The 50 Best Sandwiches in Greater Milwaukee

classic Meatball Sandwich

The classic Meatball Sandwich at Glorioso’s

We pulled together more than 50 of the best places to grab a sandwich across Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington, Racine, and Kenosha counties, organized by sandwich style so you can find your fix fast.

Most are casual, family-friendly, and easy on the wallet; the few splurges are flagged. A note before you go: a few longtime favorites — Beans & Barley, Bavette La Boucherie, Lazy Susan, Pizza Man Wauwatosa, and Riverside Brewery in West Bend — have closed since 2023, so we've left them off the list and pointed you to spots still serving in 2026.

Glorioso's stuffs Italian beef onto Peter Sciortino hard rolls on Brady Street, Tenuta's has been slicing prosciutto thin enough to read through since 1950 in Kenosha, Jake's Deli has been hand-cutting corned beef on North Avenue since 1955, and a new generation of shops — Hen's Deli, Allie Boy's Bagelry, Riley's Sandwich Co. — is rewriting what a Milwaukee sandwich can be.

Classic Italian Subs and Italian Beef

Glorioso's Italian Market — Lower East Side, Milwaukee. The 1011 E. Brady St. landmark, family-owned since 1946, is the city's reigning Italian beef destination — savory, salty, dripping with au jus and topped with hot giardiniera on a Peter Sciortino hard roll. The muffuletta and meatball sub on house marinara are equally beloved, and Glorioso's has won "Milwaukee's Best Deli" from OnMilwaukee.com every year since 2009. Sandwiches run roughly $9–$14. The market reopened in 2025 after a fire and remains a top family stop for groceries, gelato, and lunch.

G. Groppi Food Market — Bay View, Milwaukee. This Italian corner market at 1441 E. Russell Ave. has anchored Bay View since 1913 and is now run by Ryan and Casey Foltz, who took over in January 2024. The Cuban-style panini and breakfast sandwiches from the deli case get the most love, alongside hot Italian beef from the daily hot bar. Tight quarters, a tiny bar in back, and a "1960s grocery store" feel make it a charming pit stop for families.

Tenuta's Delicatessen — Kenosha. "A Kenosha tradition since 1950," Tenuta's at 3203 52nd St. is the southernmost crown jewel of the metro. The signature Muffo-Lotta — a sliced muffuletta sold by the slab — is the move, with the roast beef and au jus a close second. Italian sausage, meatball bombers, and house-cut prosciutto round out an enormous deli case. The store celebrated its 75th anniversary on April 1, 2025. Sandwiches typically $7–$13. Family-friendly with sidewalk hot-dog grilling in summer.

Wells Brothers Italian Restaurant — Racine. Open at 2148 Mead St. since 1921 and now run by the fourth generation of the Wells family, this old-school Italian spot is best known for cracker-thin pizza but also slings a stout sandwich menu: the Goomba (a multi-pound Italian combo), the Italian Bomber (meatball or sausage with mozzarella), the Sicilian Steak Bomber, and a respected Italian beef and hot beef. Sandwiches $9–$15. Comfortable, family-friendly retro dining room.

The Original Suburpia — South Milwaukee and Wauwatosa. Founded in 1967 (and famously soundtracked by John Belushi radio jingles in the 1970s), Suburpia is the throwback Milwaukee submarine experience: sesame-seeded fresh bread baked exclusively for them by Peter Sciortino's Bakery, served in a paper bag to catch the peppery oil. The Classic, Gold Coast, and Miles Standish are the cult favorites. Locations at 116 E. Layton Ave. and 11108 W. Bluemound Rd., Wauwatosa.

Cousins Subs — multiple locations. Founded in Milwaukee in 1972 by Jersey City cousins Bill Specht and Jim Sheppard at 60th and Silver Spring, Cousins is the homegrown chain Wisconsinites grew up on. The original-recipe Italian Special is the move, but the chicken cheddar bacon sub and a deli-fresh Provolone Veggie are family lunchbox staples. As of April 2026, there are 94 Cousins Subs locations in the United States, with 92 of them in Wisconsin (97% of all locations) and two in Indiana. Subs $8–$12, kids' meals available.

