Pet-free Door County lodging: A guide for allergy-sufferers

The Ashbrooke Hotel

The Ashbrooke Hotel, an allergy-friendly stay in Egg Harbor

Booking Door County lodging when you or your kids have pet allergies isn't as simple as ticking a "no pets" box on Expedia.

Pet dander can linger in a hotel room for four to six months after the last furry guest checked out — and in some studies allergens persist 20 to 30 weeks. One frequently cited study even found measurable cat and dog allergens in 100% of hotel rooms tested, including rooms in officially pet-free hotels, because dander travels on other guests' clothing.

That's why "this room doesn't allow pets" is not the same thing as "this property has never allowed pets." For a traveler with asthma or a severe dander allergy, the difference between a restless, wheezy weekend and a relaxing getaway often comes down to choosing a property that is strictly pet-free across the entire building and grounds, year-round.

The good news for Milwaukee-area families: Door County has dozens of lovely inns, resorts, B&Bs and cottages that have never welcomed pets — many of them explicitly marketing themselves as pet-free to attract allergy-sensitive guests. Below is the most complete list we've put together, organized by town from Sturgeon Bay all the way up to Washington Island, plus the exact questions to ask before you hit "book."

How we vetted every property on this list

We only included a property if at least one of these conditions was met:

  • The property's own website explicitly states pets are not allowed

  • The pet policy was confirmed on Booking.com, Expedia, BringFido, or a Destination Door County listing

  • The property publicly markets itself as "pet-free" or "smoke-free and pet-free"

Where possible we noted properties that take it a step further — banning even emotional-support animals (only ADA-certified service animals are permitted, per federal law), or describing specific cleaning protocols. Policies change, so always reconfirm by email before booking.

Sturgeon Bay

Sturgeon Bay is the gateway to the peninsula and has the deepest bench of strictly pet-free lodging — ideal for families driving up from Milwaukee who want to settle in quickly.

Glidden Lodge Beach Resort sits on the "Quiet Side" of the peninsula about 10 minutes from downtown and is the single clearest pet-free marketer in the county. The rates page explicitly says "non-smoking and pet-free," and the property excludes emotional-support animals (ADA service dogs only). The 1-to-3-bedroom condos are beachfront with a heated pool, sauna, tennis, and private sand on Lake Michigan. Mid-range to luxury. gliddenlodge.com / 866-454-3336.

Bay Shore Inn of Door County is a family-friendly Green Bay resort with 1-2 bedroom condo suites, a private beach, indoor and outdoor heated pools, complimentary kayaks, and a playground. Staff have confirmed on TripAdvisor Q&A: "No, they do not" allow pets. Mid-range. bayshoreinn.net / 920-743-4551.

Stone Harbor Resort & Conference Center is a downtown waterfront resort next to the Steel Bridge with 161 rooms and suites, indoor and outdoor pools, and the on-site Brygga Plates & Pours restaurant. Hotel rooms are pet-free (the outdoor pub seating is dog-friendly, but that's separate). Mid-range. stoneharbor-resort.com / 920-746-0700.

For couples and adults-only travelers, Sturgeon Bay also offers four classic B&Bs that are strictly pet-free:

  • White Lace Inn — An 18-room Victorian B&B across four restored turn-of-the-century homes with canopy beds, fireplaces, gardens, and a full breakfast that accommodates gluten-free and vegan diets. whitelaceinn.com / 920-743-1105.

  • Chanticleer Guest House — Eight suites on 30 private acres of orchards with a seasonal heated outdoor pool, barrel sauna, and breakfast delivered to your door. Adults only. chanticleerguesthouse.com / 920-746-0334.

  • Inn at Cedar Crossing — A 9-room 1884 boutique inn above a highly rated restaurant in downtown Sturgeon Bay. The property's own site specifically advertises "no children, no pets." innatcedarcrossing.com.

  • The Black Walnut Guest House — A 4-room 1899 Victorian where cooked-to-order breakfast is delivered to your room and accommodates gluten-free, dairy-free, and egg-free diets. Travel Green certified. blackwalnut-gh.com / 920-743-8892.

Egg Harbor

Egg Harbor has the highest concentration of explicitly pet-free resorts in Door County — several publish their policy right on their own FAQ pages.

The Ashbrooke Hotel is the gold standard for allergy-sensitive couples. This adults-only (16+) boutique hotel has 36 rooms, an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, sun terrace, and fire pit. The official FAQ states: "Only animals allowed on the Ashbrooke Hotel's grounds are service animals." Ranked #1 of 6 Egg Harbor hotels. Mid-range to luxury, roughly $183–$250/night. ashbrooke.net.

