Planning a Door County road trip in an electric vehicle is entirely manageable, but it requires a little more preparation than a trip to a larger city.
Door County has a growing network of public and hotel-based Level 2 chargers, along with a Tesla Supercharger in Sturgeon Bay. What it does not have is a large selection of high-speed charging stations throughout the northern peninsula.
That means the best approach is usually to arrive with a strong charge, use Sturgeon Bay as your fast-charging hub and, whenever possible, stay somewhere that allows you to charge overnight.
We have traveled to Door County in our Rivian, and overnight charging at our lodging was the single most useful part of our plan. Instead of setting aside vacation time for charging, we plugged in after dinner and started each morning with plenty of range.

Can You Visit Door County in an Electric Vehicle?
Yes. Most modern electric vehicles can comfortably handle a Door County vacation, particularly when the trip includes overnight charging.
The challenge is not usually the amount of driving within Door County. The challenge is that most chargers north of Sturgeon Bay are Level 2 chargers rather than DC fast chargers.
Level 2 charging works well when you are parked for several hours at a hotel, restaurant, theater, museum or downtown shopping area. It is less helpful when you need to add a large amount of range quickly.
Before your trip, check recent driver reports in PlugShare and verify each charger in your vehicle’s navigation system or charging app. Charger access, pricing and availability can change, and some stations are limited to hotel guests or customers.

For anyone staying in Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay or Gills Rock, this is the most logical place to add a substantial charge before continuing north.

What About Charging on Washington Island?
Public EV charging on Washington Island is extremely limited. Drivers should not assume they will be able to recharge after taking the ferry.
The safest strategy is to charge before driving to the ferry terminal, arrive on the island with more range than you expect to need and check current charging apps before departure.
Although the island itself is not very large, ferry waits, detours and additional driving can add to your energy use.

The Best EV Charging Strategy for a Door County Vacation
For most visitors, the easiest plan looks like this:
Leave home with a full or nearly full battery.
Use Green Bay, Manitowoc or another fast-charging location along your route if you need additional range before entering Door County.
Use the Tesla Supercharger in Sturgeon Bay if your vehicle is compatible and you need a substantial charge.
Book a hotel, resort, campground or vacation rental with overnight charging.
Use public Level 2 chargers while eating, shopping, hiking or visiting attractions.
Avoid waiting until your battery is low before looking for a charger north of Sturgeon Bay.
This approach allows charging to happen in the background rather than becoming the focus of the trip.
Finding Door County Lodging With an EV Charger
Overnight charging is the most convenient option for most Door County visitors.
When searching hotel websites, Airbnb or Vrbo, look for terms such as:

Do not rely solely on a filter. Contact the property and ask whether the charger is operational, whether it must be reserved, whether there is a fee and whether non-Tesla vehicles need an adapter.

PlugShare is one of the most useful tools for a Door County EV trip because it includes recent driver check-ins, photos and information about broken or occupied chargers.
The Tesla charging map is essential for checking current Supercharger access and non-Tesla compatibility.
ChargePoint can help locate and activate chargers on the ChargePoint network.
Google Maps can also display nearby charging stations, although recent driver reports in PlugShare are often more helpful for confirming whether a charger is working.
Destination Door County maintains an official directory of EV charging stations. Its current page includes addresses, connector types and access details, but the directory itself notes that its station list was last updated in January 2024. Use it as a starting point and confirm every important stop before traveling.
Tips for Driving an EV in Door County
Bring any adapters and mobile charging cables your vehicle may require.
Do not assume every Tesla destination charger is open to non-guests or non-Tesla vehicles.
Remember that a NEMA 14-50 outlet requires your own compatible mobile charging equipment.
Have at least one backup charging location in mind.
Expect slower charging at Level 2 stations.
Build charging into activities you already plan to do.
Allow additional range during cold weather, heavy rain, strong winds or when carrying bikes and rooftop equipment.

Is Door County EV-Friendly?

Sturgeon Bay provides the most important high-speed charging option. Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay and Baileys Harbor have a useful collection of Level 2 and lodging-based chargers. The northern peninsula and Washington Island require more planning.
The best solution is still to arrive with a strong charge and stay somewhere with overnight charging.
With that strategy, an electric vehicle works extremely well for exploring Door County’s villages, beaches, parks, restaurants and scenic roads.
