Indoor activities for families in Door County
Hands On Art Studio
Door County may be best known for beaches, state parks and waterfront sunsets, but the peninsula also has an impressive collection of indoor and all-weather attractions. Families can bowl in vintage alleys, play classic arcade games, paint pottery, explore maritime history, catch a show or spend an afternoon playing board games.
This guide is especially helpful for rainy summer days, unpredictable spring and fall weather, and winter getaways when many seasonal attractions are closed.
For more trip-planning ideas, see our complete Door County family travel guide and our guide to visiting Door County with kids in every season.
One important planning note: Door County hours change frequently, especially outside the summer season. Always check an attraction’s current schedule before making a long drive.
NORTH SHORE FAMILY ADVENTURES
Indoor Family Activities in Door County
Explore bowling, museums, art studios, live music, theaters, pools, restaurants and other rainy-day destinations.
Hours and seasonal availability can change. Check with each destination before making a special trip.
Bowling, arcades and indoor entertainment
Door County has several bowling options, not just two, plus vintage arcade games, board games, golf simulators and axe throwing.
Sister Bay Bowl
10640 N. Bay Shore Drive, Sister Bay
Sister Bay Bowl is a fourth-generation family business with six vintage bowling lanes and an attached supper club. Bowlers still keep score by hand, adding to the wonderfully old-fashioned experience.
The kids’ menu includes a complimentary game of bowling, while the restaurant serves pizza, steaks, broasted chicken and its popular Friday fish fry. Lane availability can vary around league play and busy dining periods, so calling ahead is wise.
Sister Bay Bowl is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2026. Learn more in our complete Sister Bay family guide.
Cherry Lanes Arcade Bar
127 N. Fourth Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
Located in a building dating to 1929, Cherry Lanes Arcade Bar combines restored bowling lanes with vintage arcade games, pinball, pool, foosball and casual food.
The arcade’s quarter-priced games make this one of the most affordable rainy-day stops in Sturgeon Bay. Families are welcome, although the atmosphere becomes more adult-oriented later in the evening.
Apple Valley Lanes and Chaser’s Sports Bar
1217 N. 14th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
The original article incorrectly stated that Door County had only two bowling alleys. Apple Valley Lanes gives Sturgeon Bay another traditional bowling option, with 12 lanes, bumper bowling, league play and an attached bar and grill.
Open-bowling availability can change during league season, so call (920) 743-6997 before visiting.
The Gnoshery at Gnome Games
23 N. Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
The Gnoshery is a board-game café featuring thousands of tabletop games available to play or purchase. The kitchen serves sandwiches, soups, drinks and other casual “gnoshables,” and the staff can help families choose a game.
The café also holds Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, miniature-painting and other gaming events. Check the Gnoshery event calendar before visiting.
Door County Sandbox
1023 Egg Harbor Road, Sturgeon Bay
Door County Sandbox offers indoor golf and multi-sport simulators, projected-target axe throwing, pool, darts and a restaurant.
The larger Door County Boardwalk complex also includes Door County Gala and the separate Virlee Gunworks indoor shooting facility. Age requirements apply to certain activities, so families should confirm which options are appropriate for their children when reserving.
Egg Harbor Fun Park
Egg Harbor Fun Park includes an indoor arcade along with outdoor go-karts, batting cages, mini golf and other seasonal attractions.
The arcade can provide a break from light rain, but this is primarily a summer attraction rather than a dependable year-round indoor destination.
Movie theaters
Sturgeon Bay Cinema 6
1820 Alabama Street, Sturgeon Bay
Sturgeon Bay Cinema 6 is Door County’s primary indoor movie theater, showing first-run films on six screens. Showtimes vary by season, with more matinees generally offered during summer and school breaks.
Check the theater’s website for current showtimes and discount promotions rather than relying on previously published ticket prices.
Skyway Drive-In Theatre
The Skyway Drive-In Theatre is not technically indoors, but it can still work during light rain because families watch from their vehicles.
Operating since 1950, the theater presents seasonal double features with sound broadcast over FM radio. Its schedule varies throughout spring, summer and fall, so check the calendar before heading out.
Museums that engage children
Door County Maritime Museum
120 N. Madison Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
The Door County Maritime Museum is one of the best all-weather family attractions in the county.
Its 10-story Jim Kress Maritime Lighthouse Tower explores navigation, shipbuilding, shipwrecks and Great Lakes commerce. The top-floor observation deck offers panoramic views of the working Sturgeon Bay waterfront.
Families can also tour the restored 1919 tugboat John Purves when tours are operating. Height, age and mobility restrictions may apply because visitors navigate ladders and tight spaces aboard the vessel.
Allow at least 90 minutes for the museum and longer if you add the tugboat tour. The museum participates in the national Museums for All program for eligible families.
