Door County in November: Complete Guide for 2026
The October crowds have disappeared. The trees have mostly dropped their leaves. Summer-only attractions are winding down. But instead of shutting down completely, the peninsula starts transforming into something entirely different: quiet trails, cozy restaurants, uncrowded shops, Christmas lights, holiday markets and small-town celebrations.
In fact, November gives families two distinctly different Door County experiences in one month. Come early and you'll find a peaceful late-fall getaway built around hiking, scenic drives, art studios and shopping. Come around Thanksgiving weekend and Door County suddenly feels like a Hallmark movie, with tree lightings, reindeer, holiday markets, hot cocoa and several villages celebrating at once.
If this is your first trip to the peninsula, start with our complete Door County family travel guide or first-timer's guide to Door County. Families with younger travelers will also find plenty of ideas in our Door County with kids guide.
Why Visit Door County in November?
November is Door County's transition from fall into its quiet winter season. That means fewer visitors, easier parking and a much slower pace than you'll find during summer or peak October weekends. It also means planning matters: many seasonal businesses reduce their hours or close altogether once November arrives. Sturgeon Bay generally has the largest collection of dependable year-round businesses, while Fish Creek and Sister Bay remain good northern bases with a smaller selection of restaurants, shops and activities.
That quieter atmosphere is part of the appeal. You can walk through Peninsula State Park without fighting for parking, browse downtown shops without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds and actually linger over breakfast or coffee.
And beginning in mid-to-late November, the holiday season starts arriving in a big way.
Door County November 2026 Events: Dates to Know
Several major November events already have their 2026 dates posted:
November 1: The Door County Christmas Movie Trail launches for the season, connecting locations featured in the Door County-filmed holiday movie A Cherry Pie Christmas.
November 6–7:Egg Harbor Sweater Weather brings shopping specials, treats, giveaways and prizes to businesses around the village.
Beginning November 16: The Merry-Time Festival of Trees fills the Door County Maritime Museum with decorated Christmas trees, wreaths and holiday displays.
November 20: Sturgeon Bay kicks off its Christmas by the Bay celebration with the city's holiday tree lighting. The parade follows later on December 5.
November 27:Egg Harbor Holly Days returns with children's activities, horse-drawn wagon rides, caroling and an old-fashioned tree lighting. The village has confirmed the 2026 date, although the detailed activity schedule currently posted is still based on 2025 and is subject to change.
November 27–28: Sister Bay's Capture the Spirit includes Santa, reindeer and elves, holiday crafts, hot cocoa, a village lighting and Storytime with Santa.
November 27–29: The Door County Christkindlmarkt opens its first weekend at the Corner of the Past Museum in Sister Bay, with artisan vendors, Northern European food, holiday music and a heated tent. It returns December 4–6 and December 11–13.
Based on the currently published calendars, November 27–29 is easily the biggest November weekend for a family holiday trip, since you can combine Egg Harbor's Holly Days, Sister Bay's Capture the Spirit and the Christkindlmarkt in one getaway.
Explore the Door County Christmas Movie Trail
Here's something newer to add to your November itinerary.
Door County served as the backdrop for A Cherry Pie Christmas, and the Door County Christmas Movie Trail turns locations from the film into a self-guided trip around the peninsula. The trail launches November 1, making it a particularly good fit for families looking for something different to do during otherwise quiet early-November weekends.
Locations associated with the movie have included Door County Coffee, Lautenbach's Orchard Country Winery, White Gull Inn, Eagle Tower, Anderson Dock, the Tug John Purves, Door County Trolley Station and other familiar Door County landmarks.
It's essentially a ready-made excuse for a November Door County road trip.
Go Hiking Without the Summer Crowds
November probably won't deliver October's spectacular leaf color, but it delivers something else: solitude.
Peninsula State Park remains open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. year-round, and its 20 miles of hiking trails include everything from the relatively easy Sentinel Trail to the rocky, challenging Eagle Trail below the Niagara Escarpment. A Wisconsin state park vehicle admission sticker is required.
One important November detail: don't assume Eagle Tower will be accessible. The DNR considers its normal season approximately May 1 through October 31, although it may remain open later when weather permits. Snow, frost or slippery conditions can close the tower.
For more options beyond Peninsula, use our complete Door County hiking guide. Potawatomi State Park near Sturgeon Bay, Whitefish Dunes State Park near Jacksonport and Newport State Park near Ellison Bay all offer excellent shoulder-season hiking.
November is also a great month to take the 66-mile Door County Coastal Byway. Without summer traffic, you can actually enjoy the drive and spontaneously pull into overlooks, parks and villages along the way.
Make Something at Hands On Art Studio
When the November weather stops cooperating, head to Hands On Art Studio near Fish Creek.
Families can paint pottery, work with mosaics, make jewelry, create fused glass and tackle other art projects across the studio's funky collection of barns and buildings.
Best of all, it doesn't disappear for the winter. Beginning November 2, Hands On Art Studio currently lists winter hours of Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with projects needing to be started by 3:30 p.m. Special holiday hours can vary.
We've collected more weatherproof ideas in our guide to indoor activities for families in Door County.
Spend a Day in Sturgeon Bay
If you're nervous about visiting Door County during the off-season, make Sturgeon Bay your home base.
Unlike many of the smaller resort villages farther north, Sturgeon Bay is a year-round working community, which gives families more dependable choices for groceries, restaurants, shopping and indoor entertainment. Our complete Sturgeon Bay guide breaks down everything worth seeing.