The Chocolate Factory — Brookfield, Cedarburg, Delafield, Hartland, Oak Creek, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, West Bend. Started as an ice cream shop in 1972, this Wisconsin-only mini-chain is famous for warm-from-the-oven sub rolls baked all day, a signature shake of oregano, and a creamy "special mayonnaise" that distinguishes the Phoenix and the ham-and-cheese. Sandwiches $7–$11. Pair with their Wisconsin-made ice cream — kids will not let you skip it.

Falbo Bros. Pizza — Shorewood. The Wisconsin pizzeria chain (founded 1992 in Madison) brought its Chicago-style Italian beef and giant Italian subs to Shorewood at 4218 N. Oakland Ave. The Falbo Italian Beef on French bread with au jus, hot giardiniera, and mozzarella is the highlight, alongside the meatball sub and a chicken parm grinder. Sandwiches $8–$13.

Cuban Sandwiches

Cubanitas — Downtown Milwaukee. The city's original Cuban restaurant celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024 and remains the gold-standard Cuban at 728 N. Milwaukee St. The classic Cuban — roasted pork, Virginia ham, Swiss, pickles, and mustard aioli on bread flown in from out east — is, per the menu, "Change it and it's not a Cuban sandwich." The bistec sandwich (sirloin with grilled onions and fries inside) and the empanadas are kid-pleasers. Sandwiches $13–$17. Bright, family-friendly dining room.

Camino — Walker's Point, Milwaukee. Camino's chef-owner has earned wide praise for inventive vegetarian sandwiches like the beet Reuben and Brussels sprout grinder, and the original 2015 menu featured a signature Cuban sandwich, house-cut fries, and salads. The 434 S. 2nd St. corner-bar concept is a Walker's Point go-to. Sandwiches $13–$17.

Banh Mi and Vietnamese

Xankia — Downtown Milwaukee. At 222 W. Wells St., Xankia (pronounced "sun-kee-aa") has been serving downtown's only Vietnamese banh mi shop since 2010. Eight varieties — pork, steak, meatball, tofu, sardine, rice noodle, and house special with pâté — on toasted baguette with house sriracha mayo, pickled carrot, daikon, and cilantro. Banh mi $6.75–$9; pho also available. Family-friendly counter service.

Saigon Baguette — East Side. A newer Vietnamese spot at 2338 N. Farwell Ave. with crispy banh mi (try the grilled pork or lemongrass chicken), pho, Vietnamese coffee, and boba in a vibrant, modern space. Sandwiches $8–$12.

Pho Cali, Pho Saigon, Pho Spot, BaoBao Cuisine, Mekong Café, Huế. Yelp's top-rated banh mi spots in Milwaukee in 2026, scattered from the South Side to the East Side — pho-focused restaurants with strong banh mi menus, generally $7–$11.

Deli Sandwiches, Reubens, and Corned Beef

Jake's Delicatessen — North Avenue, Milwaukee. Founded in 1955 (the building has been a deli since the early 1900s), Jake's at 1634 W. North Ave. is the legendary hand-cut corned beef and pastrami deli of Milwaukee. Corned beef sandwich $11, Reuben $13, pastrami $16; ask for "lean" cut for an extra-tender experience. Order a Dr. Brown's soda and don't expect a fancy room — that's the point.

Hen's Deli — Walker's Point, Milwaukee. Vivian Sotolongo and Lucas McDonald's family-run deli at 209 W. Florida St. opened in 2022 in the former Soup Brothers space and immediately became a foodie favorite. House-made bagels, the Italian sub (consistently called Milwaukee's best by readers), the roast beef sub, the Hadassah (rosemary bagel with lox spread), pork pastrami on brioche, and a rotating featured torta. Open Tuesday–Saturday only; expect to grab and go. Sandwiches $11–$16. Selected to Shepherd Express's 2025 Best of Milwaukee finalists for bagels.

Allie Boy's Bagelry & Luncheonette — Walker's Point and East Side. Ben Nerenhausen and Staci's modern Midwestern bagel shop has two locations (135 E. National Ave. and 2100 N. Farwell Ave.). The Reubeneski on a pumpernickel bagel, the Classic with house-cured lox, the Veg Head (avocado, lemon vinaigrette, pesto schmear), and rotating lobster-roll specials are bucket-list sandwiches. Open Thursday–Sunday only — line up early on weekends.

