Sturgeon Bay
As Door County's only incorporated city and largest year-round community, Sturgeon Bay offers the broadest selection of restaurants, shopping, services and lodging. It's a particularly good choice for first-time visitors who want to explore both the Lake Michigan and Green Bay sides of the peninsula without committing to the busier northern villages.
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park of Door County at 3677 May Road combines cabins and camping with a full slate of kid-focused resort activities.
The property offers furnished cabin rentals in addition to RV and tent sites. Families also have access to two heated pools, a kiddie pool, miniature golf, playgrounds, basketball, soccer, arts and crafts, a theater and scheduled activities. It's one of the better choices for families who like the idea of camping but want more amenities than a traditional campsite.
The Sturgeon Bay location also has some history behind it: it was the original Jellystone Park campground.
Call (920) 743-9001 or check the website for current cabin availability and 2026 reservation requirements.
Chanticleer Cabins
For something quieter and more upscale, Chanticleer Cabins at 4017 Cherry Road offers four log cabins: Tamarack, Hemlock, Evergreen and Oak.
The cabins combine rustic architecture with full kitchens, comfortable living spaces and spacious bathrooms. Hiking trails, complimentary bicycles and winter snowshoeing add outdoor appeal.
The standout perk is one you won't find at many Door County cabin properties: homemade breakfast is delivered directly to the cabins each morning, along with freshly baked chocolate-chip cookies.
These lean more toward couples and relaxing getaways than activity-heavy family vacations, but they can work well for families looking for a peaceful home base.
Andropolis Waterfront Cottages
Andropolis Waterfront Cottages provides a more traditional Door County cottage experience along the Sturgeon Bay waterfront, north of downtown.
The small property is a good fit for travelers who want a kitchen, lawn space and waterfront surroundings without staying at a large resort.
Vacation Rentals Around Sturgeon Bay
Sturgeon Bay also has one of the county's deepest inventories of stand-alone vacation homes.
JR Vacation Rentals and Rent Door County are useful starting points for waterfront homes, pet-friendly rentals and larger properties.

Jacksonport and the Lake Michigan Shore
Jacksonport sits along what many visitors call Door County's quieter side. Instead of a busy downtown, the appeal is Lake Michigan, beaches, rural scenery and quick access to Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park.
Square Rigger Lodge
Square Rigger Lodge at 6332 Highway 57 is one of Jacksonport's signature waterfront properties.
The resort sits on 286 feet of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline and offers five waterfront cottages in addition to lodge accommodations. Each cottage has a kitchen, full-size refrigerator, cookware, microwave, outdoor grill, Wi-Fi and television, with units sleeping between two and six guests.
The sandy beach is a major selling point for families because much of Door County's shoreline is rocky.
During peak periods, cottages commonly require longer stays, so this is one to reserve early.
Olson Cottages
Olson Cottages is about as classic as Door County lodging gets.
Four vintage cottages sit directly along a private Lake Michigan sand beach between Jacksonport and Baileys Harbor. The family-owned property has been welcoming vacationers for more than 80 years.
For 2026, Olson Cottages is open May 30 through October 19, with weekly Saturday-to-Saturday rentals during its primary season.
If your ideal Door County vacation involves kids playing along the beach, reading on a deck and ending the evening around a fire instead of heading into town, this is exactly that kind of place.
Southern Door County: Brussels and Forestville
Southern Door County is often overlooked by visitors racing north toward Egg Harbor and Fish Creek, but families looking for seclusion may want to slow down here.
The Brussels area is also at the heart of an important part of Door County history. The surrounding countryside contains the largest Walloon Belgian settlement in the United States, and the Belgian Heritage Center preserves that story through historic buildings, artifacts and exhibits.
Vacation rentals dominate here rather than traditional resorts.
Door County KOA Holiday
Door County KOA Holiday combines campground cabins with pools, family recreation and traditional camping.
For families trying to balance kids who want campground activities with parents who would prefer actual beds, bathrooms and kitchen facilities, deluxe cabins can be a useful compromise.
Egg Harbor: Central Peninsula Charm
Loma Cottages
Egg Harbor is one of our favorite locations for families who want a central Door County home base. Fish Creek, Peninsula State Park, Baileys Harbor and Sister Bay are all within comfortable driving distance.
Door County Cottages
Door County Cottages at 7574 Relax Lane offers six secluded cottages near Egg Harbor.
Amenities vary by cottage but include features such as fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, kitchens, decks, fire pits and saunas.
It's an especially good choice for families traveling with dogs. The property's published policies state that there is no additional pet fee or cleaning fee, although pets count toward each cottage's guest limit.
