Celebrate 10 Years of Community and Cycling at Chris' Slow Roll
On Sunday, September 21st, 2025, the lakefront will come alive with the sounds of spinning wheels laughter, and community spirit to celebrate the 10th Annual Chris' Slow Roll. This beloved Milwaukee tradition offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure, family fun, and meaningful connection that makes for an unforgettable day on the North Shore.
What started as a heartfelt tribute has blossomed into one of Milwaukee's most cherished cycling events. Back in 2016, when Chris Kegel was facing terminal illness, his friends and family wanted to honor him in the most fitting way possible – through his favorite activity, biking. Within just one week of planning, over a thousand people gathered for that first ride, proving that "The More the Merrier" wasn't just a slogan, but a truth about our community's spirit.
Today, Chris' Slow Roll continues that legacy, bringing together cyclists of all ages and abilities for a celebration that goes far beyond just pedaling. It's become a testament to how bikes can serve as the common thread that weaves our community together.
If you're looking for a family adventure that checks all the boxes – free, accessible, scenic, and genuinely fun – Chris' Slow Roll delivers. The 10-mile route starts at the War Memorial parking lot downtown and meanders north along Lincoln Memorial Drive through some of Milwaukee's most beautiful lakefront scenery. You'll cruise through Shorewood before looping back on the Oak Leaf Trail, ending right where you started.
The ride is designed to be leisurely and welcoming to all skill levels. Whether your little ones are just learning to ride or your teenagers think they're too cool for family activities (spoiler: they'll love this), the Slow Roll creates space for everyone to participate comfortably.
More Than Just a Ride
The beauty of Chris' Slow Roll lies in what happens after the pedaling stops. From 11:30am to 2:00pm, the War Memorial transforms into a community celebration, complete with a beer garden courtesy of Kegel's Inn. Riders enjoy a complimentary brat and beverage – the perfect reward after a scenic lakefront cruise.
The afternoon festivities include an official presentation at noon and the crowd-favorite Blindfolded Tire Changing Competition at 12:30pm. It's exactly as entertaining as it sounds and adds that perfect touch of lighthearted competition to keep everyone engaged.
Getting There and Getting Started
Planning your family's participation is refreshingly simple. If you're biking to the event, head straight to the War Memorial parking lot where free bike parking awaits. Driving? Consider parking at the Art Museum lot, Veterans Park, or the McKinley area.
The day kicks off at 9:00am with registration and t-shirt pickup, followed by a welcome speech and group photo at 10:00am. The ride officially departs at 10:05am, giving you plenty of time to get the family organized and excited.
In a world where family activities often come with hefty price tags, Chris' Slow Roll stands out as a completely free opportunity to create lasting memories while supporting a meaningful cause.
Whether you're seasoned cyclists or this will be your family's first group ride, Chris' Slow Roll welcomes you with open arms. Come for the scenery, stay for the celebration, and leave with a deeper appreciation for both biking and the incredible community we call home.
