Peach Picking Near Milwaukee 2026: Where to Find Local Peaches
Last updated Aug. 8, 2026
Wisconsin peach season is proving to be a strange one in 2026 — but there are still some genuinely local peaches to track down.
Winter and early-spring weather hit some orchards hard. Apple Holler in Sturtevant lost its 2026 peach crop entirely, while other farms are working with smaller harvests or delayed schedules. At the same time, a new option has emerged close to home: Barthel Fruit Farm in Mequon is harvesting peaches from an experimental greenhouse orchard and selling them at the Richfield Farmers Market for two Saturdays in August.
For Milwaukee-area families, that means this is less of a traditional U-pick season and more of a follow-the-farms-and-go-when-the-peaches-appear season.

The best peach options right now
As of Aug. 8, the two closest opportunities for North Shore families are both connected to Mequon farms.
Gierach Orchards has a limited batch of pre-picked peaches at its Sales Barn in Mequon on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The farm says additional early-season peaches are limited, with a broader daily opening planned for late August.
Barthel Fruit Farm is selling its homegrown Redhaven and Saturn peaches at the Richfield Farmers Market on Saturday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. These will not be available for picking at Barthel's farm. (Gierach Orchards)
Later in the month, Creek Bed Farmacy in Poynette is another one to watch. Its official calendar currently lists peach season for late August through early September, weather permitting, with both U-pick and pre-picked fruit part of its seasonal offerings. (Creek Bed Farmacy)
Barthel Fruit Farm — Mequon
Farm: 12246 N. Farmdale Road, Mequon
Peach sales: Richfield Nature and Historical Park, 1898 WI-164, Richfield
Peach dates: Saturday, Aug. 8 and Saturday, Aug. 15, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
One of the most interesting peach stories in southeastern Wisconsin is happening practically in our backyard.
Barthel Fruit Farm planted its first peach trees in 2023 as part of an experiment designed to solve one of the fundamental problems with growing peaches in Wisconsin: winters and late frosts can be brutal on peach trees and blossoms.
Their solution? Put the orchard inside a greenhouse.
Barthel calls it the Bigfoot Peach House, and the setup is considerably more sophisticated than simply putting a few trees under glass. The greenhouse contains 56 peach trees — 50 Redhaven and six Saturn "donut" peach trees.
Bigfoot Peach House
Because space is limited, the trees are trained using a system called Upright Fruiting Offshoots, or UFO. Trees were planted at roughly a 45-degree angle and trained along a trellis, with upright shoots eventually creating what amounts to a wall of fruit.
The experiment is now producing peaches.
Barthel says its trees are still young, so the farm intentionally allowed them to carry only about half of a potential crop this year to avoid putting too much stress on them. That means there isn't enough fruit to open the farm for peach sales or U-pick.
Instead, Barthel's 2026 peaches will be sold only at the Richfield Farmers Market on Aug. 8 and Aug. 15, in quart and quarter-peck quantities.
You'll find two varieties:
Redhaven: A classic yellow-fleshed peach that's juicy, sweet and well suited to eating fresh, baking and preserving.
Saturn: Sometimes called a donut peach, this distinctive flattened variety has white flesh, low acidity and a particularly sweet flavor.
The Richfield Farmers Market operates most Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 10 at Richfield Nature and Historical Park. The market's official address is 1898 WI-164, Richfield. (Richfield Farmers Market)
Barthel expects to have a larger peach crop in 2027 if the trees continue developing as planned.

And save another date: Barthel's 2026 Oktoberfest is scheduled for Sept. 19–20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with apples, live polka music, brats, beer, warm pretzels, bakery items and more. Admission is free. The farm says its apple harvest typically begins in early September.
Gierach Orchards — Mequon
Address: 9616 W. Bonniwell Road, Mequon
Phone: 262-236-5506
Gierach Orchards remains the closest traditional peach orchard for most North Shore families, but 2026 is not shaping up as a normal pick-your-own season.
The big update: Gierach's Sales Barn is open Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with limited pre-picked peaches, along with pasture-raised meats and other farm products.
After that, availability gets more sporadic. Gierach says early-season peaches are very limited and recommends watching its Facebook updates for additional availability. The orchard currently expects to open daily in late August with pre-picked peaches, apples, pasture-raised meats and other orchard products. (Gierach Orchards)
The roadside farm stand remains open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., currently carrying seasonal items such as eggs and maple syrup. The stand is self-service and accepts exact cash, Venmo and personal checks. (Gierach Orchards)
Gierach's more than 30-acre property grows apples, peaches, pears, strawberries, garlic and flowers, along with raising working farm animals. Just don't sell the kids on a petting zoo before you arrive — the farm specifically notes that its animals are working animals and aren't available for petting. (Gierach Orchards)

