Mequon Opens Electronics Recycling Site at Public Works

Mequon residents now have a convenient place to recycle old televisions, computers, cell phones and other household electronics.

The City of Mequon has opened a new electronics collection site at the Department of Public Works, located at 10800 N. Industrial Drive. The drop-off area is available 24 hours a day and is monitored by security cameras.

The site opened after Mequon was approved June 1 as an electronics collector through E-Cycle Wisconsin, a program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Enter through the south driveway and follow the brown signs marked for electronics recycling. The collection bins are on the south side of the property near the fueling pumps.

Electronics may be dropped off at any time of day. COM2, the city’s electronics recycling vendor, will collect and process the accepted items.

Electronics Accepted in Mequon

The new site accepts many common consumer electronics, including:

• Televisions

• Desktop and laptop computers

• Computer monitors

• Tablets

• Printers

• Cell phones

• Keyboards, mice and other computer accessories

• Cords and related peripherals

• Small kitchen appliances

Before dropping off a computer, phone, tablet or another device that stores personal information, back up anything you want to keep and remove your data. Simply deleting files may not fully erase them. The Wisconsin DNR offers guidance for preparing electronics for recycling, including steps for protecting personal information.

What Is Not Accepted

The Mequon collection site cannot accept:

• Large household appliances

• Smoke detectors

• Fluorescent light bulbs

• Loose batteries

• Items not included on the city’s allowed-items list

Do not leave prohibited items next to the recycling bins. Residents should use the Wisconsin DNR’s resources to find appropriate options for battery recycling and other materials that require special handling.

Because specific products may fall into different recycling categories, residents with unusual or oversized items should contact the Mequon Department of Public Works at 262-236-2913 before making the trip.

Why Electronics Should Not Go in the Trash

Many electronics contain reusable metals, plastics and glass, along with potentially harmful materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Recycling allows valuable components to be recovered while reducing the risk of those substances contaminating soil or water.

Wisconsin law also prohibits many electronics—including televisions, computers, monitors, printers and cell phones—from being placed in household trash or sent to a landfill.

The new Mequon drop-off area gives residents a year-round option for clearing out unwanted electronics without waiting for a special collection event.