Loma Cottages
Loma Cottages has quickly become one of Door County's most distinctive cabin-style properties.
Set on 10 acres between Egg Harbor, Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor, Loma has six private guest cottages that collectively can accommodate groups of up to 36.
Shared amenities include pickleball, a putting green, barrel saunas, walking trails, yard games and bonfire areas.
The property is family-friendly, although an important clarification for dog owners is that only the Farmhouse and Applewood Cottage currently permit dogs.
The combination of modern design and family recreation makes Loma especially appealing for multi-generational trips.
The Shallows Resort
The Shallows Resort at 7353 Horseshoe Bay Road has more than 400 feet of private Green Bay shoreline.
Families can choose among waterfront lodging, cottages and vacation homes while sharing resort amenities.
The location on the Green Bay side also makes this an excellent sunset spot.
Fish Creek
Fish Creek is arguably the classic Door County family destination. Downtown shops and restaurants are close together, and Peninsula State Park begins almost immediately outside town.
For more ideas beyond lodging, see our Fish Creek Family Guide.
Fish Creek Inn & Cottages
Fish Creek Inn & Cottages offers hotel accommodations plus five cottages near downtown.
Guests have access to an outdoor pool, while the location makes it possible to walk to shops, restaurants and the waterfront.
The biggest selling point may simply be geography: you're staying in Fish Creek without having to drive into Fish Creek every time you want ice cream or dinner.
Large Vacation Homes
Fish Creek is also one of the peninsula's strongest areas for larger private rentals.
Companies such as Simple Life Rentals and JR Vacation Rentals manage homes throughout the Fish Creek and Gibraltar area, including properties designed for multiple families.
For groups, prioritize kitchens, laundry and outdoor gathering space rather than just bedroom count.
The Deck House at Fresh Coast Motel
Baileys Harbor and Kangaroo Lake
Baileys Harbor puts families close to the Ridges Sanctuary, Cana Island Lighthouse, Cave Point, Whitefish Dunes and the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Just inland sits Kangaroo Lake, Door County's largest inland lake at approximately 1,156 acres, according to the Wisconsin DNR.
That creates two very different cabin experiences in one community: rugged Lake Michigan shorelines or calmer inland-lake stays.
Kangaroo Lake Cabins
Numerous cabins and cottages line Kangaroo Lake, ranging from traditional small cottages to large reunion homes.
For families who prioritize swimming, kayaking, fishing and dock access over walkability to restaurants, this area deserves a close look.
Because shoreline, water depth, dock availability and pet policies vary dramatically between individual rentals, verify those features with the owner before booking.
Ephraim
Few communities look more stereotypically "Door County" than Ephraim, with white historic buildings set against Eagle Harbor and wooded bluffs rising behind town.
One outdated fact still appears frequently in travel guides: Ephraim is not dry anymore. Voters ended the village's 163-year prohibition on alcohol sales in 2016, allowing beer and wine sales under local rules.
Pioneer Acres Cottages
Pioneer Acres Cottages at 2965 County Q offers four housekeeping cottages in a quiet wooded location a few blocks from the village center.
The property includes one-, two- and three-bedroom options. Cottages have full kitchens, fireplaces and outdoor grills, and the wooded surroundings provide more separation than you'd get from a typical resort complex.
Pioneer Acres publishes its current 2026 rates directly on its website, making it worth checking there rather than relying on third-party pricing.
Northwind Cottages
Ephraim Vacation Homes operates three Northwind cottages plus additional properties in the area.
The rustic log cottages sit within walking distance of the waterfront and village. Multiple Northwind cottages can also work well for extended families that want to vacation together without everyone sharing the same house.
Several are dog-friendly, but check the specific unit when booking.
Ephraim Village Cottages: Final Season in 2026
One significant lodging change deserves special mention.
Ephraim Village Cottages has announced that 2026 will be its final season. Owner Robin Larson says the final guests will depart September 18, 2026, ending the Larson family's run at the cottage property.
That makes this the last summer to stay there under its current ownership and operation.
Families looking beyond September should not count on the property being available.
Sister Bay
Sister Bay combines resort-town energy with one of Door County's best public waterfronts.
The village has more than 1,900 continuous feet of public water frontage, including roughly 600 feet of sand beach, along with a playground, performance pavilion, kayak access and downtown restaurants.
Check out our full Sister Bay Family Guide for things to do while you're there.
Vacation Homes for Large Groups
Sister Bay has become one of Door County's strongest markets for large vacation homes.
Rent Door County, Simple Life Rentals and other local managers offer homes ranging from smaller cottages to multi-family properties.
For larger groups, Sister Bay's advantage is convenience: restaurants, the beach, marina and downtown activities are clustered much more closely together than in many other parts of the peninsula.
