Milwaukee’s lakefront will transform into one big German celebration when German Fest Milwaukee returns Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26, 2026.

The 44th German Fest combines live music, traditional dance, German food, imported beer, cultural exhibits and family activities at Henry Maier Festival Park. This year’s entertainment includes the return of internationally known folk-pop group voXXclub, Milwaukee Oktoberfest favorites, the STIHL Timbersports U.S. Championships and the always-popular Dachshund Derby.

German Fest is one of the signature events in our Milwaukee summer festival guide, but the sheer amount of simultaneous entertainment can make planning tricky. Here are the performers and special events families should know about in 2026.

The biggest name: voXXclub returns to Milwaukee

German folk-pop group voXXclub is the marquee attraction for 2026.

The five-member group is best known for combining Alpine folk traditions with pop, rock, hip-hop influences, vocal harmonies and energetic choreography. Its breakthrough song, “Rock Mi,” helped propel the group from a Munich apartment jam session to festival stages and television appearances around the world.

voXXclub’s performances are much more contemporary than the polka-band experience some visitors may expect from German Fest. The group’s shows are fast-moving, theatrical and likely to appeal to teenagers and younger adults as well as longtime festivalgoers.

According to German Fest, voXXclub will perform on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25. Because the group is the weekend’s primary headliner, arrive early if you want a good viewing spot.

German Fest Milwaukee’s 2026 bands

The official German Fest band roster brings together international performers and Wisconsin groups that have helped keep German-American musical traditions alive.

Die Freistadt Alte Kameraden Band

One of the most historically significant groups on the schedule, Die Freistadt Alte Kameraden Band traces its roots to 1942, when young musicians from the German and Pomeranian community in Freistadt formed what was originally called the Victory Band.

The ensemble performs German and Austrian brass arrangements alongside American patriotic selections. It has appeared at every Milwaukee German Fest since the festival began in 1981, making it an essential stop for families interested in the local history behind the celebration.

Alpine Blast

Milwaukee-based Alpine Blast mixes German Schlager, Oberkrainer polkas and Alpine music with American rock-and-roll.

The band describes itself as the result of “an Austrian, a Slovenian and a Swiss” coming together to make music. Its performances are lively, accessible and typically filled with familiar songs, dancing and audience participation.

If members of your family are uncertain whether they enjoy traditional German music, Alpine Blast is a good entry point.

Die Heimatklänge

Based in Philadelphia, Die Heimatklänge combines traditional German music with modern arrangements, American country, rock-and-roll and contemporary festival favorites from Germany and Austria.

The group was founded in 1955 and represents a second generation of musicians carrying on its German-American performance tradition.

The Biermen

The Biermen formed in 2021 and perform a party-friendly combination of German music, classic rock, country and yodeling.

Their broader playlist makes the group another good option for mixed-age families or visitors who want the atmosphere of a German beer hall without hearing only traditional selections.

Tom Schneider and the 2/5th’s Party Band

Rooted in Wisconsin polka, Tom Schneider and the 2/5th’s Party Band includes former members of the Jerry Schneider Band.

The group performs German and Wisconsin polka favorites while expanding its playlist with swing and classic country songs associated with artists such as Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams.

Tom Schneider and the 2/5th’s are scheduled to perform Friday afternoon from 3–5:30 p.m. at the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard, making them one of the first acts families can catch after the gates open.

Dorf Kapelle

Dorf Kapelle returns with traditional German-American festival music throughout the weekend. Look for the band’s performances on the official schedule when planning your day.

JUHE aus Tirol

Austrian group JUHE aus Tirol is also expected back in Milwaukee for 2026. The group brings an authentic Tyrolean sound to the grounds and is one of the weekend’s notable international performers.

STIHL Timbersports comes to German Fest

One of the biggest additions to the festival experience is the return of STIHL Timbersports.

Professional athletes will compete in traditional lumberjack disciplines requiring strength, speed and precision. These events offer a dramatic change of pace from the musical stages and should be especially entertaining for school-age children and teenagers.

The major competitions announced for 2026 are:

• Friday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m.: U.S. Hot Saw Showdown

• Saturday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m.: U.S. Women’s Championship

• Sunday, July 26 at 2 p.m.: U.S. Men’s Championship

The hot saw is particularly impressive—and loud. Competitors race to cut precise wooden discs using extremely powerful modified chainsaws. Families with young children or anyone sensitive to loud noises may want to bring hearing protection.