Death’s Door Maritime Museum
12724 W. Wisconsin Bay Road, Gills Rock
The seasonal Death’s Door Maritime Museum is a smaller companion to the Sturgeon Bay museum. Exhibits focus on commercial fishing, scuba diving, shipwrecks and the waters around Death’s Door.
Its more compact size can work well for younger children. Despite the Ellison Bay mailing address sometimes associated with it, the museum is located in Gills Rock.
Door County Historical Museum
18 N. Fourth Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
The free Door County Historical Museum is a terrific short stop in downtown Sturgeon Bay.
Children particularly enjoy the restored fire engine and Pioneer Fire Station exhibit. The museum also contains a large wildlife diorama, historical artifacts and displays tracing Door County’s development.
The museum operates on a reduced schedule during the colder months, so confirm its current days before visiting.
Miller Art Museum
107 S. Fourth Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
Located inside the Sturgeon Bay branch of the Door County Library, the free Miller Art Museum presents rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection centered on Wisconsin artists.
Families should watch for children’s workshops, gallery activities and special events. Because exhibitions change, even repeat visitors can encounter something new.
Nature centers with indoor exhibits
These destinations combine indoor learning with trails and outdoor exploration. They are particularly useful when the forecast includes intermittent showers rather than an all-day downpour.
Crossroads at Big Creek
2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay
Crossroads at Big Creek is a nonprofit nature preserve, learning center and historical site with trails, exhibits and frequent family programs.
Offerings can include preschool nature programs, science activities, astronomy events and seasonal workshops. Admission to the preserve is free, although program schedules and building hours vary.
The Ridges Sanctuary
8166 Highway 57, Baileys Harbor
The Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center at The Ridges Sanctuary introduces visitors to the unusual plants, wildlife and geology of Wisconsin’s oldest nonprofit nature preserve.
The nature center is indoors, but much of the family experience—including the accessible boardwalk and Family Discovery Trail—is outside. It works best when families can slip onto the trails between showers.
Whitefish Dunes State Park Nature Center
3275 Clark Lake Road, Sturgeon Bay
The Whitefish Dunes State Park nature center includes exhibits about dunes, ecology and the area’s human history.
Nature-center hours are more limited than park hours and can change seasonally. A Wisconsin state park vehicle admission pass is required to enter the park.
Open Door Bird Sanctuary
4114 County Road I, Jacksonport
Open Door Bird Sanctuary cares for resident raptors that cannot be released into the wild. Public visiting days can include opportunities to see eagles, hawks, falcons and owls while learning about rehabilitation and conservation.
This is primarily an outdoor attraction with limited shelter, so it is better for cloudy or drizzly weather than heavy rain. Public hours are seasonal, with private tours available by arrangement.
Art studios and creative workshops
Hands On Art Studio
3655 Peninsula Players Road, Fish Creek
Hands On Art Studio is one of Door County’s most dependable rainy-day destinations.
Families can choose from pottery painting, mosaics, canvas painting, jewelry, fused glass and other projects. Some activities are walk-in friendly, while specialized experiences may require advance planning or have age restrictions.
Ceramic and glass pieces generally need time for firing, so ask when they will be ready before starting a project. Shipping may be available if you are leaving before pickup.
Peninsula School of Art
3900 County Road F, Fish Creek
Peninsula School of Art offers youth workshops, summer art programs, teen opportunities and free Family Art Days on select dates.
Unlike a walk-in studio, most classes follow a scheduled program. Check the school’s calendar and registration requirements before visiting.
Door County Candle Company
At Door County Candle Company, visitors can shop for locally made candles and participate in candle-making experiences when available.
Options have included dipping colorful taper candles and pouring custom scented candles at the Candle Bar. Reservations, age guidelines and availability vary, so check before visiting.
Popelka Trenchard Glass
64 S. Second Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
Popelka Trenchard Glass is a working glass studio and gallery in downtown Sturgeon Bay. Public glassblowing demonstrations are offered on selected dates rather than continuously.
The original article also recommended Burnt Bluff Stone and Glass in Fish Creek. That business has announced that it is permanently closed, so it has been removed from the updated guide.
Live theater and music
Northern Sky Theater
Northern Sky Theater creates original musical comedies inspired by Wisconsin and Midwestern life.
Summer performances take place outdoors in Peninsula State Park, while fall and holiday productions move inside to the Gould Theater near Fish Creek. The indoor shows are the better rainy-day option, although summer outdoor performances may continue during light rain.
Northern Sky’s productions are generally family-friendly, but families should review individual show descriptions before purchasing tickets.
Third Avenue PlayWorks
239 N. Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
Third Avenue PlayWorks presents professional plays in an intimate downtown Sturgeon Bay theater. Its season can include comedies, dramas, contemporary works and special performances.
Not every production is designed for young children, so check age recommendations and subject matter first.
