Door County in October: The Ultimate Fall Road Trip Guide
October is when Door County fully commits to fall.
The forests surrounding Peninsula State Park turn red, orange and gold. Orchard markets fill with apples, cider and warm bakery treats. Villages celebrate with pumpkin displays, parades, arts-and-crafts fairs and hometown Halloween events. Even the drive becomes part of the adventure as Highway 42 winds beneath a canopy of changing leaves.
For Milwaukee-area families, Door County is close enough for a weekend road trip but rewarding enough for a longer fall break. The drive from Milwaukee to Sturgeon Bay takes roughly 2½ hours in normal traffic, with another 45 to 60 minutes needed to reach Fish Creek, Sister Bay or northern Door County.
Start with our complete Door County family travel guide, then use this October guide to plan around peak fall color, festivals, orchards, hiking, lighthouses and Halloween fun.
Why Visit Door County in October?
October is one of Door County’s most beautiful—and busiest—times of year.
The first half of the month usually offers the best combination of active seasonal businesses, comfortable hiking weather and developing fall color. By the middle of October, color may be near its peak across much of the peninsula. Later in the month, leaves begin dropping, temperatures turn colder and some seasonal attractions reduce their hours or close for the year.
October is especially good for families looking for:
Peak or near-peak fall color
Scenic drives and overlooks
Apple orchards and cider
Pumpkin displays and harvest festivals
Cooler hiking and biking weather
Family Halloween events
Lighthouses surrounded by fall foliage
Cozy restaurants, bakeries and fish boils
Fewer weekday crowds than summer
October weekends can be every bit as busy as July, especially during Egg Harbor’s Pumpkin Patch Festival and Sister Bay Fall Fest. Reserve lodging early and expect heavy traffic through the central and northern villages.
For current foliage reports, check the Travel Wisconsin Fall Color Report shortly before your trip.
October 2026 Festivals and Events
October brings some of Door County’s biggest annual celebrations.
Door County Fall Lighthouse Festival
October 2–4, 2026
The Door County Fall Lighthouse Festival offers special access to historic lights throughout the peninsula, including some properties that are not usually open to the public.
Tours may be offered by boat, land or air, with opportunities to visit or view locations such as Chambers Island and Plum Island. The festival encompasses all 11 of Door County’s historic lighthouses and is one of the best weekends of the year for families interested in maritime history. Tours often sell out, so advance reservations are important. (Destination Door County)
The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay serves as the event’s central organizer. Families should review age limits, walking requirements and accessibility information carefully before booking a tour.
Pair the festival with our complete Door County lighthouse guide.

Pumpkin Patch Festival — Egg Harbor
October 10–11, 2026
Egg Harbor’s Pumpkin Patch Festival is one of Door County’s signature fall weekends.
Downtown fills with live music, carnival rides, arts-and-crafts vendors, face painting, pumpkin and scarecrow displays, children’s games, food and family activities. Admission is free, although rides, food and some activities require payment. (Destination Door County)
The festival is highly family-friendly, but it is also extremely popular. Highway 42 traffic can back up well beyond the village, and the closest parking fills quickly. Arrive early, use designated satellite parking when available and avoid planning a tight schedule around the event.
Families can combine the festival with:
Egg Harbor Beach
Harbor View Park
Wood Orchard Market
Plum Loco Animal Farm
The nearby galleries and shops
A sunset along the bay
Use our Egg Harbor family guide to build out the rest of the day.

Sister Bay Fall Fest
October 16–18, 2026
Sister Bay Fall Fest celebrates its 80th year in 2026 with three days of music, food, children’s activities and community traditions.
The weekend includes more than 100 arts-and-crafts vendors, a children’s carnival, Saturday’s Fall Fest parade, a pancake breakfast, a Lions Club fish boil, the Ping Pong Ball Drop and Sunday’s derby race. The parade is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. (Destination Door County)
Fall Fest is often treated as the unofficial finale to Door County’s major tourism season. It is festive, crowded and energetic, with activities extending throughout downtown Sister Bay.
Families should expect:
Limited downtown parking
Slow traffic approaching Sister Bay
Crowded restaurants
Long waits at popular food stands
Cool and potentially windy waterfront weather
Dress in layers and bring a stroller or wagon only if you are comfortable maneuvering it through crowded streets.

Jack O’Lantern Days — Fish Creek
October 31, 2026
Fish Creek closes the month with a hometown Halloween celebration on Saturday, October 31.
