Mequon Commons: A New Hub for Activities on the Horizon
Mequon is planning a major transformation of its civic campus area — a 30-year project called Mequon Commons that aims to create a multigenerational community gathering space for families.
The Lakota Group, a Chicago-based design firm, is working with the city to reimagine the area around City Hall, the library, and Rennicke Field. The vision? To create what city planners are calling "the living room of the community" — a welcoming hub that celebrates Mequon's identity while bringing families together.
The development area spans from Division Street to Mequon Road, bordered by Cedarburg Road and the Ozaukee Interurban Trail.
Family-Friendly Features on the Radar
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, while plans are still in the conceptual phase, here's what North Shore families can look forward to:
The Pool Takes Priority: City alderpersons agreed that updating the city's pool should be the first project tackled — great news for families looking to cool off during those hot Wisconsin summers.
Outdoor Gathering Spaces: The plan includes new plazas, paths, and green spaces perfect for picnics, community events, and outdoor play.
Connection to Nature: Expanding access to nature is a core principle, with proximity to the Ozaukee Interurban Trail offering excellent biking and walking opportunities.
Baseball's Future: The historic Rennicke Field may be relocated as part of the project, with community members calling for a field of similar or better quality if it moves. The Thiensville-Mequon Youth Baseball Association is actively involved in discussions.
Year-Round Activities: There's talk of adding a community center-style building that could host family events and activities throughout the year, not just during the warmer months.
When Will This Happen?
Don't expect overnight changes: This is a 20-30 year phased rollout, with a final master plan expected by late 2025 or early 2026. The city plans to start with core infrastructure and high-priority amenities (like that pool!), then gradually add more features as funding becomes available.
While the project is still in the planning stages, it's clear that active outdoor family activities — from swimming and baseball to biking and community gatherings — are at the heart of the vision.