Bunzel's Old-Fashioned Meat Market — Northwest Side, Milwaukee. A four-generation, 80-year-old butcher shop and full-service deli at 9015 W. Burleigh St. Daily deli changes by the day: hot corned beef, homemade Reubens, sliced honey-mustard cheddar brats, and chicken meatloaf on Tuesdays/Thursdays; Friday brings a fried cod fish sandwich. Sandwiches $7–$12. Closed Sunday.

Milwaukee Waterfront Deli — Downtown. A workday lunch staple known for hot pastrami ($13.95), corned beef ($10.95), and Reubens ($11.95) made with Boar's Head meats. Bright, mural-decorated dining room — pleasant for kids.

Cheesesteaks

Chubby's Cheesesteaks — East Side, Bayshore (Glendale), and West Milwaukee. Founded in 2007, Milwaukee's authentic Philly cheesesteak destination at 2232 N. Oakland Ave. (plus 430 W. Silver Spring Dr. and 2147 Miller Park Way) is the late-night go-to. Order the classic ribeye cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz, with chicken or ground beef variations, and don't skip the Whiz Fries. Open until 2 or 3 a.m. on weekends. Sandwiches $9–$14.

Po' Boys and New Orleans-Style

Maxie's — West Side, Milwaukee. Voted Shepherd Express's 2025 Best Louisiana/Southern Restaurant, Maxie's at 6732 W. Fairview Ave. serves the city's most authentic po' boy program. The Catfish Po' Boy ($13.95, blackened or fried with tartar and Cajun fries) is the order, with shrimp and oyster variations on the menu. Family-friendly, with a full Southern menu of jambalaya and shrimp and grits.

Crawdaddy's on Greenfield — West Allis. At 9427 W. Greenfield Ave., this neighborhood Cajun spot serves a po' boy with "your choice of either Louisiana Catfish or Wild Gulf Shrimp, served blackened or fried with lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayo between Leidenheimer French bread" — proper Crescent City build. Their five-foot Cajun Po' Boy challenge is a local legend.

The Original Crawdaddy's Roadhouse — West Allis. Separate ownership from the Greenfield location, this newer Cajun-influenced restaurant at 9638 W. National Ave. serves N'awlins po' boys with fried shrimp, crawfish tails, catfish, or oysters around $12.

Fried Chicken Sandwiches

Crafty Cow — Bay View, Oconomowoc, Mequon. The award-winning burger shop at 2675 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. shares a kitchen with sister concept Hot Head Fried Chicken and its signature Hot Boy sandwich (broccoli slaw and chipotle aioli on a cornbread bun, around $13.50). Open daily with a kids' menu and weekend brunch. Family-friendly multi-location chain.

Dave's Hot Chicken — Downtown, Menomonee Falls, Kenosha. The Nashville-hot specialist at 544 E. Ogden Ave. serves seven heat levels of hand-breaded chicken sliders on potato buns with kale slaw, pickles, and Dave's Sauce. Kids' menu; sandwiches around $9–$11.

Riley's Sandwich Co. & Social House — Third Ward and Bay View. Sous-vide chicken breast sandwiches in eight variations — chicken parmesan, jerk chicken, "wannabe banh mi," BBQ, taco dip, Nashville hot, and more — alongside steak and veggie options. The Third Ward Social House at 411 E. Menomonee St. is dog-friendly with 24 craft drafts, and June 2025 added Riley's Bar + Burger in Bay View. Sandwiches $11–$15.

Hot Beef and French Dip

Iron Grate BBQ Co. Hard Roll — Bay View/South Side. Aaron Patin's Hard Roll Sandwich ($8) at 4125 S. Howell Ave. — chopped brisket, pulled pork, BBQ chicken, hot link, or hot smoked ham on a Canfora Bakery hard roll with optional pickles and melted cheese — is the closest thing the city has to a great hot beef sandwich, with vinegar-based sauce served on the side.

Wells Brothers Hot Beef — Racine. The hot beef sandwich and Italian beef at this 1921 institution come with grilled peppers, onions, and mozzarella on French bread, served with soup or fries.