Jack O’Lantern Days is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and traditionally includes a mix of children’s games, costumes, trick-or-treating and community activities throughout the village. (Destination Door County)
Fish Creek is especially atmospheric in late October. The historic buildings, wooded surroundings and walkable downtown create a setting that feels made for Halloween.
Pair the event with a daytime visit to Peninsula State Park, but leave the trails well before darkness unless you are prepared with proper lighting and cold-weather gear.

When Does Fall Color Peak in Door County?
Door County’s fall color usually develops from north to south and varies from one part of the peninsula to another.
Northern and inland forests may begin showing strong color earlier, while areas directly along Lake Michigan sometimes change more slowly because the lake moderates temperatures. The most vibrant widespread color often arrives between early and mid-October, but wind, rain, drought and overnight temperatures can move the schedule forward or backward.
A practical October breakdown:
Early October
Expect a mix of green, yellow, orange and red. Northern Door County and inland roads may be farther along than waterfront areas.
Mid-October
This is frequently the strongest period for broad fall color. It is also one of the busiest times to visit, especially around Pumpkin Patch and Fall Fest weekends.
Late October
Some trees may still be colorful, but many leaves will have fallen. The forest becomes quieter, views open through the trees and the trip takes on a more secluded, late-autumn feel.
Do not postpone a trip solely because an online tracker says the county is not at “peak.” Door County’s mix of maples, oaks, birches, evergreens and shoreline scenery means there is usually something beautiful to see throughout the month.
The Best Fall-Color Drives
Door County’s October scenery is not limited to the parks. Some of the best views appear along the roads connecting its villages, orchards and shorelines.
Door County Coastal Byway
The Door County Coastal Byway forms a loop using Highway 42 along the Green Bay side and Highway 57 along the Lake Michigan side. It connects Sturgeon Bay with Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, Baileys Harbor and several scenic natural areas.
Do not try to drive the entire route without stopping. Build a day around a portion of the byway and allow time for parks, overlooks, farm markets and village walks.
Door County Coastal Byway information
The Curvy Road Near Gills Rock
The famous winding stretch of Highway 42 appears just before the Northport ferry terminal at the northern end of the peninsula.
The curves were designed to slow traffic and create a more visually interesting approach to the end of the highway. In October, the road is framed by colorful forest and has become one of Door County’s most photographed locations.
Use the designated roadside area when available and stay completely off the roadway. Standing in the travel lanes for a photograph is dangerous, particularly when traffic is heavy.
County Road Q and County Road E
The inland roads between Baileys Harbor, Ephraim and Egg Harbor pass through forests, wetlands and less-developed countryside. These routes offer a quieter alternative to Highway 42 during festival weekends.
Glidden Drive
Glidden Drive follows part of the Lake Michigan shoreline south of Jacksonport. The road offers a peaceful mix of forest, shoreline homes and access to several natural areas.
Peninsula State Park in October
Peninsula State Park is one of Wisconsin’s most impressive fall destinations.
The park contains miles of wooded trails, shoreline overlooks, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, Nicolet Bay, a golf course and Eagle Tower. October color transforms nearly every part of the park, but it also attracts large crowds.
A Wisconsin state park vehicle admission pass is required.
Eagle Tower
Eagle Tower is one of the easiest ways to see fall color from above.
Visitors can climb the tower stairs or follow the approximately 850-foot accessible canopy walk to the observation deck. From the top, you can see the forest, Green Bay, nearby islands and the Ephraim shoreline.
Arrive early on October weekends. Parking near the tower can fill, and the canopy walk becomes crowded during peak periods.
Eagle Trail
The approximately two-mile Eagle Trail follows the base of the Niagara Escarpment beneath Eagle Tower.
It is one of Door County’s most memorable hikes, but it is also rocky, uneven and more demanding than many first-time visitors expect. Sections include roots, stone steps, narrow passages and potentially slippery surfaces.
Wear sturdy shoes and avoid the trail after heavy rain. Families with toddlers, mobility concerns or inexperienced hikers should choose an easier route.
Sentinel Trail
Sentinel Trail offers a shorter and gentler woodland hike than Eagle Trail. It is a good option for families with younger children who still want to experience the fall forest.
Sunset Bike Trail
The Sunset Bike Trail passes through forest, wetland and developed areas of the park. October riding can be beautiful, but fallen leaves may conceal roots, loose gravel and wet patches.
