Sendik’s Is Open. What’s Still Changing on Silver Spring?
The new Whitefish Bay Sendik’s has opened, but the work outside the store continues. Construction around Silver Spring Drive is rebuilding parts of four streets and changing how people cross, park and drive near the market.
Some improvements are already visible. Others—including a new traffic signal—are still ahead. Here is what Village of Whitefish Bay project updates and recent Public Works documents say is happening.
Beaumont Avenue’s drainage upgrade
Behind Sendik’s, the stretch of Beaumont Avenue between Consaul Place and Lake Drive is being reconstructed for angled parking. The village also approved permeable pavers for the parking spaces, with a layer of stone beneath them that can temporarily hold rainwater instead of sending it immediately into the storm sewer.
A village engineering memo estimates that the paver design could hold about 62,000 gallons during typical storms. The work also includes a new 24-inch storm sewer and additional inlets along Beaumont. The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District awarded funding for the pervious parking project; the Village Board approved using that funding and village development district funds to cover the pavers’ added cost.
That makes Beaumont’s new appearance more than a parking change. Much of its purpose is underground, in an area where the village has identified stormwater concerns.
Lake Drive and Beaumont: New crossing
At Lake Drive and Beaumont, the village reports that a pedestrian refuge median and curb extensions are complete. The extensions bring the curb farther into the street, while the median gives someone crossing Lake Drive a place to pause between directions of traffic.
The September Public Works update also lists a rectangular rapid flashing beacon—the kind pedestrians activate before crossing—as part of the intersection project. It expected substantial completion in late September, but did not establish in that report that the beacon was already operating. Lake Drive had reopened to two-way traffic by the time of the update.
Silver Spring and Hollywood pedestrian refuge
The crossing at Silver Spring Drive and Hollywood Avenue is changing with a new pedestrian median and curb extensions. As of the September Public Works report, the refuge island and curb extensions on the north side had been poured, with substantial completion anticipated in late September.
The broader Sendik’s street work also includes sidewalk and curb replacement, landscaping, resurfacing, water-main work and changes to parking. The village describes it as a public improvement project extending beyond the store’s property.
Where is the new traffic light going?
The new signal is planned for Silver Spring Drive at Consaul Place and Diversey Boulevard. The village says utility, electrical conduit and curb work were progressing there in September. Because the signal poles have a long lead time, it expected installation in November 2026.
It is easy to mix this up with the signal at Lake Drive, Silver Spring Drive and Marlborough Drive. The village undertook a replacement project at that intersection in 2024. For the Sendik’s redevelopment, the traffic study in the village’s review materials recommends adjusting the existing signal’s timing and coordinating it with the new Consaul/Diversey signal. The current project updates identify Consaul/Diversey as the location of the new light.

In its update for the week of September 28, the village says Silver Spring Drive has returned to two-way traffic, though brief lane closures and delays remain possible. Sidewalk has been installed around the construction site, but some intersection corners still need brick pavers and are not yet safe to cross. Parking restrictions are being lifted in places along Silver Spring, Lake Drive and Consaul Place; posted signs and bagged meters still govern individual spaces.
The new two-story Sendik’s opened September 23. Its opening is a major milestone for the block, but it is not the end of the street work. The village’s September project report lists 2027 as the target completion year for the overall Sendik’s public improvements, even as several of the most visible crossings were expected to be substantially finished this fall.
