Elkhorn Ribfest: Wisconsin's Largest BBQ Festival

Ribfest

If you're serious about BBQ — or just serious about having a great time — Elkhorn Ribfest needs to be on your calendar. Running five full days at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, this is the largest BBQ festival in the state, and it delivers on every level: championship-caliber smoked meats, live entertainment, a carnival for the kids, cold beer, and a vibe that's equal parts backyard cookout and all-out festival.

Whether you're coming from Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, or anywhere in between, it's an easy and absolutely worthwhile drive south.

What Is Elkhorn Ribfest?

Elkhorn Ribfest is a multi-day outdoor festival celebrating all things barbecue, held at the scenic Walworth County Fairgrounds. The event draws world-renowned professional BBQ champions competing for glory alongside backyard grillers throwing down in their own competition class. It's the kind of event where you can eat your weight in ribs, catch some seriously good live music, browse an artisan village, and let the kids loose at a carnival — all in one place.

The motto says it all: Good Food, Good Music, Good Times for the whole family.

When Does Elkhorn Ribfest Take Place?

July 15 - July 19, 2026. The festival runs five days with varying hours:

Wednesday gates open at 3:00 PM and close at 11:00 PM — a great option if you want to beat the weekend crowds and ease into the festivities after work.

Thursday through Saturday gates open at 11:00 AM and close at 11:00 PM — the heart of the festival with the longest hours for maximum rib consumption.

Sunday gates open at 11:00 AM and close at 9:00 PM — a perfect way to wrap up the weekend with a final plate (or two) before heading home.

What to Expect at Elkhorn Ribfest

World-Class BBQ Competition

The centerpiece of the whole event is the BBQ. Professional pitmasters from across the country compete at a championship level, meaning the racks of ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and smoked chicken you're eating are the real deal. There's also a backyard grillers competition for a more hometown feel. Come hungry. Leave happy.

Live Music and Entertainment

After you've had your fill of smoked meats, kick back with a cold beer and enjoy live music across multiple days of the festival. The entertainment lineup is built to keep you on the fairgrounds well into the evening.

Artisan Village

Beyond the food, the artisan village gives you a chance to browse handcrafted goods and unique vendors — a nice way to mix up the experience and find something to bring home other than a barbecue sauce stain on your shirt.

Carnival for the Kids

Elkhorn Ribfest is genuinely family-friendly. A full carnival on-site keeps kids entertained while the adults focus on the important business of sampling as many BBQ vendors as humanly possible.

Cold Drinks

Beer and wine are available throughout the festival. New this year: beer and wine purchases are card only, so plan accordingly. Food and shopping vendors will accept cash or cards at each business's discretion — bring both just to be safe.

Good to Know Before You Go

Lawn chairs are welcome — bring one and settle in for the afternoon. Dogs are not permitted at the festival, so leave your pups at home. Parking and traffic can pick up on peak weekend days, so arriving early is always a smart move.

Elkhorn is located about 45 miles southwest of Milwaukee — roughly an hour's drive depending on traffic. It's a straight shot down I-94 toward the Illinois border, making it an easy day trip or even a weekend getaway if you want to explore Lake Geneva, which is just a few miles away.

Plan Your Visit

Elkhorn Ribfest takes place at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Gates open Wednesday at 3 PM, and Thursday through Saturday at 11 AM, with Sunday wrapping up at 9 PM.

Pro tip: Bring your credit card for drinks and a mix of cash and card for food and shopping vendors. Lawn chairs in, dogs out. And definitely come hungry.