Check bike-rental availability before arriving because some seasonal rental operations reduce hours during October.
Eagle Panorama and Sven’s Bluff
These overlooks offer expansive views across the park and Green Bay. Sven’s Bluff is especially impressive when the surrounding forest reaches peak color.
For more options, see our guide to the best hikes in Door County.
Cave Point and Whitefish Dunes
Cave Point County Park
Cave Point County Park combines limestone cliffs, caves, forest and Lake Michigan views.
Admission is free because Cave Point is a county park rather than a Wisconsin state park.
October waves can be dramatic, especially during strong easterly winds. They can also be dangerous. Keep children away from wet rocks, exposed ledges and cliff edges. The shoreline may look calm one moment and be struck by a powerful wave the next.
The surrounding forest creates a beautiful contrast between fall foliage and the deep blue-gray water.
Whitefish Dunes State Park
Whitefish Dunes State Park is directly south of Cave Point and works well as part of the same outing.
The park includes sandy shoreline, dunes, wetlands and wooded trails. October is usually too cold for conventional beach swimming, but the beach remains a rewarding place for walking, picnicking and watching waves.
Check Wisconsin DNR alerts for any trail closures or construction before leaving home.
Newport State Park and Dark-Sky Adventures
Newport State Park near Ellison Bay is Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness state park.
Its more than 2,300 acres include forest, wetlands, shoreline and an extensive trail system. October brings vivid foliage early in the month and increasingly open forest views as leaves begin to drop.
Newport is also an International Dark Sky Park. Earlier sunsets make October one of the most practical months for families to try stargazing.
Bring:
Headlamps or flashlights with red-light settings
Blankets or camp chairs
Winter hats and gloves
Warm coats
Hot drinks in insulated containers
A downloaded map
Fully charged phones
Cell service can be unreliable, and nighttime temperatures may fall quickly. Know your route before darkness and stay on designated paths.
Potawatomi State Park
Potawatomi State Park sits northwest of Sturgeon Bay along the shore of Green Bay.
It is often overlooked by visitors rushing toward northern Door County, but October is an excellent time to explore its wooded trails and shoreline. The park also marks the eastern terminus of Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
Potawatomi can be particularly useful for families staying in Sturgeon Bay or making a shorter weekend trip. It offers a full state-park experience without driving another hour north.
Apple Orchards, Cider and Fall Treats
Door County’s October orchard season is less about cherry picking and more about apples, cider, caramel apples, pies and bakery stops.
Availability varies by weather and crop conditions, so verify current offerings before planning around a particular apple variety or pick-your-own opportunity.
Lautenbach’s Orchard Country
Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery and Market near Fish Creek combines an orchard, market, winery, bakery items and outdoor space.
October visitors may find apples, cider, wine, preserves, pies and seasonal treats. Pick-your-own availability depends on the crop and may finish before the end of the month.
The orchard becomes especially busy during festival weekends, so visit early in the day or on a weekday.
Seaquist Orchards Farm Market
Seaquist Orchards north of Sister Bay operates a large farm market with apples, cider, baked goods, jams, sauces and Door County products.
Its family activities make it more than a quick shopping stop, although hours may change later in October.
Wood Orchard Market
Wood Orchard Market near Egg Harbor is known for apple cider donuts, caramel apples, bakery items, fudge and its popular cherry salsa.
Pumpkin Patch weekend is extremely busy, so expect lines and limited parking if you combine the market with the festival.
Door County Creamery and Local Bakeries
October is a good time to slow down for coffee, baked goods and locally made food.
Depending on where you are staying, consider stops at:
Door County Creamery in Sister Bay
Door County Bakery near Sister Bay
Scaturo’s Baking Company in Sturgeon Bay
MacReady Artisan Bread Company in Egg Harbor
Kick Ash Coffee in Ellison Bay
Blue Horse Beach Café in Fish Creek
Review current days and hours before visiting, especially later in the month.
For more sweet stops, see our guide to the best desserts in Door County.
Door County Lighthouses in October
October’s fall color creates a dramatic background for Door County’s lighthouses, but seasonal access becomes more complicated as the month progresses.
Cana Island Lighthouse
Cana Island Lighthouse near Baileys Harbor is one of Door County’s most iconic attractions.
