Best Door County Cabins, Cottages & Family Stays: A Town-by-Town Guide

Door County stretches like a crooked finger between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, creating more than 300 miles of shoreline dotted with beaches, limestone bluffs, cherry orchards, historic communities and some of Wisconsin’s most memorable cabins, cottages and family resorts.

Whether you’re a Door County regular or planning your family’s first trip to the peninsula, choosing where to stay can shape the entire vacation. A cabin near Fish Creek puts Peninsula State Park practically in your backyard. A Lake Michigan cottage in Jacksonport gives you quieter mornings and sunrise views. Sister Bay puts restaurants, beaches and activity within easy reach, while Washington Island feels like a vacation within your vacation.

This guide is organized geographically so you can compare family-friendly cottages, waterfront cabins, resorts, large-group rentals, rustic retreats and pet-friendly options from Sturgeon Bay all the way to Washington Island.

Sturgeon Bay

Sturgeon Bay is Door County’s largest year-round community and gives families the widest range of restaurants, shopping, attractions and lodging.

For first-time visitors who want to explore both sides of the peninsula, it’s also a practical home base.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park of Door County at 3677 May Road combines cabin stays with the classic family-campground experience.

Families get the fun of camping while still being able to choose furnished cabins rather than tents or RVs. Pools, miniature golf, playgrounds and organized activities give kids plenty to do without leaving the property.

It’s especially appealing for younger families who consider the campground part of the vacation rather than simply a place to sleep.

Chanticleer Cabins

For something much quieter, Chanticleer Cabins offers four refined log cabins surrounded by woods near Sturgeon Bay.

Full kitchens and comfortable living spaces make these feel more like private retreats than traditional hotel rooms, and homemade breakfast delivered to the cabins adds a memorable Door County touch.

These lean more toward peaceful getaways than activity-heavy family vacations, but they can work beautifully for families with older kids.

Andropolis Waterfront Cottages

Andropolis Waterfront Cottages provides a traditional Door County cottage experience along the Sturgeon Bay waterfront north of downtown.

The small property is a good fit for travelers who want a kitchen, lawn space and waterfront surroundings without staying at a large resort.

NSFA Expedia Pick: Bridgeport Waterfront Resort

Bridgeport Waterfront Resort is a particularly strong option for families who want Sturgeon Bay convenience without giving up resort amenities.

The waterfront property is close to downtown and currently offers an indoor heated pool and whirlpool, a children’s splash area with zero-depth entry and interactive water features, and a seasonal outdoor pool. Full condominium units include kitchens, making longer family stays easier.

For younger kids, that indoor splash area is a major advantage on rainy or cool Door County days.

More Sturgeon Bay Vacation Rentals

Sturgeon Bay also has one of the county’s deepest inventories of stand-alone vacation homes.

JR Vacation Rentals and Rent Door County are useful starting points when you need multiple bedrooms, a pet-friendly rental or a waterfront house.

Jacksonport and the Lake Michigan Shore

Jacksonport sits along Door County’s quieter Lake Michigan side.

Instead of a busy downtown, the appeal here is open shoreline, beaches, rural scenery and easy access to places like Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park.

Square Rigger Lodge

Square Rigger Lodge is one of Jacksonport’s signature Lake Michigan properties.

Its waterfront cottages are especially attractive for families because the property includes sandy shoreline — something worth noting in a county where many waterfront properties have rock rather than sand.

The cottages also give families kitchen space, grills and room to settle in for a longer stay.

Olson Cottages

Olson Cottages is about as classic as a Door County cottage vacation gets.

Four vintage cottages sit along a private Lake Michigan beach between Jacksonport and Baileys Harbor. The family-owned property has welcomed vacationers for generations.

If your ideal Door County day involves kids wandering the beach, reading on the deck and ending the evening around a fire rather than heading into town, this is exactly that kind of place.

Door County Premium Rentals

Door County Premium Rentals manages a collection of Lake Michigan homes in the Jacksonport and Glidden Drive area, including options near Cave Point.

This is a useful place to search when you need more bedrooms than a traditional cottage provides.

All About the Lakeshore Cottages

All About the Lakeshore Door County Cottages offers a more traditional cottage experience along Lake Michigan.

These work particularly well for travelers looking for a quieter setting and the sort of old-school Door County vacation built around water, fires and unhurried mornings.

Southern Door County: Brussels and Forestville

Families heading straight for Fish Creek and Sister Bay often drive through southern Door County without considering it as a place to stay.

That can be a mistake if what you really want is privacy.

Southern Door County trades walkable tourist villages for farmland, woods, historic churches and a distinctly different pace.

The Brussels area is also at the heart of Door County’s Belgian heritage. The Belgian Heritage Center is worth adding to an itinerary if you’re staying in this part of the county.