Birch Creek Music Performance Center
3821 County Road E, Egg Harbor
Birch Creek Music Performance Center brings advanced student musicians and professional faculty members together for summer concerts in percussion and steel pan, symphony and big-band jazz.
Most performances are indoors or under substantial cover, but programming is seasonal. Look for family concerts, matinees and holiday performances on the current calendar.
Door County Cherry Hut
The Door County Cherry Hut
8813 Highway 42, Fish Creek
The Door County Cherry Hut—the modern continuation of historic Ray’s Cherry Hut—hosts family-friendly live music every summer weekend. Performances generally take place in the spacious beer garden but move indoors when it rains, making this an especially useful stop when the weather is unsettled.
The seasonal destination also includes a market, casual food, yard games and the Bridge Up Brewing taproom. The 2026 music calendar features local and regional performers, with many shows scheduled from 3–6 p.m. Check the complete Cherry Hut live music schedule before visiting. The Cherry Hut opened for its 2026 season on May 18 and operates seasonally through October.
Indoor pools
Door County YMCA
The Door County YMCA operates facilities in Sturgeon Bay and Fish Creek.
The Sturgeon Bay branch has lap and recreational swimming areas, while the Northern Door Program Center in Fish Creek also offers indoor aquatic facilities. Pool configurations, waterslide availability, open-swim times and guest-pass rules can change, so consult the YMCA’s current aquatic schedule.
Door County resorts with indoor pools
An indoor pool can rescue an entire weekend when the forecast turns wet. Family-friendly lodging options with indoor swimming facilities include:
Bridgeport Waterfront Resort in Sturgeon Bay
Parkwood Lodge near Fish Creek
The Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor
Ephraim Shores Resort in Ephraim
Glidden Lodge Beach Resort near Sturgeon Bay
Pool access is generally limited to registered guests. Features and operating schedules can vary, especially during maintenance periods.
Restaurants where experience is part of the meal
For a broader dining overview, see our Door County restaurant guide for families and guide to the best Door County brunch spots.
PC Junction
7898 County Road A, Baileys Harbor
At PC Junction, food is delivered to counter seats aboard a model train. The restaurant also has an outdoor play area, pedal carts and other activities for use when the weather clears.
PC Junction is seasonal and can become extremely busy on rainy summer days. Check its current operating schedule and arrive outside peak dining times when possible.
Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant
10698 N. Bay Shore Drive, Sister Bay
Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant is famous for its sod-covered roof and the goats that graze on it during suitable weather.
Inside, families can order Swedish pancakes with lingonberries, meatballs and other Scandinavian specialties. The restaurant is open year-round, although the goats typically appear only during the warmer months and do not go onto the roof in poor weather.
Read our full guide to visiting Al Johnson’s with kids.
Wilson’s Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor
Operating since 1906, Wilson’s is a seasonal soda fountain known for burgers, homemade root beer, ice cream creations and its nostalgic dining room.
Its indoor seating makes it a cheerful rainy-day stop, but summer lines can be substantial.
Door County fish boils
A traditional fish boil is part meal and part performance. The dramatic outdoor boil-over is followed by an indoor meal of whitefish, potatoes, onions and Door County cherry pie.
Popular choices include:
White Gull Inn in Fish Creek
Pelletier’s Restaurant and Fish Boil in Fish Creek
Old Post Office Restaurant in Ephraim
Schedules vary dramatically by season, and reservations are strongly recommended.
Cooking and cheese experiences
Renard’s Cheese
2189 County Road DK, Sturgeon Bay
Renard’s Cheese is a family-owned cheesemaker and market offering cheese, fresh curds, specialty foods and meals from its on-site Melt Bistro.
The store is open year-round and makes an easy stop when entering or leaving Door County. Production tours are not continuously available, so contact Renard’s directly if that is an important part of your visit.
The original article included Door Artisan Cheese Company as an active tour stop. Because its visitor experience and availability could not be reliably confirmed, it has been removed from this edition.
Door County Creamery
10653 N. Bay Shore Drive, Sister Bay
Door County Creamery is known for goat-milk cheese, gelato and other locally produced foods.
Farm tours have been offered seasonally, but families should not assume tours are available every year or every day. Check directly with the creamery for the current tour schedule before planning around one.
Shopping stops children enjoy
Dancing Bear Toys
13 N. Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
Dancing Bear Toys is an independent toy store filled with puzzles, games, plush toys, children’s books and classic playthings. It is an easy pairing with the nearby historical museum, Miller Art Museum, library, candy store or Gnoshery.
Door County Rock & Gem
Door County Rock & Gem has seasonal locations in northern Door County selling minerals, fossils, crystals and jewelry.
The Ephraim-area location has offered sluice mining and geode cracking, but those activities may be outdoors or weather-dependent. Confirm location hours and activity availability before visiting.
