Mequon Library Summer Reading Returns for 2026
Summer reading season is almost here at the Frank L. Weyenberg Library, and this year’s challenge brings plenty of reasons for kids, teens and adults to keep reading, exploring and visiting the library all summer long.
Families can sign up in person at the library and receive a paper reading log to track reading and activities throughout the summer. Whether your child is already a book lover, needs a little extra motivation, or just enjoys earning prizes and attending special events, the Summer Reading Challenge is an easy way to make reading part of the season.
Summer Reading Events for Children
The children’s summer lineup begins with a bubbly kickoff celebration.
The 2026 Summer Reading Kickoff Party will be held on Friday, June 12 at 10:00 a.m. and features Marvelous Michelle, also known as The Bubble Lady. Michelle has been bringing bubble fun throughout Wisconsin for years, including right here in the Milwaukee area. Kids can enjoy the show, experience the joy of bubbles and sign up for the summer reading program during their visit.
Animal lovers will want to mark Thursday, July 16 on the calendar for GEE Funny Farm, with sessions at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. GEE Funny Farm is a 44-acre farm home to a wide variety of animals, from llamas to pygmy hedgehogs. Smaller animals may include snakes, a tortoise, parrots, a chinchilla, rabbits and more. Registration is required and can be completed at the Children’s Desk, Adult Info Desk or by calling 262-242-2593 ext. 330.
On Thursday, August 6 at 1:00 p.m., the library will host Mark Hayward’s Yo-Yo Show. His performance combines comedy, object manipulation and yo-yo tricks in a show designed to entertain both kids and adults.
Summer Reading Events for Teens
Teens and tweens have their own special events this summer, including the 2026 Battle of the Books: FLW Edition.
Registration is open May 3 through June 20. The event is open to students entering 5th through 8th grade in the fall. Teams may include 2 to 4 players, and participants do not need to be Mequon-Thiensville residents. Space is limited.
The battle will take place at the Frank L. Weyenberg Library on Thursday, July 23 at 6:00 p.m. and is expected to last about 60 to 90 minutes.
Teens ages 12 to 18 can also join a six-session, in-person Dungeons & Dragons campaign on select summer dates. No experience is necessary, and registration is required. To join, visit the Adult Info Desk, email kbillings@flwlib.org, or call 262-242-2593 ext. 320.
Dungeons & Dragons sessions will be held on select Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. and select Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m.
Summer Reading Events for Adults
Adults and older kids can get creative during Tiny Seeds, Big Creations: Craft Hour at the Library, held on:
Tuesday, June 23 at 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, July 21 at 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, August 18 at 6:00 p.m.
Each month, the library will provide basic supplies for a specific craft. Participants are welcome to bring extra supplies if they would like. The program is open to ages 10 and up, and registration is required because supplies are limited.
History fans can attend Wisconsin Was There in the Civil War on Thursday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. The presentation will focus on three lesser-known Wisconsin Civil War stories tied to major events, including the 8th Wisconsin in the Vicksburg Campaign, Arthur MacArthur at Missionary Ridge and William Cushing’s sinking of the CSS Albemarle in North Carolina.
The presentation will be given by Christopher Kolakowski, Director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. Kolakowski leads the museum and research center that honors Wisconsin veterans and preserves the state’s military history.