The centerpiece is the Door County Maritime Museum, where kids can explore Door County's shipbuilding, lighthouse and Great Lakes history. The Sturgeon Bay museum is open year-round, and the Jim Kress Maritime Lighthouse Tower gives the waterfront museum one of the most recognizable silhouettes in town.
Beginning in mid-November, the museum also becomes much more festive with the Merry-Time Festival of Trees. Pair it with a walk across the downtown bridges and shopping along Historic Third Avenue.
Then return November 20 for Sturgeon Bay's holiday tree lighting.
Shop Your Way Through the Peninsula
November is an excellent time to tackle Door County Christmas shopping.
Sturgeon Bay's Historic Third Avenue is especially dependable during the off-season, while Egg Harbor, Fish Creek and Sister Bay still have a collection of locally owned shops that remain open into the holiday season. Hours become much less predictable after October, however, so check individual stores before building an entire trip around them.
Egg Harbor makes shopping the actual event during Sweater Weather November 6–7, when participating shops offer treats, giveaways and in-store prizes.
By Thanksgiving weekend, the Christkindlmarkt in Sister Bay becomes the star. The European-inspired outdoor market is spread through the historic buildings and grounds of the Corner of the Past Museum and adds Christmas huts, artisans, food vendors, Northern European fare and warm drinks.
If boutique shopping is your primary goal, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, Sister Bay and Sturgeon Bay are the communities we'd prioritize.
Take One Last Ghost Tour
Halloween may be finished, but Door County isn't done being spooky.
Door County Trolley's Ghost Tour continues through November, departing at 6 p.m. during October and November. The 2½-hour evening tour visits locations tied to shipwrecks, haunted lighthouses, cemeteries and Door County ghost stories. Advance tickets are recommended.
It's an especially fun early-November activity for families with older kids or teens.
Door County Trolley also operates a variety of wine, spirits, food and off-season tours, so check its current tour schedule if the weather makes a self-guided road trip less appealing.
Where to Eat in Door County in November
This is the part of a November trip that requires the most advance planning.
Plenty of Door County restaurants are seasonal, and a place you visited in July may be closed completely or operating only a few days each week by November. Don't rely on Google hours alone without checking the restaurant's own website or social media.
Sturgeon Bay offers the greatest concentration of year-round dining, while Sister Bay and Fish Creek still have some dependable off-season favorites. Our Door County restaurant guide for families is the best place to start, and our Door County breakfast guide can help with the most important meal on a cold November morning.
One advantage of traveling now: this is the season to stop rushing from attraction to attraction. Find a coffee shop, order something warm, and stay awhile.
Where to Stay in November
Your choice of town matters more in November than it does in July.
Sturgeon Bay is our pick for families who want the greatest number of restaurants, shops and indoor backups.
Egg Harbor makes a convenient central base, especially for the November 6–7 Sweater Weather weekend or Holly Days.
Fish Creek puts you right beside Peninsula State Park and near Hands On Art Studio.
Sister Bay is the obvious choice for Thanksgiving weekend, when Capture the Spirit and Christkindlmarkt are happening almost simultaneously.
November through April is the period when a significant share of Door County's seasonal lodging shuts down, although a number of hotels, inns and resorts remain open year-round.

A Great November Weekend in Door County
Friday: Drive up after school or work and make Sturgeon Bay your first stop. Walk Third Avenue, grab dinner and, if you're visiting November 20, stay downtown for the Christmas tree lighting.
Saturday: Start with breakfast, then hike Peninsula State Park before temperatures drop later in the day. Spend the afternoon at Hands On Art Studio or shopping in Fish Creek and Sister Bay. During Thanksgiving weekend, substitute Capture the Spirit and the Christkindlmarkt and make Sister Bay the center of the day.
Sunday: Head south slowly. Stop in Egg Harbor, browse shops, grab coffee or lunch and leave room for one final scenic stop before heading back toward Milwaukee.
That slower itinerary is really the secret to November. Don't try to recreate your July Door County vacation. November works because you're doing less.
What to Know Before You Go
November weather in Door County can swing from a crisp sunny hiking day to cold rain, strong lake winds or early snow. Pack waterproof shoes, warm layers, hats and gloves even if Milwaukee feels relatively mild when you leave. Our winter guide to Door County has more cold-weather planning advice.
Also build flexibility into your schedule. November operating hours can change quickly, particularly Monday through Thursday. Check official websites before driving across the peninsula for one restaurant, store or attraction.
And remember that darkness arrives early. Save hikes, scenic overlooks and lakefront exploration for the middle of the day, then transition to dinner, shopping, art studios and holiday events later in the afternoon.
Is November a Good Time to Visit Door County?
Absolutely — as long as you understand what November is.
This isn't the month for beaches, boating and a packed schedule of summer attractions. It is the month for quiet trails, uncrowded villages, fireplaces, coffee, locally owned shops and the first glow of Christmas lights along the peninsula.
For families who love the traditional Door County experience but could live without the summer traffic, November might actually be one of the best times to discover a completely different side of the peninsula.
And if you can choose just one weekend, November 27–29, 2026 is the one we'd circle. With Holly Days in Egg Harbor, Capture the Spirit in Sister Bay and the opening weekend of Christkindlmarkt all happening during the same stretch, Door County goes from quiet season to Christmas magic almost overnight.