Door County Candy
12 N. Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
Door County Candy fills a downtown Sturgeon Bay storefront with fudge, popcorn, taffy, chocolates and nostalgic candy.
Nearby Dancing Bear Toys, The Gnoshery, the historical museum and the library make this part of Sturgeon Bay particularly useful on rainy days.
Novel Bay Booksellers
44 N. Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
Novel Bay Booksellers is an independent bookstore with children’s titles, local-interest books and occasional author events.
Farm and animal attractions
These are not fully indoor attractions, but several offer covered buildings or shelters that can make them workable during passing showers.
Plum Loco Animal Farm
4431 Plum Bottom Road, Egg Harbor
Plum Loco Animal Farm combines an animal sanctuary with imaginative play areas. Children can meet ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep and other resident animals.
It is seasonal and primarily outdoors, although its play structures and shelters can provide some protection from brief showers.
Libraries as rainy-day anchors
The Door County Library operates eight branches around the county. Visitors can browse children’s books, use public spaces and attend storytimes, craft programs, LEGO activities and summer-reading events.
Schedules change throughout the year, so consult the library’s event calendar for current programs.
Sturgeon Bay Library
The main branch at 107 S. Fourth Avenue also houses the Miller Art Museum. Its central location makes it easy to combine with the historical museum, Dancing Bear Toys, Door County Candy or The Gnoshery.
Kress Pavilion and Egg Harbor Library
7845 Church Street, Egg Harbor
The Donald and Carol Kress Pavilion contains the Egg Harbor library, children’s areas, community rooms and second-floor views over the village and bay.
Programs and makerspace access depend on the day’s schedule, but the building itself is one of the peninsula’s most appealing library stops.
Historical villages and heritage sites
Heritage Village at Big Creek
2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay
Heritage Village at Big Creek includes historic buildings representing Door County life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Programs may include blacksmithing, demonstrations, speakers and hands-on activities. The village is seasonal and requires walking between buildings, so it is best for overcast days or intermittent rain.
Corner of the Past
10310 Fieldcrest Road, Sister Bay
Operated by the Sister Bay Historical Society, Corner of the Past preserves historic buildings and artifacts from northern Door County.
Seasonal programs can include demonstrations, scavenger hunts and family activities. Because visitors move between buildings, it is not ideal during heavy rain.
Ephraim Historical Foundation museums
The Ephraim Historical Foundation operates several small museums around the village. Exhibits explore Ephraim’s Moravian heritage, maritime history, tourism and community life.
Admission policies, tour times and children’s programs vary by season.
The best indoor activities by season
Winter
Sturgeon Bay offers the strongest concentration of reliable winter options:
Door County Maritime Museum
Cherry Lanes Arcade Bar
Apple Valley Lanes
Door County Sandbox
The Gnoshery
Sturgeon Bay Cinema 6
Door County YMCA
Door County Historical Museum
Miller Art Museum
Door County Library
Dancing Bear Toys
Door County Candy
Third Avenue PlayWorks
Renard’s Cheese
Farther north, Sister Bay Bowl, Al Johnson’s, Hands On Art Studio and the Northern Door YMCA provide additional possibilities, but winter hours should always be verified.
Spring and fall
The shoulder seasons add more nature-center programs, art workshops, theater performances, historical attractions and seasonal restaurants. Hours can be irregular, particularly on weekdays.
For fall planning, see our guides to Door County in September and Door County in October.
Summer
Summer unlocks nearly everything in this guide, but rainy days also produce the largest crowds at Hands On Art Studio, the Maritime Museum, bowling alleys and family restaurants.
Reserve activities when possible and keep a backup plan in a different town.
The best rainy-day strategy
Instead of expecting one attraction to fill an entire day, combine several nearby stops.
A few easy combinations:
Sturgeon Bay: Door County Maritime Museum, lunch at The Gnoshery and games at Cherry Lanes
Fish Creek: Hands On Art Studio, shopping downtown and a performance at Northern Sky or Peninsula Players
Sister Bay: Al Johnson’s, Sister Bay Bowl, Door County Creamery and the library
Egg Harbor: Kress Pavilion, Peninsula School of Art and Door County Sandbox on the drive back toward Sturgeon Bay
Sturgeon Bay has the greatest concentration of year-round indoor activities. Families visiting in winter or during a particularly wet forecast will have the most flexibility there. In summer, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, Ephraim and Sister Bay add many more seasonal choices.
The biggest corrections to the original article were the addition of Apple Valley Lanes, the removal of permanently closed Burnt Bluff Stone and Glass, the removal of unverified Door Artisan Cheese visitor experiences, and the elimination of several exact prices and hours that are likely to change.

This guide separates genuinely paved rail trails from Wisconsin’s many crushed-limestone routes, then lays out practical rides, overnight bases, food stops and attractions.
