Best Beaches in Milwaukee’s North Shore: 2026 Family Guide

Lake Michigan gives Milwaukee’s North Shore a string of scenic beaches, bluff parks and nature preserves. Families can choose a traditional sandy beach, a short shoreline stop or a hike that ends at the water.

2026 water-quality note

Atwater Park, Big Bay Park, Klode Park and Tietjen Doctors Park are all listed as monitored Milwaukee County beaches on Wisconsin’s 2026 beach list. Conditions can change after rain, high waves or bacteria tests, so check the current advisory map on the day of your visit and follow posted signs at the beach.

Check current Wisconsin beach advisories

Most North Shore beaches do not have lifeguards. Keep children within arm’s reach near the water, watch for changing waves and currents, and never assume that a beach listed as open is supervised.

Schlitz Audubon Nature Center (Bayside)

Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve

Lion’s Den Gorge in Grafton, Wisconsin

Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve (9275 N. Port Washington Rd., Grafton) – On the northern edge of Mequon, Lion’s Den is a must-see bluff park. It’s 73 acres of Lake Michigan shoreline wilderness with towering limestone bluffs (90–100 ft high) overlooking a long sandy pocket beach. Boardwalks and stairways descend through a deep “gorge” to the shore, offering stunning views along the way. The park has miles of hiking trails, picnic tables near the parking, and newly built bathrooms/picnic pavilion at the top. Families can hike down to explore driftwood or wade in the shallow water – but again, no lifeguards (and the currents can be strong); life jackets are recommended. Lion’s Den also allows fishing from the bluff edge, and its wetlands attract songbirds, making it a great learning adventure for kids. (Pro Tip: visit in the morning or fall for fewer crowds – it’s Ozaukee’s most popular park.)

Parking & Access: Lion’s Den have ample free parking lots. Open 6 am–9 pm year-round. There are no concession stands; bring snacks or have lunch at nearby restaurants.

Hidden Gem: Just northeast of Mequon is Wanek Park (1107 N. Lake Shore Dr., Ozaukee County) – it’s a hidden sand beach with a paddle boat rental (seasonal) and playground, perfect if you’re willing to drive ~10 min north past Lion’s Den.

Big Bay Park

Location: Whitefish Bay
Highlights:

  • Quiet Retreat: Typically less crowded, great for those seeking a peaceful beach day.

  • Lake Overlook: There’s a small bluff area with lovely views of Lake Michigan—an excellent photo opportunity.

  • Picnic-Friendly: Shaded spots and open grass areas are available for a leisurely family meal.

Though smaller, Big Bay offers a sense of calm that many families appreciate when they want a low-key afternoon by the lake.

Atwater Beach (Shorewood)

Atwater Beach in Shorewood, WI

Atwater Beach (Shorewood)

Atwater combines a sandy shoreline with bluff-top green space and Lake Michigan views. Visitors can use the long stairway or paved path to reach the beach. The climb back to the top is substantial, so plan extra time with strollers, wagons or tired children.

Atwater is included in Wisconsin’s 2026 monitored-beach list, with water-quality sampling scheduled twice weekly during the monitoring season. Check current advisories before swimming.

Klode Beach (Whitefish Bay)

Klode Park is at 5960 N. Lake Drive in Whitefish Bay and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The park includes bluff-top picnic space, a playground, restrooms in the warming house and a trail descending to Lake Michigan.

Klode is also monitored twice weekly during the 2026 beach season. The Village directs swimmers to Wisconsin’s current beach-closing and advisory information before entering the water. There are no lifeguards, so families should treat Lake Michigan conditions seriously even on calm-looking days.

The Village completed additional sand restoration at the south end of Klode Beach in May 2026 following earlier washouts. Shoreline conditions can continue to change, so obey any temporary signs or barriers during your visit.

Doctor’s Park

Location: Fox Point
Highlights:

  • Wooded Trails: Follow winding pathways down through a serene forested ravine before reaching the beach.

  • Natural Setting: Enjoy a more rustic beachfront surrounded by lush greenery.

  • Playground & Picnic Areas: Up near the main park area, you’ll find places to grill, picnic tables, and a classic playground.

Doctor’s Park has a truly “hidden gem” atmosphere, with a balance of woodland exploration and lakeside tranquility. It’s a great spot if you want to do a little hiking or nature spotting with the family before settling on the sand.

Other Beaches to Explore

Bradford Beach (Milwaukee): While not strictly in the “north shore” suburbs, Bradford is close by and remains one of the most popular beaches in Milwaukee. With volleyball courts, concessions, and frequent events, it’s a lively choice for families with older kids or teens who love people-watching and an upbeat atmosphere.

Tips for a Great Day at the Beach

  • Arrive Early: Parking can fill up quickly in the summer, especially at smaller beaches.

  • Pack Smart: Bring towels, sunscreen, extra water, snacks, and a blanket if you plan to stay a while.

  • Check Conditions: Before heading out, keep an eye on the weather forecast and any beach advisories for current swimming conditions.
