Rediscover Wisconsin: Patrick Kinney on Parks, Adventure, and Raising Outdoor Kids

Rediscover Wisconsin

Pictured Rocks

For Patrick Kinney, the outdoors is a way of life. From childhood days spent wandering the woods near the Kettle Moraine State Forest to spontaneous hikes and waterfall-chasing adventures across the state, his connection to nature has never faded.

In this conversation with North Shore Family Adventures, Patrick shares what keeps drawing him back outside, why Wisconsin’s landscapes continue to surprise him, and how families can turn even a simple walk into something memorable. Along the way, he highlights favorite spots like Devil's Lake State Park and Harrington Beach State Park—and reminds us that sometimes the best adventures come from not knowing exactly where the day will lead.

What first got you into visiting parks and exploring the outdoors so regularly?

When I was a child, times were different. I grew up in the outdoors. I had breakfast and headed straight outside. I was fortunate enough to live close to the Southern Kettle Moraine forest. We knew where the natural springs were, built forts throughout the woods, and would wander miles on our adventures. We always made sure to be home by 5:00 p.m. If we were late, we might miss dinner.

As I grew older, the adventure stayed with me. I never stray from walking down a stream, climbing, or discovering a new area.

It sounds cliche. I need to disconnect. We live in such a busy world now and everything moves so fast. It is easy to become disillusioned by the pace and the constant supply of media. Outdoors keep me grounded and dependant on the real world around me.

What do you love most about outdoor travel in Wisconsin?

First and foremost the people. Community members at every State Park and trail are very welcoming and always offer insights. Always take a moment to talk to park rangers and fellow hikers, and join outdoor / hiking groups on social media.

The variation of environments is amazing. Our lakeshore parks offer beauty comparable to any ocean front. We also have some of the most beautiful bluffs around, surrounded by lush forests.

How do you decide which park or trail to visit next?

Selecting a park involves a lot of spontaneity. Sometimes it comes down to an area we never hiked in the winter, or the spring thaw increasing the water flow, allowing us to see the waterfalls. Seasonal changes completely change an environment you may feel familiar with. You would be surprised how much further you can see along a cliff line with bare trees in fall.

What are some of your favorite parks in Wisconsin and why?

Visit some areas around Devil's Lake. Parfrey's Glen, head to Lodi and make a climb up Gibralter Rock on the Ice Age Trail.

Did you know you can feed the birds by hand at Harrington Beach State Park while circling the old quarry?

Cave Point and Peninsula State Park offer beautiful views. Talk to the locals in Door County and often they will share a few hidden areas.

Is there an underrated park or outdoor spot more people should know about?

Mauthe Lake offers a lot for a nice swim and paddle boarding.

Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area and Ledge Park in Dodge County offer some beautiful views.

Harrington Beach offers the best of both worlds. A nice beach on Lake Michigan and some beautiful trails for a walk.

Explore some caves at Maribel Caves County Park.

Which parks would you recommend for families with young kids?

Devil's Lake State Park.

Devil's Lake State Park

Devils Lake State Park has a perfect lake for summer activities. Keep your children on a short leash if you decide to circle the bluffs. However, Devils Lake State Park can be very busy. Try Point Beach or Harrington Beach for a nice swim and some light hiking.

Horicon Marsh Visitor Center in Horicon has an inviting visitor center and an informational museum for children to explore. A small fee is required to enter the museum.

What advice would you give parents trying to get their kids more excited about being outside?

Make the outdoors an adventure. Look for cool rocks, fossils, antlers, and arrowheads. Get the family excited about photos. Take a picture of the perfect wave, a herd of deer, and the plant life. Teach your children hiking and survival tips while heading down a trail.

What does adventure mean to you personally?

Not knowing what the day will bring.

Coming home tired in a good way.

What have your travels taught you?

Good shoes and boots make a huge difference.

Be prepared and have a loaded backpack , you will need it.

You never know when a day trip can turn into an overnight trip.

I was out on a long hike and found a large portion of the trail washed out, which made navigation tricky. I was happy to have everything I needed in my backpack to survive the night.

Extra food and always carry water and refill the bottle at every opportunity.