The Landmark Resort is the largest resort in Door County — 40 wooded acres of condo-style suites with an indoor pool open 24/7, three outdoor pools, five whirlpools, tennis, pickleball, and the on-site Ember by Fireside restaurant. The FAQ reads plainly: "Pets are not allowed anywhere throughout the resort property." Mid-range. thelandmarkresort.com / 920-868-3205.

The Landing Resort has one of the most airtight policies in Wisconsin: "No pets or support animals are allowed on the property or in the units." Even ADA service animals get the strictest possible interpretation. Sixteen suites on 5 wooded acres with indoor and outdoor pools, a hot tub, arcade, and playground. Budget to mid-range (from $85 off-season). thelandingresort.com / 920-868-3282.

Newport Resort offers 59 luxury one- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens, gas fireplaces, and double whirlpool tubs, plus indoor and outdoor pools, free bikes, and continental breakfast. Marketed as a "smoke-free and pet-free environment." Mid-range from $124. newportresort.com.

Egg Harbor Lodge is a small adults-only property (25 water-view units) with an outdoor pool, putting green, and walking trail. The reservation-policies page simply says: "Pets are not allowed." Seasonal May–October. eggharborlodge.com / 920-868-3115.

Alpine Resort & Golf, a historic lakeside resort operating since 1922, has cottages and clubhouse rooms surrounded by a 27-hole championship course. Website FAQ: "The resort does not allow pets on property." Mid-range. alpineresort.com / 920-868-3000.

For budget travelers, Lull-Abi Inn is a 24-room motel where the official site confirms: "All rooms are smoke-free… and we do not allow pets." Budget. lullabi-inn.com.

Fish Creek: Historic inns with strict no-pet policies

Fish Creek is arguably Door County's prettiest harbor village and home to some of its most beloved historic inns — all of which happen to be strictly pet-free.

White Gull Inn, the peninsula's iconic 1896 inn, puts it gently on its website: "Although we cannot accommodate pets, we will be happy to recommend a nearby pet-friendly hotel." Full breakfast is included, rooms and cottages have air conditioning, fireplaces, and whirlpool baths, and the on-site restaurant is famous for its fish boils. Open year-round. whitegullinn.com / 920-868-3517.

Thorp House Inn & Cottages, the TripAdvisor #1-rated B&B in Fish Creek, states on its policies page: "No pets allowed at our property." Six elegant Inn rooms (adults only) and six family-friendly 1-2 bedroom cottages on a wooded hillside one block off Main Street. Whirlpools, fireplaces, and a fresh-baked breakfast in the main inn. Mid-range to luxury. thorphouseinn.com / 920-868-2444.

Whistling Swan Inn is the oldest operating inn on the Door peninsula (originally built 1887), with elegantly appointed rooms and suites in the historic Welcker District. Confirmed pet-free via Destination Door County listing; the downstairs restaurant is highly regarded for contemporary American cuisine. Mid-range, roughly $193–$247/night. whistlingswan.com / 920-868-3442.

Homestead Suites is a 48-room family-friendly hotel at the entrance to Peninsula State Park with indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpools, sauna, and free continental breakfast. The official Trivago listing confirms straight from the innkeepers: "We are a no smoking and no pet property." Mid-range. homesteadsuites.com.

Heads up on two properties you may see advertised in Fish Creek: Julie's Park Cafe & Motel has pet-friendly rooms (skip if you're allergic), and the Settlement Courtyard Inn has mixed pet-friendly units so the whole property shares HVAC — not ideal for severe allergies.

Ephraim

Eagle Harbor Inn is one of Ephraim's most beloved stays — 41 rooms and whirlpool suites on 5 acres in the Historic District with an indoor current pool, sauna, and playground. Booked.net and HotelPlanner both confirm: "Service animals complying with ADA Title III regulations are allowed. Sorry, pets are not allowed." Mid-range to luxury, nightly rates averaging $286. eagleharborinn.com.

Ephraim Shores Resort sits on the waterfront at 10018 Water Street with an indoor pool and whirlpool, private sand beach across the road, and lake-view rooms. The official policies page and Booking.com both confirm: "Pets are not allowed." Mid-range, typically $145+. ephraimshores.com.

Bay Breeze Resort offers 29 individually decorated units on Eagle Harbor with a private sand beach, outdoor heated pool, Kohler rain showers or jetted tubs, and EV charging. Booking.com verified: "Pets are not allowed." Travel Green certified. Mid-range to luxury. baybreezeresort.com.

