Wisconsin First Day Hikes 2026: Complete Guide to All Locations

First day hike

Ring in 2026 with a refreshing outdoor adventure at one of Wisconsin's 25 state parks hosting First Day Hikes on January 1st. This comprehensive guide covers every participating location, organized by region, so you can choose the perfect winter hike for your family based on proximity, difficulty, and special features. Whether you're seeking dramatic waterfalls in the north, iconic bluffs near Madison, or urban nature trails in Milwaukee, Wisconsin's First Day Hike program offers something for everyone—and most events include warming fires, hot cocoa, and guided naturalist-led experiences.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources partners with the National Association of State Park Directors for this nationwide initiative encouraging outdoor recreation on New Year's Day. Events range from 1 to 4 miles, with options for snowshoeing, self-guided exploration, and accessible trails. First Day Hikes are free to attend, though a Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required at most locations (free passes available at participating libraries).

How to use this guide

Wisconsin's 25 First Day Hike locations span from Douglas County near Lake Superior to Kenosha County near the Illinois border. We've organized this guide into five geographic regions: Northwest, Northeast, Central, Southeast, and Southwest. Each listing includes the exact address, event time, meeting location, trail details, pet policies, and what makes that location special. A quick-reference table at the end lets you compare all options at a glance.

Pro tip: Events are weather-dependent and may be canceled due to dangerous wind chills or icy conditions. Call the property office or check the DNR Events Calendar (dnr.wisconsin.gov/events) on the morning of January 1st.