Real Chili — Downtown and East Side. Not strictly a sandwich shop, but Milwaukee's century-old chili parlor at 419 E. Wells St. and 1625 E. Wells St. is a family rite of passage, and the menu does include classic chili dogs and burgers that read sandwich-adjacent.

Bratwurst Sandwiches and Sausages

The Vanguard — Bay View, Milwaukee. At 2659 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., chef Patrick's house-made sausages are the city's most creative beer-and-brat tradition. Order the Milwaukee Style (cheese curds, cheddar, Cheez Whiz on any sausage), the Thai Breaker (lemongrass-ginger pork with peanut sauce, banh mi-style), the Bunkhouse (bacon-wrapped cheddarwurst), or the Schnitzelwurst (pretzel-crumb breaded and deep-fried). Vegan and chicken options available; kids welcome until evening. $8–$15.

Foltz Family Market — Milwaukee Public Market and Bay View. Ryan and Casey Foltz make their own sausages and serve them in The Wurst pub inside the Public Market at 400 N. Water St. Their chicken pesto panini is the deli-case favorite, but the brat sandwiches are the showpiece. Family-friendly food hall setting; sandwiches $10–$14.

Mars Cheese Castle — Kenosha. The 1947 Wisconsin road-trip icon at 2800 W. Frontage Rd. serves a Usinger bratwurst made to a Mars-exclusive recipe, plus a celebrated Reuben, the King's Ransom (a King of Clubs cheese spread sandwich), and Italian beef. Per Visit Kenosha: "The Food Network Sandwich King, Jeff Mauro has visited and declared that Mars Cheese Castle's grilled cheese is one of his top eight sandwiches in the country!" The kids will love seeing Isabel the talking cow. $9–$14.

Burgers (Iconic Only)

Sobelman's Pub & Grill — Menomonee Valley and Mequon. Dave and Melanie Sobelman's 1999 takeover of an original Schlitz tavern at 1900 W. St. Paul Ave. is the city's most famous burger experience. The Sobelman (American, Swiss, cheddar, bacon, fried onions, jalapeños) is the order; the Bloody Mary garnish program includes a full fried chicken on a skewer. Three locations; consistently family-friendly. Burgers $11–$16.

Stack'd Burger Bar — Fifth Ward. Build-your-own burgers with a long list of toppings, plus standout signatures like the Hangover Stack (egg, bacon, cheddar) and the Fresco. Vegetarian and gluten-free buns available. $13–$17.

Kewpee Lunch — Downtown Racine. A 1926 stainless-steel diner at 520 Wisconsin Ave. with hand-shaped burgers, homemade root beer, and malts. Voted Racine's Best Burger 10 years running by Journal Times readers. Per Milwaukee Record, "the most expensive menu item, the double cheeseburger, will set you back a whopping $3.55. Almost everything else lands between $1.75 and $2.50" — cheeseburgers are $1.75 — the prices alone make it worth the drive. Cash-friendly, no drive-through.

Fried Fish Sandwiches (Wisconsin Specialty)

St. Paul Fish Company — Milwaukee Public Market. Tim and Mary Beth Collins's Public Market stalwart at 400 N. Water St. (and a second Mequon location at the Cannery) serves the city's best Maine-style lobster roll and a serious cod fish sandwich on Schlitz beer batter daily. Lobster roll ~$22; fish fry sandwich ~$12. The outdoor Tiki bar makes it a fun family stop on weekends.

Uncle Wolfie's Downtown — Brewers Hill. Chef Kristen Schwab's celebrated tilapia sandwich gets the Milwaukee Magazine "Bourdain-approved" treatment: buttermilk-soaked overnight, breaded with Sze Chuan salt and pepper seasoning, on a fluffy roll. Pair with a mezcal cocktail or a kid-friendly milkshake.

Lakefront Brewery — Riverwest. Their Friday fish fry sandwich on rye is a Milwaukee tourist rite; the brewery is family-friendly with polka brunch on Sundays.

Specialty and Gourmet (Chef-Driven)

Riley's Sandwich Co. — Third Ward and Bay View. Sandwiches $11–$16.

