Eco Plastic Mosaics Workshop: Transforming Trash into Treasure
Get ready for an evening where creativity meets environmental stewardship. The Eco Plastic Mosaics Workshop promises to spark both imagination and community action on Thursday, June 5, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Shorewood Village Center.
This engaging workshop kicks off with a brief lecture on reducing plastic use. Afterward, families of all ages will have the chance to roll up their sleeves and transform plastic debris and natural items gathered from Atwater Beach into stunning mosaics. Imagine turning what was once discarded into beautiful, one-of-a-kind artwork.
You'll also learn how to craft durable rope from plastic bags—a skill that not only highlights the potential of reusable materials but also provides a hands-on lesson in sustainable practices. This dual approach of art and practical recycling techniques makes the event perfect for inquisitive minds and eco-conscious families alike.
This workshop is an integral part of Shorewood’s innovative "Catch the Wave Shorewood – Reduce Single-Use Plastic" project. This initiative is all about uniting the community in the fight against plastic waste while fostering a spirit of creativity and resourcefulness.
The project is powered by the work of the Shorewood Waters Project and managed by the passionate Kae DonLevy. Since 2011, Kae has been on a mission to connect residents and students to our local waterways, from the pristine stretches of Great Lake Michigan to the flowing waters of the Milwaukee River. Her work has inspired over a decade of engaging workshops and educational events aimed at nurturing a deeper appreciation for our water-rich region.
Adding an extra splash of inspiration to the event is Shorewood resident Anna Coffaro. A graduate of Shorewood High School and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Anna brings a unique blend of artistic expertise and sustainable mindset. With studies in sustainability from both Copenhagen and Hawaii, she transforms marine debris into evocative art. Her work not only raises awareness about the detrimental impact of waste on aquatic life but also empowers communities to take tangible action against plastic pollution.
Whether you’re a long-time environmental advocate, an art lover, or a family looking for a unique way to spend a Thursday evening, this workshop offers something for everyone. It’s more than just a craft session—it’s a chance to learn, connect, and contribute to a movement towards a cleaner, greener shoreline. Imagine the joy of creating art alongside your family while taking a stand for the environment, turning everyday trash into a beautiful testament to creativity and conservation.
So mark your calendars for June 5 and head over to Shorewood Village Center. Bring your curiosity, get your hands messy with mosaics, and learn a new skill in turning plastic bags into rope. Let’s come together to celebrate art, educate ourselves, and champion a future with less plastic waste.
