Coyote Management in Milwaukee’s North Shore: What Families Should Know
Living in Milwaukee’s North Shore means sharing our neighborhoods with nature — towering trees, beautiful trails, and yes, sometimes even wildlife like coyotes. While coyotes are a natural part of our ecosystem and usually keep to themselves, it's important for families to know best practices for keeping pets, children, and our communities safe when sightings occur.
Understanding Coyote Behavior
Coyotes are typically shy and avoid human contact. Most of the time, when you spot a coyote, it’s simply passing through your yard or a nearby park. However, coyotes can occasionally linger in one area, especially if they find easy food sources or are protecting a den. Rarely, they may exhibit aggressive behavior — particularly toward small pets.
Best Practices for Families and Homeowners
Do not feed coyotes (or leave pet food outdoors). Feeding wildlife encourages them to lose their natural fear of humans.
Secure garbage bins and compost piles with tight-fitting lids.
Supervise pets when outdoors, especially at dawn, dusk, and nighttime when coyotes are most active.
Remove attractants like bird seed under feeders, fallen fruit from trees, and outdoor water bowls.
Use hazing techniques if you encounter a coyote nearby. Make loud noises, wave your arms, or throw small objects toward (but not at) the coyote to encourage it to move on.
When Should You Report a Coyote Sighting?
If the coyote is not displaying aggressive behavior, there is no need to report it to the Village or local authorities. Instead, residents are encouraged to log sightings online through the Milwaukee County Coyote Watch project at tinyurl.com/CoyoteWatch.
If a coyote is displaying aggressive behavior — such as growling, baring teeth, lunging, or stalking people or pets — you should immediately contact your local police department. Officers will assess the situation and take appropriate action based on the circumstances.
For broader wildlife concerns, families can also contact the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for advice and resources.