Creek Bed Farmacy — Poynette
Address: N2767 Mountford Road, Poynette
Phone: 608-635-8798
If you specifically want the possibility of U-pick peaches, Creek Bed Farmacy may be the one to watch as August progresses.
The Poynette farm, about 30 minutes north of Madison, currently lists peaches for August and September, with its official peach-picking window estimated for late August through early September, weather permitting.
Creek Bed says both U-pick and pre-picked produce are offered seasonally, although exact peach availability hasn't yet been announced. Check directly with the farm before making the drive. (Creek Bed Farmacy)
The Schoeneberg family's farm dates to 1871 and eventually shifts into a much larger fall agritourism operation, including its corn maze, Back 40 Play Yard, pumpkins, hayrides, animals and concessions. The corn maze and major fall activities generally begin later in September, so don't expect the full fall experience during an August peach run. (Creek Bed Farmacy)
Apple Holler — No peaches in 2026
Address: 5006 S. Sylvania Ave., Sturtevant
This is an important change: Apple Holler has officially announced that there will be no peach-picking season in 2026.
According to the orchard, late-winter and early-spring frosts severely damaged the developing peach crop. Apple Holler says peach picking is expected to return in 2027. (Apple Holler)
Apple Holler is still open for its other orchard experiences and begins transitioning into apple season in August, but we would not make the drive specifically for peaches this year.
Tips for buying and picking peaches
One correction from the earlier version of this guide: peaches can continue to ripen after they're picked.
Peaches are climacteric fruit, meaning mature peaches continue to soften and ripen after harvest. What they don't do is gain more sugar once they're off the tree, so a peach picked while still very green won't suddenly develop the sweetness of one allowed to mature properly on the tree. (University of Minnesota Extension)
Look for peaches with a creamy or golden background color rather than green skin. A ripe peach should have a noticeable peach aroma and give slightly when gently pressed near the stem. Don't squeeze the sides repeatedly — peaches bruise easily.
If your peaches are mature but still firm, leave them at room temperature for a day or two. A paper bag can help speed the process. Once ripe, move them to the refrigerator if you aren't eating them immediately. (Penn State Extension)
And especially in 2026, check a farm's website or social media the same day you plan to visit. Peach availability can disappear quickly.
Make it a full Wisconsin summer day
If you're heading to Richfield for Barthel's peaches, take some time to wander the farmers market rather than treating it as a quick pickup. The market runs through Oct. 10 and brings together local produce growers, food producers, artists and other vendors. (Richfield Farmers Market)
A Gierach trip can easily be combined with another Mequon outing, while Creek Bed Farmacy makes more sense as part of a Madison-area day trip.

The bottom line
The 2026 Milwaukee-area peach season isn't a wash — it's just unusually fragmented.
For peaches right now: Gierach Orchards has limited pre-picked peaches in Mequon, while Barthel Fruit Farm is bringing its greenhouse-grown Redhaven and Saturn peaches to the Richfield Farmers Market Aug. 8 and 15.
For later in August: Keep watching Gierach for its larger late-August opening and Creek Bed Farmacy for the start of its late-August/early-September peach season.
For U-pick: Creek Bed currently looks like the strongest remaining possibility this year. Apple Holler has canceled its peach season entirely.
With local supplies limited, this is definitely the year to check before you drive — and when you see a Wisconsin farm announce that peaches are ready, don't wait too long.
One additional editorial change I strongly recommend: change the headline from “Peach Picking Guide to Milwaukee 2026” to “Peach Picking Near Milwaukee 2026: Where to Find Local Peaches.” It keeps the important “peach picking” SEO phrase without promising U-pick at places where visitors can only buy pre-picked fruit this year.
