Free Native Wisconsin Trees Available to Fox Point Residents

Free trees

Families looking to add shade, beauty and environmental benefits to their yard have a great opportunity this June. Big Plant, in partnership with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and Sweet Water, is giving away free native Wisconsin trees during the Village of Fox Point Open House on Saturday, June 13, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

The free tree giveaway is part of a regional effort to plant thousands of trees across the Milwaukee area as a natural way to manage stormwater, reduce flooding and improve water quality in local rivers and Lake Michigan.

How to get a free tree

Pre-registration is required to reserve a free tree. Residents should register in advance and scroll down to “Municipal Events” to find the Village of Fox Point Open House tree giveaway.

Trees will be available in 1-to-3-gallon containers and are expected to be about 3 to 5 feet tall. Each household is limited to one free tree.

The trees must be picked up during the Open House on June 13. Trees will not be held after the event, so make sure you can attend before registering. When you pick up your tree, you will also receive an informational flyer with care instructions.

Program requirements

There are a few important requirements to know before signing up:

Only residents in eligible zip codes can receive a free tree.

Each household may receive one free tree.

Trees must be planted within eligible watershed areas.

Renters must have permission to plant a tree on the property.

Supplies are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Discounted trees also available

In addition to the free tree, participants may also have the option to purchase additional trees at a 20% discount when signing up.

These discounted trees are larger than the free trees and will come in 4-to-5-gallon containers. They will also be about 3 to 5 feet tall and will be delivered to the Fox Point Open House for pickup.

Just like the free trees, discounted trees must be picked up during the Open House and will not be held afterward.

Why trees matter

This giveaway is about more than adding greenery to local yards. Trees play an important role in protecting the environment, especially in communities near rivers and Lake Michigan.

Trees help absorb and slow stormwater runoff, which can reduce flooding and help keep polluted runoff from reaching local waterways. Over time, more trees throughout the region can make a real difference for neighborhoods, rivers and Lake Michigan.