Door County KOA Holiday

Door County KOA Holiday combines campground cabins with swimming, recreation and traditional camping.

For families trying to balance kids who want campground activities with parents who would prefer actual beds, bathrooms and kitchen facilities, deluxe cabins can be a useful compromise.

Private vacation homes scattered through Forestville and Brussels are another option if your priority is acreage, seclusion or room for a dog to roam.

Egg Harbor

Egg Harbor is one of the easiest places to recommend to first-time Door County families.

Its central location puts Fish Creek, Peninsula State Park, Baileys Harbor and Sister Bay within easy reach while still giving you a beach, marina, restaurants and village atmosphere close to home.

NSFA Expedia Pick: The Landing Resort

The Landing Resort combines a wooded setting with a location that makes it easy to experience Egg Harbor without constantly getting back in the car.

Every unit currently includes either a kitchenette or full kitchen, and the resort is within walking distance of shops, restaurants, breweries, the market, beach and harbor.

That combination makes The Landing particularly appealing for families who want to make breakfast or snacks in the room while still having Egg Harbor outside the door.

NSFA Expedia Pick: Newport Resort

Newport Resort may be one of the best all-around family resort choices in Egg Harbor.

Its one- and two-bedroom suites include full kitchens, living rooms and private balconies. Current resort amenities include indoor and outdoor heated saltwater pools, an indoor hot tub, outdoor children’s play areas, an indoor play area, a retro arcade, grilling pavilion and outdoor fire tables.

Having separate living and sleeping space plus a real kitchen can make a substantial difference when you’re traveling with kids for more than a night or two.

Door County Cottages

Door County Cottages offers six secluded cottages near Egg Harbor.

Amenities vary among the cottages but include features such as fireplaces, kitchens, whirlpool tubs, decks, fire pits and saunas.

It’s also worth checking if you’re traveling with a dog. See our pet-friendly Door County guide for more options.

Loma Cottages

Loma Cottages brings a much more modern style to the Door County cottage experience.

Six private cottages sit on 10 acres between Egg Harbor, Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor.

Shared recreation — including pickleball, putting, saunas, walking areas and outdoor gathering spaces — makes Loma particularly interesting for extended families or groups who want private accommodations while still vacationing together.

The Shallows Resort

The Shallows Resort has been a Door County family destination for generations.

Its Green Bay setting gives families waterfront access and those western-facing Door County sunsets, while the resort format provides more on-site recreation than a stand-alone cabin.

Fish Creek

Fish Creek may be the easiest Door County community for families who want to spend as little time as possible in the car.

Downtown restaurants and shops cluster tightly together, and Peninsula State Park begins almost immediately outside the village.

For more ideas, use our Door County with Kids guide to build the rest of your itinerary.

NSFA Expedia Pick: Homestead Suites

Homestead Suites gives families more choices than a typical hotel.

Accommodations include hotel rooms, furnished suites, condos and larger guest houses. Current property amenities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and some of the larger vacation-home options include full kitchens.

Its Fish Creek location is another advantage: you’re close to Peninsula State Park while keeping downtown Fish Creek within easy reach.

Check rates and availability →

NSFA Expedia Pick: Parkwood Lodge - Door County

Parkwood Lodge - Door County is a particularly good match for families who like having things to do back at the hotel after a day of exploring.

Current amenities include a heated indoor pool, whirlpool, game room, pool table, sports courts for pickleball, basketball and tennis, a bonfire area and children’s playground. Family suites and kitchen-equipped accommodations are also available. Parkwood currently does not allow pets.

It’s located along Highway 42 between Fish Creek and Ephraim, with Peninsula State Park nearby.

Fish Creek Inn & Cottages

Fish Creek Inn & Cottages offers cottage accommodations near downtown.

The biggest selling point may simply be location: staying close enough to walk for dinner or ice cream changes the rhythm of a Fish Creek vacation.

Large Vacation Homes

Fish Creek is also one of the peninsula’s strongest areas for private vacation homes.

Simple Life Rentals and JR Vacation Rentals manage homes throughout the Fish Creek and Gibraltar area.

For multiple families traveling together, prioritize kitchens, laundry, bathrooms and outdoor gathering space rather than simply looking for the highest possible bed count.

Baileys Harbor and Kangaroo Lake

Baileys Harbor gives families a very different Door County experience from the Green Bay villages.

The area puts you close to Lake Michigan, the Ridges Sanctuary, Cana Island Lighthouse, Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park.

Just inland, Kangaroo Lake adds another category entirely: inland-lake cabins where swimming, paddling, fishing and dock time can become the centerpiece of the trip.