“Lumberjacks in Love”

German Fest will also feature “Lumberjacks in Love,” a musical comedy created by Wisconsin’s Northern Sky Theater.

Set in a logging camp where women have been prohibited for 200 miles, the show combines comedy, romance and Wisconsin-flavored musical theater. It provides a more relaxed counterpart to the competitive Timbersports events.

Traditional German dance performances

Music is only part of the cultural entertainment. German Fest hosts adult and youth dance groups representing different regions and traditions.

Past and returning participating organizations include Milwaukee-area German clubs and visiting ensembles performing in traditional clothing. Families may see Schuhplattler-style dancing, children’s performances, folk dances and demonstrations highlighting the distinctive dress and customs of different German-speaking regions.

Karneval celebrations

German Fest’s 2026 programming also celebrates Karneval, the German pre-Lenten tradition known for elaborate costumes, music, parades, dancing and playful public ceremonies.

Programming is expected to include the crowning of the German Fest Prinzenpaar—the ceremonial prince and princess—along with appearances by Karneval organizations and performers.

Musikgarten for younger children

Families with toddlers and preschoolers should look for Musikgarten, an interactive program that introduces children to rhythm, movement and music.

The Original Glockenspiel

The Original Glockenspiel remains one of German Fest’s most distinctive attractions.

At scheduled times, costumed performers emerge from the life-sized structure and recreate the movement and music of a traditional European glockenspiel. Performances are relatively brief and easy to add between meals, concerts or children’s activities.

Because the glockenspiel operates several times during the weekend, families generally do not need to organize their entire visit around one appearance. Consult the official schedule after arriving for that day’s times.

Sunday’s 19th Annual Dachshund Derby

The German Fest Dachshund Derby returns Sunday, July 26, for its 19th year.

German Fest expects to welcome as many as 100 dachshunds for races, awards, a costume contest and the traditional Blessing of the Doxies. It is one of the most entertaining family events of the weekend—even when the dogs do not run in the intended direction.

Dachshund racing divisions

Dogs compete in categories based primarily on age:

• Braunschweigers: Special-needs and older dogs

• Knockwursts: Ages 8 and older

• Schnitzels: Ages 5–8

• Bratwursts: Ages 3–5

• Frankfurters: Ages 1–3

• Lil’ Smokies: Puppies up to age 1

Registration costs $18 and includes one German Fest admission ticket.

Only registered dachshunds may enter the festival grounds. Other pets are prohibited under Henry Maier Festival Park regulations. Free doggy daycare is available after a participating dog races, but owners must bring a labeled crate or kennel, water dish, leash and waste bags.

What to eat at German Fest

Entertainment may be the focus of this guide, but food is a major part of the experience.

Visitors can expect German and German-American favorites such as bratwurst, schnitzel, potato pancakes, pretzels, sausages, sauerkraut, strudel and other pastries. German and Wisconsin beers are served throughout the grounds, along with nonalcoholic drinks and family-friendly options.

Which day is best for families?

Friday is best for value and headline music. Gates open at 3 p.m., and voXXclub is scheduled to perform that evening. Friday generally works well for families with older children or teenagers who want contemporary music and can stay later.

Saturday offers the fullest festival experience. With 12 hours of programming, Saturday gives families the greatest selection of bands, dance performances, cultural activities and the STIHL Timbersports U.S. Women’s Championship. It will probably also draw the largest crowd.

Sunday is the best choice for younger children and dog lovers. The shorter day has a more relaxed pace, with the Dachshund Derby beginning shortly after the gates open and the STIHL Timbersports U.S. Men’s Championship at 2 p.m.

Tips for planning your German Fest visit

Download or bookmark the official entertainment schedule shortly before the festival. German Fest uses several stages, and many performances overlap.

Choose two or three must-see events rather than trying to cover everything. Allow extra time for food lines, bathroom stops and walking between stages.

For the Dachshund Derby, arrive before the 1:05 p.m. blessing. The races are popular, and viewing areas can fill quickly.

Bring hearing protection if your children are sensitive to loud music, fireworks or chainsaws. This will be especially useful near the STIHL Timbersports competition.

Finally, remember that the grounds sit directly along Lake Michigan. Even after a hot afternoon, evenings near the lake can become breezy or cooler than inland neighborhoods.
