Harbor Fest 2026: Science in Action at the Lakefront

The Harbor District is a unique area of Milwaukee, with everything from kayaking to fishing to live music to salvage yards.

The idea is simple and perfect for curious kids: explore the science, creatures, culture and community connected to Milwaukee’s Inner Harbor and the waters that connect us all.

The 2026 theme, What Lies Beneath, leans into the hidden world under the water: fish, science, restoration work, freshwater research, invasive species, water chemistry, climate questions and the people working to protect the Great Lakes.

For North Shore families, it is also a great excuse to get kids closer to the harbor, see a different side of Milwaukee and make a free afternoon feel like a mini field trip.

Must-Do Activities

Sturgeon Blessing & Release Experience

release a baby sturgeon

This is Harbor Fest's most unique offering and an absolute must for families passionate about conservation. Your children will have the rare opportunity to release a baby sturgeon directly into Milwaukee's Inner Harbor, supporting the restoration of this native species.

Family Tip: Consider sponsoring a sturgeon for $15. Your family receives a keepsake certificate and can track your fish's growth over time—creating a lasting connection to Milwaukee's waterways that extends far beyond the festival.

UWM School of Freshwater Sciences Tour

Perfect for curious kids and teens interested in STEM fields. The School of Freshwater Sciences’ behind-the-scenes tours showcases cutting-edge research in fish ecology, water chemistry, and climate change. Scientists and students lead interactive exhibits that make complex environmental science accessible and engaging for all ages.

Why North Shore families love this: The tour connects Great Lakes science to issues your family might discuss at home, from water quality to invasive species management.

Getting to Harbor Fest

Harbor Fest takes place at Harbor View Plaza, 600 E. Greenfield Avenue, Milwaukee.

By water taxi: The most festive way to arrive may be by water. Harbor Fest plans to offer a free water taxi, with pick-up locations still to be announced.

By car: Families can drive to Harbor View Plaza. A parking map is expected closer to the event, so check the official Harbor Fest page before you go.

Because the event is free and runs only four hours, it is worth arriving early if your family wants to fit in boat rides, food trucks, the UWM open house and Sturgeon Fest activities.

Educational Value for Families

To share the history and unique background of the area, Harbor District CEO Tia Torhorst joined the Joshing Around podcast to dive into the transformation of the city’s Harbor District. Tia shares how the District is revitalizing Milwaukee’s shoreline, creating green spaces, enhancing public access and fostering a hub for culture and connection.

Harbor Fest aligns perfectly with North Shore values around environmental stewardship and hands-on learning. Your children will:

  • Learn about Great Lakes conservation through real scientific research

  • Participate in meaningful environmental action through sturgeon release

  • Gain appreciation for Milwaukee's industrial heritage and environmental revival

  • Experience STEAM learning in an outdoor, festival setting
