ArtBlaze 2026: Free Family Fun at McKinley Beach

FuzzPop Workshop’s giant inflatables on the beach were a highlight of ArtBlaze

Looking for one more memorable summer night by Lake Michigan? ArtBlaze returns to McKinley Beach on Thursday, August 20, 2026, for an evening of giant inflatable art, live music, dance, yoga, hands-on activities and lakeside fun — all completely free.

Presented by Joy Engine, ArtBlaze is now in its third season and has expanded beyond McKinley Beach this year with three events split between McKinley and South Shore Park.

The first two ArtBlaze events of 2026 took place July 30 at McKinley Beach and August 6 at South Shore Park. Families still have one more chance to experience it this summer.

What's New at ArtBlaze in 2026

One of ArtBlaze's signatures is its enormous inflatable artwork.

FuzzPop Workshop returns in 2026 with another large-scale installation created in collaboration with students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture & Urban Planning.

The collaboration has produced a new installation called Archaea, continuing ArtBlaze's tradition of putting larger-than-life interactive artwork directly into Milwaukee's public spaces.

Families can expect much more than something to look at. ArtBlaze combines the installation with interactive art, local artists and vendors, live performances, dance, movement activities and bonfire s'mores.

August 20 ArtBlaze Lineup at McKinley Beach

The final ArtBlaze of the summer takes place Thursday, August 20 from 4 to 9 p.m. at McKinley Beach.

Here's the entertainment schedule:

• 4 p.m. — Barefoot Mike

• 5 p.m. — MKE Yoga Social

• 6 p.m. — The Quilz

• 7 p.m. — Xalaat Africa Drum & Dance

• 8 p.m. — Fuzzysurf

That mix makes the evening especially family-friendly. You can arrive early for music and yoga, stay for the interactive art and activities, and finish the night with African drum and dance followed by surf-inspired music along Lake Michigan.

What Families Can Expect

ArtBlaze isn't structured like a traditional festival where you need to follow a strict itinerary. It's designed to be explored.

Families can wander between the art installation, performances and activities or simply spread out a blanket and enjoy the lakefront.

Activities throughout the 2026 series include:

• Interactive, all-ages art experiences

• Live music

• Dance and movement performances

• Local artists and vendors

• Food vendors

• Bonfires and waterside s'mores

• Activities designed for both kids and adults

The result feels somewhere between an outdoor concert, community art project and beach party.

Accessibility at ArtBlaze

One particularly family-friendly feature is ArtBlaze's focus on making the beach experience more accessible.

Through a partnership with The Ability Center, ArtBlaze provides mobility mats and beach wheelchairs at its beach events so visitors with mobility challenges can better access the sand and experience the inflatable artwork.

It's an important addition for an event that deliberately uses Milwaukee's beaches as part of the experience.

The South Shore edition was held in the park adjacent to the beach rather than directly on the sand. South Shore Beach itself reopened in late 2025 following a major redevelopment, while McKinley Beach reopened in 2024 after a nearly four-year closure and safety-focused redesign.

Tips for Families

Bring a blanket or beach chairs. There is plenty happening, but part of the appeal is simply hanging out along the lake.

Plan to stay until evening. The setting becomes especially fun as the sun starts going down and the inflatable artwork takes on a different feel.

Bring layers. Even on a hot August day, temperatures right along Lake Michigan can drop quickly after sunset.

Come hungry — or pack snacks. Food vendors are part of the event, and s'mores are one of the ArtBlaze traditions.

Let the kids explore. This isn't a "don't touch the art" experience. ArtBlaze is intentionally built around interaction, movement and participation.

Make It a Lakefront Evening

McKinley Beach's location makes ArtBlaze easy to combine with other Milwaukee lakefront activities. Families can visit the beach, walk along Lincoln Memorial Drive or explore nearby Lake Park before heading to ArtBlaze.

Why ArtBlaze Is Worth Checking Out

ArtBlaze has quickly become one of Milwaukee's more unusual free summer events.

More than 5,000 people attended the 2025 ArtBlaze events, which featured more than 65 musicians, performers and artists. For 2026, Joy Engine is continuing the same formula while expanding the event to another part of Milwaukee's lakefront.

For North Shore families, the final McKinley Beach event is particularly convenient: it's free, you don't need tickets or a full-day commitment, and kids get to experience large-scale public art in a setting where they're actually encouraged to interact with what's around them.
