Step Back in Time at the Kilbourntown House

Tucked away in the scenic Estabrook Park in Shorewood, the Kilbourntown House is a hidden historical gem that offers visitors a rare glimpse into Milwaukee’s early days. This beautifully preserved structure, built around 1844 by pioneer carpenter and builder Benjamin Church, is one of the city’s oldest surviving homes—and a striking example of Greek Revival architecture.

A House with a Pioneer Past

Originally located in Milwaukee’s Kilbourntown settlement—an early rival of Juneautown before the two merged to form Milwaukee—the house reflects the ambitions of early settlers with its fluted Doric columns, clean architectural lines, and durable construction. Church crafted the home using hand-hewn oak and elm timbers, with exterior walls lined in brick for added insulation and strength.

In 1938, to preserve its historical significance, the Kilbourntown House was relocated from its original site near Fourth and Court Streets to its current location in Estabrook Park. Thanks to the efforts of the Milwaukee County Historical Society, the Milwaukee County Park Commission, and the Colonial Dames of Wisconsin, the house was restored and reopened to the public on September 4, 1939.

Today, the Kilbourntown House operates as a historic house museum under the care of the Milwaukee County Historical Society. While it’s not open daily, guided tours are often available seasonally or during special events. The interior is furnished with authentic items used prior to 1865, offering a fully immersive experience into 19th-century domestic life.
