All Aboard! Milwaukee County Zoo Celebrates New Train
The Milwaukee County Zoo’s new Engine No. 2025, a sleek 15-inch Tier 4 diesel hydraulic locomotive, made its grand arrival at the Zoo on August 8th, marking a historic milestone for this cherished family attraction.
Engine No. 2025 represents a significant investment in the Zoo's future. Built by Swanee River Railroad Company in Lufkin, Texas, this 20-foot-long, 45-inch-wide locomotive is the first engine built for the Zoo outside of Wisconsin. The builder personally accompanied the engine on its journey from Texas, working closely with Zoo staff to ensure optimal performance on the existing tracks.
Modeled after an F40-PHL style locomotive, Engine No. 2025 features modern amenities including dash-mounted air conditioning, an advanced camera system, digital engine readouts, and controls for the air bell, horn, and sanders. With capacity for two people to ride inside, the engine will prove invaluable for engineer training and daily operations.
The new engine will join the Zoo's existing fleet this fall, becoming the third locomotive alongside Engine No. 1992 and Engine No. 1958. The North Shore Bank Safari Train has been creating magical memories for families since its inception, carrying over 20 million riders on scenic journeys through the Zoo grounds.
This Saturday's celebration offers families a unique opportunity to be part of Zoo history while enjoying a perfect blend of education, entertainment, and nostalgia.