Visitors cross a causeway to reach the island, sometimes using a tractor-drawn wagon when service is operating. Water levels, waves and weather can affect access.
The tower normally operates seasonally, so verify the final tour date and daily schedule before driving to the site.
Eagle Bluff Lighthouse
Eagle Bluff Lighthouse stands inside Peninsula State Park above Green Bay.
Tours generally continue into October, but the operating calendar is more limited than during summer. A state park vehicle pass is required to enter the park.
Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lights
The Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal includes the red North Pierhead Light and the taller canal lighthouse.
Visitors must stay within public areas and respect Coast Guard restrictions. Avoid walking onto the pier during high waves, rain, ice or strong wind.
Baileys Harbor Range Lights
The Baileys Harbor Range Lights are located at The Ridges Sanctuary. The paired structures helped ships navigate safely into the harbor.
Visit as part of a hike or guided program at The Ridges Sanctuary.
Fish Boils in October
Several traditional Door County fish boils continue into October, although schedules become less frequent as the season winds down.
A fish boil usually includes locally caught whitefish, potatoes and onions cooked outdoors over an open fire. The boilmaster creates a dramatic boilover immediately before the food is served.
White Gull Inn
White Gull Inn in Fish Creek offers one of Door County’s classic fish-boil experiences.
Its season commonly extends through October, but the number of weekly boil nights may change. Reservations are strongly recommended.
Pelletier’s
Pelletier’s Restaurant and Fish Boil operates in downtown Fish Creek and typically continues its fish boils into the fall.
Old Post Office Restaurant
The Old Post Office Restaurant in Ephraim offers a waterfront fish boil with views across Eagle Harbor.
Check each restaurant directly for current dates and seating times. Do not assume summer schedules remain in effect throughout October.
Use our Door County restaurant guide for additional dining ideas.
Halloween and Spooky Door County
Door County’s maritime history, old buildings, shipwreck stories and wooded landscapes make it a natural destination for a Halloween-season trip.
In addition to Jack O’Lantern Days, families may find:
Community trick-or-treating
Costume contests
Pumpkin displays
Haunted trolley tours
Ghost walks
Seasonal performances
Halloween programs at museums and nature centers
Door County Trolley commonly offers themed evening experiences during the fall. Some are designed for adults or include genuinely frightening content, so read age recommendations carefully before booking.
The Door County Historical Museum in Sturgeon Bay is another worthwhile October stop. Its exhibits provide context for the communities, industries and people behind many local stories.
Rainy-Day and Cold-Weather Activities
October weather can change quickly. A bright morning may turn into a windy, rainy afternoon, particularly near Lake Michigan.
Keep at least one indoor option available each day.
Door County Maritime Museum
The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay explores shipbuilding, navigation, lighthouses and Great Lakes history.
The Jim Kress Maritime Tower provides elevated views of Sturgeon Bay, the bridges and surrounding waterfront.
Hands On Art Studio
Hands On Art Studio near Fish Creek allows visitors to create pottery, mosaics, fused glass, paintings and other art projects.
It works especially well for school-age children, teens and adults who want a substantial activity rather than a quick museum visit.
Door County Historical Museum
The Door County Historical Museum in downtown Sturgeon Bay features regional history exhibits and a detailed wildlife diorama.
Door County Candy
Door County Candy in Sturgeon Bay makes an easy rainy-day stop for families exploring downtown.
Shopping and Galleries
Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, Sister Bay and Sturgeon Bay all offer clusters of shops and galleries. Hours become less predictable later in October, so check before making a special trip.
For additional options, see our Door County indoor activities guide.
Visiting Washington Island in October
A Washington Island trip is still possible in October, but it requires more advance planning than a summer visit.
The Washington Island Ferry operates year-round, but its schedule changes seasonally. Wind and weather may affect travel, and many island businesses reduce their hours or close after the main tourism season.
Potential stops include:
Schoolhouse Beach
Stavkirke
Mountain Park Lookout Tower
Jackson Harbor
Little Lake
Washington Island Farm Museum
Island cafés and shops that remain open
The island’s roads and wooded areas can be beautiful during fall color. However, do not arrive without checking ferry times, return departures and individual business hours.
See our Washington Island family guide before planning the day.
Where to Stay in October
Sister Bay
Sister Bay is the best base for families attending Fall Fest or looking for restaurants, shops and waterfront activity within walking distance.
Festival weekend lodging fills far in advance.
