Civil War Living History to Old World Wisconsin This July
Families can step into Wisconsin’s Civil War history this summer during For Liberty & Union: A Civil War Living History Experience at Old World Wisconsin in Eagle.
Held Saturday and Sunday, July 18–19, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the special event explores the role Wisconsin communities played during the American Civil War, both on the battlefield and at home. Presented in partnership with the Badger Light Infantry, the 2026 program will focus on the 23rd Wisconsin Regiment, a Civil War regiment made up of soldiers from multiple immigrant groups across southern Wisconsin.
Unlike some Civil War programs, this experience will not include live battle reenactments out of respect for service members who have experienced active combat. Demonstrations featuring blank ammunition may be part of the day’s programming.
What to Expect
Admission includes both the For Liberty & Union living history program and general admission to Old World Wisconsin, giving visitors access to the site’s historic buildings, farms, workshops and immersive exhibits.
Guests can expect historical interpretation centered on the 23rd Wisconsin Regiment and the broader story of how Wisconsin families, immigrants and communities experienced the Civil War era.
It’s also a chance to explore one of the state’s most unique history destinations. Old World Wisconsin features more than 60 restored historic homes, farms, stores and workshops, representing Wisconsin life from the 1840s through the 1940s. The site includes stories connected to African American, Danish, Finnish, Hessian, Irish, Norwegian, Polish, Pomeranian, Yankee and other communities who helped shape early Wisconsin.

Know Before You Go
Old World Wisconsin is a large outdoor historic site located within the Kettle Moraine State Forest, so plan for a day with plenty of walking. The grounds include gravel roads, hills and uneven terrain, and visitors are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. The site remains open rain or shine, though programs may change depending on weather or availability.
Motorized trams make scheduled stops around the site throughout the day and are included with admission. Free parking is available on site, including space for large vehicles, RVs and buses. Modern restrooms, changing rooms and water fountains are also available.
Service animals are welcome, but pets are not allowed. Because many of the buildings are historic, not all areas are ADA accessible. Guests using wheelchairs and electric scooters are eligible for complimentary admission, and visitors with mobility questions can contact Old World Wisconsin directly at 262-594-6301 or oww@wisconsinhistory.org.
For ticket questions, contact the box office at 608-264-4848 or boxoffice@wisconsinhistory.org.
