha

Hillery’s is a classic Kenosha BBQ stop known for ribs, rib tips and old-school takeout energy. It is best treated as a no-frills, local institution rather than a polished sit-down restaurant. Bring cash or check current payment details before you go.

Dragon Pit BBQ — 322 6th Street, Downtown Racine

Dragon Pit BBQ serves craft barbecue, fried chicken, comfort food and catering from downtown Racine. The restaurant recommends checking Facebook for the latest food truck pop-ups or restaurant closing information, which is always a good idea before making a longer drive.

Newer and Evolving BBQ Spots

Flava House — 5507 W. North Avenue, Milwaukee

Flava House opened in the former Heaven’s Table BBQ space after Heaven’s Table ended its six-year run. The new restaurant continues the barbecue tradition in the North Avenue building, with input from Heaven’s Table pitmaster Jason Alston and a menu built around smoked meats, fried chicken, fish and soul food.

Flava House is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with counter service and limited seating.

Jericho’s BBQ — Farwell Avenue area, Milwaukee

Jericho’s BBQ brings a long-running Milwaukee barbecue story to the East Side. Owner Jericho Shaw has been serving Milwaukee for decades, and the Farwell Avenue location gives his barbecue a more permanent neighborhood presence. Look for ribs, wings, pork shoulder and comfort sides.

North Shore and Nearby BBQ Options

The North Shore does not have as many traditional smokehouses as the city of Milwaukee, but families still have several BBQ-adjacent options close to home.

The Bay Restaurant — 342 E. Silver Spring Drive, Whitefish Bay

The Bay is not a full-time BBQ restaurant, but it has a Saturday-only BBQ menu from 5–9 p.m. while supplies last. The menu includes hickory-smoked baby back ribs and a combo with ribs, pulled pork and lemon pepper smoked wings. This is a nice local option if you want barbecue without leaving Whitefish Bay.

Nino’s Southern Sides — Shorewood and Fox Point

The Shorewood location is at 4475 N. Oakland Avenue, and the business has also promoted a Fox Point location at 8775 N. Port Washington Road.

Bawi Korean BBQ — 6107 W. Mequon Road, Mequon