Ellison Bay and Northern Door
North of Sister Bay, Door County starts feeling noticeably wilder.
Ellison Bay provides access to Door Bluff Headlands, the Mink River Estuary and Newport State Park.
Newport State Park is particularly special after dark. It's a designated International Dark Sky Park and one of Wisconsin's best places for stargazing.
This region works best for families who value privacy, paddling, hiking and night skies more than walkable shops.
Rowleys Bay Area
The Rowleys Bay area has a mix of traditional cabins and waterfront vacation homes near the Mink River Estuary.
Large cabins here can be particularly attractive for families bringing kayaks or planning outdoor-focused vacations.
Gills Rock
At the northern end of the mainland peninsula, Gills Rock feels a world removed from the busier villages to the south.
Its biggest practical advantage is proximity to the Washington Island Ferry terminal.
Cabins here tend to appeal to travelers looking for seclusion, bluff views and access to the waters around Death's Door.
Gills Rock is also a useful base if you want to visit Washington Island without actually spending the night there.
Sunrise Log Cabins
Washington Island
Taking the Washington Island Ferry across Death's Door changes the character of a Door County vacation entirely.
During the heart of the 2026 summer season, ferries run frequently between the mainland and island, but schedules vary significantly by season. Always check the current schedule before heading north.
Washington Island also provides the jumping-off point for the passenger ferry to Rock Island State Park, where cars aren't permitted.
Washington Island Campground
Washington Island Campground remains one of the best-value ways for families to stay on the island.
For 2026, cabin rates published by the campground include:
Rustic cabins without toilets: $95/night
Rustic cabins with toilets: $125/night
Deluxe cabins: $140/night
Premium cabin: $170/night
Rustic cabins are pet-friendly for an additional $10 per night; deluxe and premium cabins do not allow pets.
The campground has a swimming pond with sandy beach, playground, volleyball, miniature golf, game room and laundry facilities. Guests staying in cabins need to provide their own linens and cooking/eating utensils.
For families with kids, it's one of the island's strongest combinations of affordability and on-site entertainment.
Four Elements Lodging
Four Elements Lodging offers stylish Scandinavian-inspired cottages near the Washington Island ferry landing.
However, families should know before clicking the reservation button: Four Elements is adults-only, accommodates a maximum of two people per cottage and does not allow pets.
It's an excellent couples option, but it doesn't belong on a list of family cabin recommendations without that qualification.

Seasonal Considerations
Peak Season (June through August) brings the warmest weather, busiest villages, and highest prices. Most properties require 5-7 night minimum stays, and popular cabins book 6-12 months in advance. Water temperatures become swimmable by mid-July. This is when Door County buzzes with fish boils, cherry picking, and outdoor concerts.
Shoulder Season (May and September-October) offers significant savings—often 40-60% lower than peak rates—with shorter minimum stays (2-3 nights common). Fall foliage peaks in mid-October with spectacular color. Many families prefer this quieter time when attractions remain open without summer crowds.
Year-Round Properties operate throughout the winter, offering access to cross-country skiing at Peninsula State Park, snowshoeing, and cozy fireplace evenings. Key year-round options include Door County Cottages (Egg Harbor), Andropolis Cottages (Sturgeon Bay), Northwind Cottages (Ephraim), Simple Life Rentals properties, and many Sister Bay/Fish Creek cabins.
Seasonal-Only Properties (typically May through October/November) include Olson Cottages, Ephraim Village Cottages, Washington Island Campground cabins, and many waterfront cottages. These close when Lake Michigan temperatures drop and ice threatens water lines.
Planning Your Door County Cabin Adventure
The key to a successful Door County family cabin trip lies in matching your family's priorities with the right property and location. For beach time with young children, consider Jacksonport or Baileys Harbor waterfront properties with sandy access. For walkable village experiences, Fish Creek and Sister Bay put dining, shopping, and beaches within strolling distance. For remote wilderness adventures, Ellison Bay provides proximity to Newport State Park's dark sky preserves and pristine kayaking. For the ultimate escape, Washington Island removes your family from the grid entirely.
Book early for summer stays—the best properties reserve a year in advance. Consider shoulder seasons for value and availability. Verify pet policies directly with properties, as restrictions vary widely. And remember: Door County's magic lies not just in its natural beauty, but in slowing down to savor sunsets, s'mores, and unhurried family time together.
Whether you're seeking a rustic log cabin on Kangaroo Lake, a luxury retreat with theater room and pickleball courts, or a budget-friendly campground cabin with swimming pond and mini-golf, Door County's cabin rentals deliver unforgettable family memories on Wisconsin's beautiful peninsula.
