Night of the Ghost Train Returns for Halloween 2026

One of Shorewood's coolest Halloween traditions is returning.

Night of the Ghost Train is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, giving families a perfect second stop after an afternoon of trick-or-treating.

The Village of Shorewood's current 2026 calendar lists the celebration from 7–9 p.m. on Halloween night.

And because Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, families can make an entire day of it.

The village's Public Art Committee has already begun planning this year's celebration.

What Is Shorewood's Ghost Train?

The Ghost Train isn't actually a train.

It's a permanent public art installation that uses synchronized lights and sound to recreate the experience of a historic passenger train roaring across the bridge over Capitol Drive.

The installation honors the Twin Cities 400, a Chicago & North Western passenger train that traveled through Shorewood from 1935 through 1963.

The train was famous for covering roughly 400 miles between Chicago and St. Paul in about 400 minutes.

Today, the former rail corridor is part of the Oak Leaf Trail.

Every evening, the bridge comes alive with lights and sounds designed to recreate the drama of the train passing overhead.

What Happens at Night of the Ghost Train?

Night of the Ghost Train turns the everyday installation into a Halloween celebration.

Traditionally, the event has included:

• Special Ghost Train programs

• A children's costume contest

• Ghost stories

• Free refreshments while supplies last

• Special evening Ghost Train runs

• Halloween fun surrounding the Capitol Drive bridge

The Village's standing Ghost Train information page describes the annual event as including special runs at 8 and 8:15 p.m.

However, there's one timing change families should know about for 2026.

The Village's dedicated Ghost Train page still describes the traditional event window as 6:30–8:30 p.m., while Shorewood's current 2026 municipal calendar lists this year's event from 7–9 p.m.

Where to Watch the Ghost Train

The installation is located at the Oak Leaf Trail bridge over Capitol Drive.

For a regular Ghost Train showing, popular viewing locations include the area near the bridge and businesses around Capitol Drive.

The train currently runs twice each evening.

September 1 through March 31

Northbound: 7 p.m.

Southbound: 7:15 p.m.

April 1 through August 31

Northbound: 9 p.m.

Southbound: 9:15 p.m.

The bridge also features seasonal programs, including a Holiday Express in December and a Circus Train during warmer months.