Comet Cafe — East Side. Reopened by Honeypie's parent company Pie Inc. in 2022 after a pandemic closure, the iconic East Side spot at 1947 N. Farwell Ave. brought back the Buttafuoco (tomato, onion, mozzarella, giardiniera, provolone, olive oil on a broiled baguette) — Milwaukee Magazine's longtime favorite vegetarian sandwich.

Honeypie Café — Bay View. At 2569 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., the from-scratch Midwestern menu includes a flat iron steak sandwich with smoked blue cheese and roasted garlic aioli, an open-faced pork loin with fontina, BBQ pulled pork on brioche, and a vegetarian "Veggie Pesto" on ciabatta. Kid-friendly; pies are the dessert move. Sandwiches $13–$17.

Family-friendly grocery and café experience. Sandwiches $8–$12.

The Vanguard's vegan brat — Bay View. House-made seitan in three styles (brat, chorizo, Italian) with all the same toppings as the meat versions, around $10.

Old-School Neighborhood and Hidden Gems

Three Brothers Restaurant — Bay View. The 2002 James Beard America's Classics Award-winning Serbian institution at 2414 S. St. Clair St., founded 1956, isn't a sandwich shop per se, but the chevapchichi (Serbian grilled-sausage sandwich) on house bread is one of the most distinctive sandwich experiences in the metro. Cash only; reservations recommended. $14–$22.

Frank's Diner — Kenosha. A 1926 dining-car landmark at 508 58th St., featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, with the Garbage Plate as the main draw — but the grilled-on-house-bread sandwiches (BLT, Spam-stacker, turkey club, juicy chicken breast) are a hit with kids who can pick at parents' plates.

Speed Queen Bar-B-Q — North Side. Milwaukee's classic pulled-pork-shoulder-on-white-bread joint at 1130 W. Walnut St., open since 1956. Famous Ashley Fries (smothered in pork, cheese, BBQ sauce) make this a destination. Sandwiches $9–$15. Closed Mondays.

Sandwiches $8–$12.

Smoke Shack — Third Ward. Joe and Angie Sorge's polished BBQ destination uses Berkshire pork (smoked 13 hours) and Black Angus brisket (10 hours). The pulled pork sandwich and brisket sandwich on toasted buns are the move; live blues on weekends. $13–$17. Family-friendly with a kids' menu.

Saz's State House — Menomonee Valley. A Milwaukee BBQ institution since 1976 at 5539 W. State St. — the BBQ pulled-pork sandwich with crispy onions and the BBQ rib tip platter are the orders. Family-friendly.

Family-Friendly Tips for Sandwich Adventures

Most spots on this list are casual, kid-friendly counter or quick-service operations with high chairs and children's menus. Three exceptions worth flagging: Three Brothers (cash only, intimate dining room — better for older kids); Tess on Bartlett (upscale fish-fry-and-sandwich destination — best for date night); and Sobelman's St. Paul Avenue (often has a wait — Mequon location is the family-friendly play). Public Market vendors (St. Paul Fish, Foltz Family Market, David Alan Alan's Smokehouse) are perfect when family members can't agree on a single cuisine. Kenosha and Racine's old-school spots (Tenuta's, Mars Cheese Castle, Frank's Diner, Wells Brothers, Kewpee Lunch) make great rainy-Saturday road-trip combinations from Milwaukee — most are within a 45-minute drive of downtown.

A Few Recently Closed Favorites to Note

To keep this guide accurate for 2026, we want to flag that some longtime favorites have closed: Beans & Barley (East Side, closed Jan. 31, 2026, after 52 years); Bavette La Boucherie (Third Ward, closed Jan. 17, 2026, after 13 years; chef-owner Karen Bell stepped back to focus on family); Lazy Susan (Bay View, closed April 2023; the space is now Heirloom MKE); AJ Bombers (downtown, closed); Pizza Man Wauwatosa (closed); Riverside Brewery & Restaurant (West Bend, closed Aug. 2025 after 20 years); and Engine Company No. 3 (Walker's Point, transitioned to private events only as of January 2024). The good news: the Milwaukee sandwich scene continues to evolve, with new openings like Hen's Deli, Allie Boy's, Riley's Sandwich Co., and Riley's Bar + Burger making 2026 a great year to discover your new sandwich obsession.