Kangaroo Lake Cabins

Numerous cabins and cottages ring Kangaroo Lake, from traditional family cottages to larger reunion homes.

If your kids would rather jump off a dock than walk to an ice cream shop, this area deserves a close look.

Before booking a waterfront rental, verify the things that aren't always obvious in photos: water depth, swimming access, dock availability, boat rules and whether the shoreline is sand, rock or vegetation.

East Shorewood Cottages

East Shorewood Cottages offers traditional Kangaroo Lake cottages with the old-school feel many families picture when they imagine a Wisconsin lake vacation.

Baileys on the Rocks

Baileys on the Rocks gives travelers another option near Lake Michigan and downtown Baileys Harbor.

This can be a good compromise if you want cottage atmosphere without being isolated from restaurants and village activities.

Ephraim

Ephraim is one of Door County’s most picturesque places to stay.

White historic buildings, Eagle Harbor, shoreline sunsets and Peninsula State Park just down the road make it feel distinctly different from neighboring Fish Creek and Sister Bay.

And despite a bit of outdated Door County lore that still floats around online, Ephraim is no longer a dry village.

NSFA Expedia Pick: Eagle Harbor Inn

Eagle Harbor Inn combines historic Ephraim atmosphere with resort-style amenities.

The property offers inn rooms, one- and two-bedroom whirlpool suites and a four-bedroom residence. Family-friendly amenities currently include an indoor current pool with toys, while the property also has a dry sauna, fitness room, outdoor seating and grills. Ephraim Beach is nearby.

This is a particularly appealing choice when you want Ephraim’s quieter village atmosphere but still want an indoor pool in case Door County weather doesn't cooperate.

Pioneer Acres Cottages

Pioneer Acres Cottages offers one-, two- and three-bedroom cottages in a quiet wooded setting near the village.

Fireplaces and full kitchens give these much more of a North Woods cabin feel than a traditional Ephraim hotel.

Northwind Cottages

Ephraim Vacation Homes operates Northwind cottages and other rentals in the area.

The rustic cottages are particularly useful for families who want their own kitchen and living space while remaining close enough to enjoy Ephraim’s waterfront and village.

Multiple cottages can also work well for extended-family trips where everyone wants some separation.

Sister Bay

If your family wants activity, Sister Bay is difficult to beat.

The village combines a public beach and waterfront with restaurants, shopping, marina activity, live events and the famous goats on the roof at Al Johnson’s.

It's an especially good base for families with older kids who like being able to walk around town on their own.

NSFA Expedia Pick: Open Hearth Lodge

Open Hearth Lodge is one of the more deliberately family-oriented hotel choices near Sister Bay.

A stay currently includes breakfast, and the lodge has a heated indoor pool, whirlpool, large lawn, playground, outdoor games, patio and fire pit. Select rooms are dog-friendly, although travelers bringing a pet need to reserve an eligible room and follow the property's pet policy.

The large outdoor space is a nice contrast to lodging right in the middle of a busy village.

Large Sister Bay Vacation Homes

Sister Bay has also become one of Door County’s strongest markets for large vacation homes.

Rent Door County, Simple Life Rentals and other local managers offer everything from smaller cottages to multi-family houses.

For large groups, Sister Bay’s biggest advantage is convenience: once you get into town, restaurants, waterfront activities and entertainment are concentrated fairly close together.

Ellison Bay and Northern Door

North of Sister Bay, Door County begins to feel noticeably wilder.

Ellison Bay gives families access to the Mink River area, Door Bluff Headlands and Newport State Park while still keeping Sister Bay within a reasonable drive.

This part of Door County is best for families who value privacy, hiking, paddling and quiet evenings more than walking to shops.

Rowleys Bay Area

The Rowleys Bay area has a mix of waterfront cabins, resorts and vacation homes.

DC Cabin Collective is worth exploring for design-forward cabin options, including dog-friendly waterfront stays.

Bayview Resort & Harbor

Bayview Resort & Harbor is another option for travelers who want the water — and particularly boating and fishing — to be central to the trip.

Gills Rock

At the northern end of the mainland peninsula, Gills Rock feels worlds away from the busy stretch between Egg Harbor and Sister Bay.

It’s a strong choice for travelers who prioritize seclusion, bluff views, fishing and easy access to the Washington Island ferry.

On The Rocks Cliffside Lodge

On The Rocks Cliffside Lodge is designed more for groups than for a traditional small-family cabin trip.

The setting near the northern tip of the peninsula is the real attraction: this is where Door County starts to feel genuinely remote.

DC Cabin Collective

DC Cabin Collective also operates properties in this northern stretch, including waterfront options near Death’s Door.