Cliff Dwellers Resort has been welcoming Ephraim guests since 1957 with cottages and townhouses featuring indoor whirlpool and sauna, outdoor pool, bikes, and rowboats. The Destination Door County listing reads: "Sorry no pets and no smoking inside any facility." Mid-range, $119–$240.

Pine Grove Resort is a waterfront resort on Eagle Harbor with Ephraim's only untouched natural shoreline and a 40-foot pier with a screened gazebo — separate from the pet-friendly Ephraim Shores lineup. Contact via ephraim-doorcounty.com to confirm directly.

One caution in Ephraim: Edgewater Resort, Somerset Inn, Ephraim Village Cottages, and Trollhaugen Lodge all have pet-friendly rooms mixed in with standard rooms. For severe allergies, avoid these — even "non-pet" rooms share HVAC with pet rooms.

Sister Bay

The DöRR Hotel is a stunning 47-room Scandinavian-design boutique hotel with soundproof walls, Bose speakers, premium bedding, fireplace suites, and balconies. The policy is unambiguous: "Sorry, we DO NOT allow pets in the hotel. There will be a $500 cleaning fee if… a pet [was] brought into the room." The property uses a PremierOne air purification system on its public HVAC and partners with ECOLAB for cleaning — a dream for allergy sufferers. Books direct only, no third-party sites. $125–$650/night. thedorrhotel.com.

Also pet-free in Sister Bay:

  • Liberty Lodge at Sister Bay — "We love our pets as well as yours, however we do not allow them on the property."

  • Little Sister Resort — Advertised as a "totally smoke-free and no pets allowed facility."

  • The Inn at Little Sister Hill — "Sorry, no pets allowed" (also smoke-free).

  • Sister Bay Inn — Enforces a $300 cleaning fee if any pet evidence is found.

Skip Country House Resort, Open Hearth Lodge, and Scandia Cottages in Sister Bay — all are actively dog-friendly with dedicated pet wings.

Baileys Harbor

Blacksmith Inn on the Shore is an adults-only waterfront B&B that states plainly on its site: "We do not accommodate large groups, guests under eighteen, pets, or events." Rooms have double whirlpools, fireplaces, and private balconies over the harbor. Luxury.

Gordon Lodge is a classic waterfront resort on North Bay with a pool, marina, restaurant, and tennis. No pets allowed (confirmed by BringFido, Booking.com, and Priceline). Mid-range to luxury.

Baileys Harbor Yacht Club Resort is a smoke-free, pet-free resort with a $500 cleaning fee for violations. Mid-range.

Note: Beachfront Inn and Ridges Inn & Suites in Baileys Harbor are both actively pet-friendly — skip both.

Ellison Bay, Gills Rock & Washington Island

Up in the quieter northern reaches:

  • The Ellison Inn & Lounge (Ellison Bay) is strictly pet-free, with a $200+ cleaning fee and no emotional support animals — ADA service dogs only.

  • Four Elements Lodging (Washington Island) offers adults-only 2-person cottages with a confirmed no-pets policy.

Washington Island has several pet-friendly properties (Viking Village, Steffen's Cedar Lodge, Hotel Washington's Cottage), so verify policies carefully if booking elsewhere on the island.

Jacksonport

Square Rigger Lodge is the pick if you want Lake Michigan on a quiet stretch — 286 feet of private sand beach, a beachfront coffee shop, plus lodge rooms, 5 cottages, and a 4-bedroom rental house. Confirmed "no pets" per Jacksonport's tourism directory and Booking.com. Open mid-May through late October. Budget to mid-range; motel rooms $100–$165, cottages $180–$550 daily. squareriggerlodge.com / 920-823-2404.

Strictly pet-free vacation rentals and cottages

Most Door County property management companies (Door County Cottages, Ephraim Village Cottages, Simple Life Rentals, Rent Door County) operate mixed portfolios where individual homeowners decide — which means most of their inventory allows pets. For allergy safety, book only from owners with blanket no-pet policies:

  • Door-County-Rentals.com's cliff-top cottages in Baileys Harbor — "Same Time Next Year" (couples) and "All About the Lake Shore" (sleeps 4). Both advertise: "Open May through October, no pets or fireworks allowed." Cliff-top fire pits, fireplaces, and private beach access. 715-252-1628.

  • The Shallows Resort (Egg Harbor) — 400 feet of Green Bay frontage with motel rooms, suites, townhouses, and cottages. Listed as no pets with a 3-night minimum, year-round. shallows.com / 800-257-1560.

  • Square Rigger Lodge cottages (Jacksonport, above) — the Lake Breeze House has 4 BR/3 BA with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, gas fireplace, and office space.