Fish Creek
Fish Creek offers excellent access to Peninsula State Park, restaurants, shopping, fish boils and Jack O’Lantern Days.
It is one of the most convenient bases for a first-time fall trip.
Egg Harbor
Egg Harbor works well for Pumpkin Patch Festival weekend and provides relatively easy access to Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek and Peninsula State Park.
Baileys Harbor
Baileys Harbor is a strong base for families prioritizing Cave Point, Whitefish Dunes, Cana Island Lighthouse and The Ridges Sanctuary.
Lake Michigan winds can make it feel colder than the bay side of the peninsula.
Sturgeon Bay
Sturgeon Bay offers the largest selection of year-round hotels, restaurants, stores and indoor attractions.
It is often the smartest choice for a late-October trip when businesses farther north begin reducing their schedules.
Ephraim
Ephraim delivers some of the peninsula’s best bay views and easy access to Peninsula State Park, Sister Bay and Fish Creek.
It is quieter at night than Sister Bay and especially scenic during fall color.
Start with our town-by-town Door County lodging guide.
A Three-Day October Door County Itinerary
Day One: Sturgeon Bay and the Lake Michigan Side
Drive north from Milwaukee and stop at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay.
Continue to Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park for shoreline views and a fall hike. End the day with dinner in Baileys Harbor.
During the Lighthouse Festival weekend, substitute a reserved lighthouse tour for part of the afternoon.
Day Two: Peninsula State Park and the Bay-Side Villages
Arrive at Peninsula State Park early. Visit Eagle Tower and choose a trail suited to your family’s ability.
Have lunch in Fish Creek, then continue through Ephraim to Sister Bay. Stop for orchard treats, walk along the waterfront and stay for sunset.
During Pumpkin Patch or Fall Fest, devote most of the afternoon to the festival rather than attempting several villages.
Day Three: Orchards and Northern Door County
Begin at Seaquist Orchards or Lautenbach’s Orchard Country.
Continue north through Ellison Bay and Gills Rock. Drive the winding section of Highway 42, then choose between Newport State Park and a Washington Island ferry trip.
Return south before dark, watching carefully for deer along wooded roads.
What to Pack for Door County in October
October requires true cold-weather flexibility.
Bring:
Warm base layers
Sweatshirts or fleece
A wind-resistant coat
Rain gear
Winter hats and gloves
Sturdy hiking shoes
Extra socks
Sunscreen and sunglasses
Reusable water bottles
Blankets for sunsets or stargazing
Flashlights or headlamps
A portable phone charger
A small first-aid kit
An umbrella
A change of clothes for children
Temperatures can differ noticeably between Sturgeon Bay, northern Door County and the Lake Michigan shoreline. A calm 55-degree afternoon in Egg Harbor may feel much colder at Cave Point when the wind is blowing off the lake.
October Planning Tips
Reserve early for festival weekends. Pumpkin Patch and Fall Fest bring some of October’s largest crowds.
Expect traffic. Highway 42 through Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay can move slowly during peak weekends.
Visit popular parks early. Peninsula State Park parking areas may fill by late morning.
Check seasonal hours every day. A restaurant that is open Thursday through Sunday may be closed when you return on Monday.
Do not rely on summer schedules. Tours, ferries, fish boils and rentals may operate less frequently.
Download maps. Cell coverage can be inconsistent in northern Door County and within some parks.
Watch for deer. Wildlife is particularly active around dawn and dusk.
Keep your itinerary flexible. Rain, wind and Lake Michigan conditions may change plans quickly.
Pack more warmth than you think you need. October evenings near the water can feel much colder than the forecast suggests.
Is October a Good Time to Visit Door County?
October is one of the best times to visit Door County—provided you plan for crowds, cool weather and changing seasonal hours.
Come during the first half of the month for the best chance of strong fall color, active orchards and broad attraction availability. Visit during Pumpkin Patch or Fall Fest for the full festival experience. Choose late October for Halloween events, quieter roads and a more peaceful version of the peninsula.
A weekend is enough for a scenic drive, one major park, an orchard and a festival. Three or four days give you room to explore both sides of the peninsula without turning the trip into a race.
Door County in October is not simply summer with colder weather. It feels like a different destination entirely—more colorful, more atmospheric and, on the right crisp fall morning, almost impossibly beautiful.

September occupies the sweet spot between Door County’s summer rush and its busiest fall-color weekends.
