Fyr Bal Festival 2026: Door County's Summer Solstice Celebration in Ephraim
Once a year, the quietest village in Door County throws the peninsula's biggest party. On Saturday, June 20, 2026, Ephraim hosts the 61st annual Fyr Bal Festival, a daylong celebration of the village's Scandinavian roots that ends with a blazing bonfire and fireworks over Eagle Harbor.
Fyr Bal (pronounced "fear ball") is Norwegian for bonfire. The tradition comes from old Scandinavia, where villages lit fires on Midsummer's Eve to burn away the "winter witch" and welcome the long days of summer. Ephraim has kept the custom alive for six decades, and it remains one of the best free family days you can build a Door County trip around.
If you're driving up from Milwaukee, the North Shore or anywhere in the metro, Ephraim is about a three-hour trip — close enough for an ambitious day trip, better as the anchor of a summer weekend. Here's what to expect in 2026.
When and Where
Fyr Bal runs all day Saturday, June 20, 2026, along the Eagle Harbor waterfront in Ephraim, with activities stretching from Anderson Dock to the Ephraim Village Hall and Harborside Park. The festival is presented by the Ephraim Business Council, and most of the day is free, with small fees for some activities and contests.
The schedule kicks off with sunrise yoga at Anderson Dock at 8 a.m. and a pancake breakfast at Village Hall benefiting the Aaron R. Moore Scholarship, hosted by the Ephraim Yacht Club. From there, the day builds steadily toward the 8:30 p.m. Chieftain Ceremony, bonfire lighting and 9:30 p.m. fireworks.
The Highlights for Families
Fyr Bal Festival
This festival was practically designed for kids. The lawn at Ephraim Shores Resort becomes a children's zone from noon to 3 p.m., with t-shirt and tote bag decorating, balloon animals, face painting, a visit from the Door County Bookmobile and a meet-and-greet with the Norwegian Ice Princess. Children's musician Randy Peterson performs at 1 p.m.
The Fur Bal Pet Showcase is a morning favorite. Costumed dogs (and their people) gather at the Edgewater Resort lawn at 8:30 a.m., then parade down to Village Hall for a 9 a.m. showcase with awards for best dressed, most talented and best in show. Bringing your pup along for the whole trip? Our dog-friendly Door County guide covers 70+ beaches, trails, patios and lodging options that welcome dogs.
Other family-friendly stops throughout the day include wooden shoe carving demonstrations at the Harborside Park gazebo, live raptors from Open Door Bird Sanctuary, flower crown making, a cake walk, medallion crafts in Village Hall and a Kubb tournament — the Scandinavian lawn game Wisconsin has fully adopted — at South Shore Pier.
New for 2026: the Spot Sven scavenger hunt. Pick up a card at the Visitor Center or the Ephraim Business Council tent, find Sven at participating businesses around the village and earn the official 2026 sticker. It's a smart way to keep kids engaged while you browse the shops.
Eat Your Way Through It
The artisan market and food vendors run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. along the waterfront, but the eating contests are the real spectacle. Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor — the red-and-white striped landmark on Highway 42 and a top finisher in our ranking of every Door County ice cream shop — hosts its ice cream eating contest at 10 a.m. The cherry pie eating contest takes the main stage at 3:30 p.m., and you can grab your own cherry pie in a cup at the Ephraim Business Council tent all day. This is Door County. You will eat cherries. Lean into it. (If you're still hungry, we mapped the best desserts on the peninsula from Sturgeon Bay to Washington Island.)
On the Water
For something you can't do at any other Wisconsin festival, sign up for a Viking canoe excursion. Guided paddles along Eagle Harbor run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting, departing from the Firehouse Marina dock. Register at the Ephraim Business Council tent early — spots go fast.
The Evening Finale
The nighttime program is what makes Fyr Bal unforgettable. The grand raffle drawing happens at 8 p.m. on the main stage, followed by Scandinavian dancers and singers at 8:15. At 8:30, the village names its 2026 Fyr Bal Chieftain — an honor given to a community member — and the chieftain lights the bonfire on the shore of Eagle Harbor.
New this year, a Nordic Neon Dance Party with live music takes over the jetty across from Village Hall from 8:45 to 9:30, with glow items for sale nearby. Then the fireworks launch over the harbor at 9:30 p.m. Watching the shells reflect off the water with a bonfire crackling on the beach is one of the great Wisconsin summer moments. Bring blankets and camp chairs and stake out a waterfront spot early in the evening.
Parking and Getting Aroung
Ephraim is small and Fyr Bal is not, so plan your parking. Free shuttles run from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. from two remote lots: the former Shopko parking lot at 2541 S. Bay Shore Dr. in Sister Bay to the north, and the Ephraim-Gibraltar Airport to the south. Take the shuttle. You'll spend less time circling Water Street and more time at the festival, and you won't be stuck in the post-fireworks exodus with a sleeping kid in the back seat.
Make a Weekend of It
Ephraim sits between Fish Creek and Sister Bay on the Green Bay side of the peninsula, directly across from Peninsula State Park — so a Fyr Bal weekend pairs naturally with a hike to Eagle Tower, a morning at Nicolet Beach or a bike ride on the Sunset Trail. (Eagle Trail and other Peninsula State Park favorites made our list of the 10 best hikes in Door County.) Start Sunday with a leisurely meal from our Door County brunch guide — Al Johnson's and its rooftop goats are 10 minutes up the road in Sister Bay.
Book lodging well in advance. Fyr Bal weekend fills the village's inns and cottages early, and nearby Fish Creek, Sister Bay and Baileys Harbor are your best backup options. Our town-by-town guide to where to stay in Door County breaks down hotels, resorts, cabins and campgrounds across the whole peninsula.