For VRBO and Airbnb searches, filter with the "no pets" checkbox, then always message the owner to confirm whether a pet has ever stayed in the unit and whether the owner's own pets ever visit the property.

Qestions to ask

Get answers in writing via email — it's your best leverage if you arrive and the room is unsuitable.

  1. Is this a 100% pet-free property, or are pets allowed in some rooms or cottages?

  2. Has a pet ever stayed in this specific room, suite, or cottage?

  3. Do the owners, innkeepers, or cleaning staff bring pets onto the grounds?

  4. Does this room share HVAC or ductwork with any pet-permitted rooms?

  5. What kind of flooring does the room have — carpet, hardwood, tile, or LVT?

  6. What are the cleaning protocols between guests? HEPA vacuums? Steam cleaning of upholstery?

  7. Are there down or feather pillows, duvets, or comforters I can request be swapped for synthetic?

  8. Are HEPA air purifiers available, either in-room or as whole-property filtration?

  9. What's your policy on emotional-support animals vs. ADA service animals?

  10. If I arrive and the room shows evidence of pet hair or dander, will you move me or refund the stay?

Why "pet-free building" beats "pet-free room"

Inside a mixed-pet property, requesting a "pet-free room" is a weak safeguard. HVAC systems circulate dander throughout every room each time heating or cooling runs. Cat allergen (Fel d 1) is extraordinarily small — small enough to slip past standard filters and has been detected in homes, schools, and even remote islands that have never hosted cats. Carpet, upholstery, drapes, and mattresses retain allergens for months even after a pet is removed, and professional steam cleaning only reduces carpet allergens by 85–95%.

This is why, for anyone with significant pet allergies, a property that has never hosted pets — like The DöRR Hotel, The Ashbrooke, Glidden Lodge, The Landing Resort, or Eagle Harbor Inn — is categorically safer than a pet-friendly hotel with a "no-pet" wing.

What to pack in your allergy travel kit

Even at the strictest pet-free hotel, you'll inhale dander on the drive up and on your own clothing. Pack this and you'll sleep better:

  • Daily antihistamines, nasal corticosteroid sprays, and a rescue inhaler in original labeled containers (carry-on only)

  • A compact portable HEPA air purifier (under 3 lbs, rated for 150–300 sq ft) to run for 30 minutes before unpacking

  • An allergen-proof pillowcase and your own hypoallergenic pillow from home

  • Fragrance-free cleaning wipes for the nightstand, remote, light switches, and headboard

  • A saline nasal rinse to flush pollen and dander at day's end

  • Epinephrine auto-injectors if prescribed (TSA allows above standard liquid limits)

  • At least 1.5× your trip length in medications in case of delays

Once you arrive, remove the bedspread and decorative pillows (rarely laundered between guests), put your allergen-proof case on the hotel pillow, and shower before bed to rinse off anything you picked up in transit.

Watch out for these Door County listings

Watch for these warning signs when browsing:

  • Language like "pet-friendly rooms available upon request" — almost always means shared HVAC

  • Photos showing pet bowls, dog beds, or paw-print decor

  • Reviews casually mentioning "our dog loved it" in a property advertised as pet-free

  • Wall-to-wall carpeting, heavy drapes, or upholstered headboards listed prominently in amenities

  • Listings managed by rental companies whose main marketing is "dog-friendly Door County"

  • Hosts who mention living on the property with their own pets (even in a separate unit)

The bottom line

Door County offers more genuinely pet-free, strictly-enforced lodging per capita than nearly any Wisconsin destination. For peace of mind with severe allergies, our top picks by travel style are:

  • Best for families: The Landmark Resort (Egg Harbor), Bay Shore Inn (Sturgeon Bay), Homestead Suites (Fish Creek)

  • Best for couples: The DöRR Hotel (Sister Bay), The Ashbrooke (Egg Harbor), Blacksmith Inn on the Shore (Baileys Harbor)

  • Best for B&B lovers: White Lace Inn, Chanticleer Guest House, Thorp House Inn

  • Best waterfront luxury: Glidden Lodge Beach Resort (Sturgeon Bay), Eagle Harbor Inn (Ephraim)

  • Best budget: The Landing Resort, Square Rigger Lodge, Lull-Abi Inn

Book direct when you can, email owners before you reserve, and carry a portable HEPA purifier — and Door County's cherry blossoms, fish boils, and Lake Michigan sunsets are all yours without the wheeze.

Policies and prices current as of April 2026 and subject to change. Always reconfirm pet policies directly with each property before booking.