Terra Cottages

Terra Cottages offers another traditional Door County cottage experience near Gills Rock and the ferry route north.

Washington Island

Taking the ferry to Washington Island changes the character of a Door County trip immediately.

Instead of treating the island as a day trip, spending a night or two lets families experience it after much of the daytime ferry traffic has disappeared.

See our complete Washington Island family guide before planning the trip.

Gibson’s West Harbor Resort

Gibson’s West Harbor Resort is one of the island’s classic family lodging options.

Cottages, outdoor space and access to the harbor create the sort of slow-paced island experience that works especially well when the goal isn't to rush between attractions.

Washington Island Campground Cabins

Washington Island Campground offers one of the island’s most approachable cabin experiences for families.

Instead of paying for amenities you may not use, you get a campground environment where swimming, mini golf, playground time and hanging around outside are part of the appeal.

Cabin types range from more rustic options to units with additional comforts, so check exactly what is included before packing.

Sunrise Log Cabins

For travelers who want the island version of a private cabin experience, Sunrise Log Cabins offers a quieter alternative near Lake Michigan.

Four Elements Lodging

Four Elements Lodging is beautifully designed but deserves an important qualification in a family guide: it is intended for adults rather than families with children.

Keep it on the list for a couples getaway, but look elsewhere for a traditional family trip.

Door County Vacation Rental Companies

If you care more about finding the right house than staying at a particular resort, Door County’s local vacation-rental managers can make searching much easier.

Rent Door County

Rent Door County manages vacation homes throughout much of the peninsula.

Filters for waterfront properties, pets and other features make it particularly useful when you're planning a larger family trip.

JR Vacation Rentals

JR Vacation Rentals has an extensive portfolio covering many Door County communities.

Simple Life Rentals

Simple Life Rentals manages everything from small cottages to large waterfront vacation homes and maintains a particularly useful selection for travelers with pets.

DC Cabin Collective

DC Cabin Collective focuses on a smaller collection of design-forward Door County cabins and waterfront stays.

DoCo Vacations

DoCo Vacations is another locally focused source for professionally managed vacation homes.

When to Book a Door County Cabin

Summer: June Through August

Summer is Door County’s busiest lodging season.

It's also when you have the widest selection of open attractions, boating, outdoor dining, concerts and family activities.

If you're trying to stay directly on the water or need a very specific setup — five bedrooms, dog-friendly, sandy beach, private dock, for example — start looking early.

If cherries are part of the trip, use our 2026 Door County Cherry Picking Guide before choosing your dates.

September and October

Fall may be our favorite time for a Door County cabin trip.

Days are cooler, fireplaces and fire pits finally make sense again, and the peninsula transitions from summer vacation mode into fall-color season.

The tradeoff is that October weekends can be every bit as competitive as summer, especially around peak foliage.

Winter

A cabin can also completely change the way you experience Door County in winter.

Instead of trying to fill every hour with attractions, winter trips tend to revolve around hiking or snowshoeing, meals, coffee shops and long evenings back at the cabin.

Just verify that an individual property is actually winterized and open year-round before building the rest of your itinerary around it.

How to Choose the Best Door County Town for Your Family

There is no single best place to stay. The right answer depends on the trip you’re trying to create.

For first-time visitors: Egg Harbor or Sturgeon Bay makes exploring a large part of the peninsula straightforward.

For Peninsula State Park: Fish Creek is difficult to beat.

For walkable restaurants and beach time: Sister Bay is one of the strongest choices.

For a quieter Lake Michigan vacation: Look at Jacksonport and Baileys Harbor.

For swimming, paddling and fishing from an inland-lake cabin: Search around Kangaroo Lake.

For seclusion: Start looking around Ellison Bay and northern Door County.

For a complete escape: Take the ferry and spend a few nights on Washington Island.

Families planning a broader trip can also use our complete Door County guide and our Door County family adventures guide to plan what to do once you've picked your home base.

A Few Things to Verify Before You Book

Photos rarely tell the whole story.

Before paying a deposit, check the things that actually affect a family trip:

  • Whether the property has air conditioning

  • Whether linens and towels are included

  • Whether bedrooms require climbing stairs

  • Whether the waterfront is actually swimmable

  • Whether a dock is seasonal

  • Whether pets are allowed and what restrictions apply

  • Whether the kitchen has a full oven or simply a kitchenette

  • Whether laundry is available

  • Minimum-stay requirements

  • Cancellation policies

  • Parking limits for larger groups

Those details can change even when the cabin itself hasn't.

Door County has everything from rustic campground cabins and century-old cottages to waterfront reunion homes and family resorts with pools and play areas.

The trick isn't finding somewhere beautiful to stay.

It's figuring out which version of Door County your family wants to wake up to.
