Door County Beach & Waterfront Rentals: 40+ Stays
Door County’s more than 300 miles of shoreline give families an unusual number of ways to stay right along the water — from sandy Lake Michigan beaches to quiet Green Bay coves, cottage resorts and private waterfront homes.
But “waterfront” can mean very different things in Door County.
Some of the properties below have a true private sand beach. Others have private rocky shoreline, docks or direct water access. And a few are included because they put families exceptionally close to one of Door County’s best public beaches.
This guide makes those differences clear so you can find the right kind of Door County waterfront stay for your family.

Before you book
One geographic distinction matters.
The Green Bay side — including Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay — generally offers more protected water and spectacular sunsets.
Door County’s Lake Michigan side — Jacksonport, Baileys Harbor and the eastern shoreline — feels wilder, with sunrise views, larger waves and some beautiful stretches of sand.
Door County officially promotes more than 300 miles of shoreline, with dozens of public beaches scattered around the peninsula. If you don’t need your beach to be private, see our guide to Wisconsin’s best beaches, which includes several Door County favorites.
Sturgeon Bay and southern Door County
Glidden Lodge Beach Resort
Glidden Lodge Beach Resort remains one of the strongest options for families specifically searching for a private sandy beach.
The resort has 31 one-, two- and three-bedroom waterfront condo units along a 700-foot Lake Michigan sand beach. Amenities include an indoor pool, whirlpool, tennis, basketball and volleyball, and the resort is open year-round.
Its location also puts families close to Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park.
Best for: Families who want a true resort and a substantial private sand beach.
Gold Coast Waterfront Cottage
This renovated cottage on Sturgeon Bay’s waterfront is a smaller alternative to the large resorts and offers private waterfront access in a residential setting.
Because vacation-rental listings, hosts and policies can change, check the current Airbnb listing before booking.
Best for: Families seeking a private cottage rather than a full-service resort.
Sand Bay Lodge and Cottages
Sand Bay Lodge and Cottages is particularly appealing for larger families and multi-generational trips.
The property combines a large main lodge with separate cottages and private Sand Bay shoreline, plus a dock, fire pit and recreation space.
If you’re traveling with a big group, also see our guide to Door County lodging for large families and groups.
Best for: Reunions and multi-family trips.
Jacksonport: sandy Lake Michigan shoreline
Jacksonport is one of our favorite areas for families who want Door County’s quieter Lake Michigan side. It combines long stretches of shoreline with easy access to Cave Point and Whitefish Dunes.
Square Rigger Lodge
Square Rigger Lodge sits directly along 286 feet of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline.
The property offers motel rooms, cottages, a suite and a rental house. It also has a fun distinction: Square Rigger operates what it describes as Door County’s only beachfront coffee shop, serving coffee, smoothies, baked goods and quiche during its operating season.
Best for: Families who want a casual, old-school Door County beach stay.
Sunrise Shores Condominiums
Sunrise Shores Condominiums consists of three condo units along 190 feet of private sand beach.
Units include kitchens, fireplaces and outdoor gathering areas, making this a particularly good choice for families who want more space than a traditional hotel room.
Best for: Condo space directly on the sand.
Little White Cottage on the Lake
Available through Simple Life Rentals, this updated 1950s cottage offers shared private lake access along a sandy Jacksonport shoreline.
The shallow water and sandbar can make this stretch especially attractive to families, although Lake Michigan conditions can change quickly and children should always be supervised near the water.
Best for: A classic cottage experience.
Olson Cottages
Olson Cottages are an old-school Door County tradition along Elmira Beach.
The cottages are known for their rustic character, fireplaces and lakeside setting. Availability can be difficult during the most popular summer weeks, so this is one to investigate well in advance.
Best for: Families who value tradition over resort-style amenities.
Door County Premium Rentals
Door County Premium Rentals manages higher-end homes around the Jacksonport and Lake Michigan shoreline, including large waterfront houses well suited to extended-family trips.
Inventory can change, so browse the company’s current waterfront collection rather than relying on an individual home remaining available year after year.
Best for: Upscale family houses and longer stays.
Egg Harbor: sunset-side family stays
Egg Harbor combines convenient access to the rest of the peninsula with calmer Green Bay waters.
The Shallows Resort
The Shallows Resort has welcomed Door County vacationers since 1968 and sits along 400 feet of private Green Bay shoreline.
Guests have access to the heated outdoor pool, kayaks, canoes, bikes, tennis, fire pits and other family-friendly amenities.
One update from earlier versions of this guide: The Shallows now references new ownership, so we no longer describe it as being under three generations of the same family ownership.
Best for: A true family resort experience directly on Green Bay.
Landmark Resort
Landmark Resort is not a private-beach resort, so it belongs in a slightly different category.
Its blufftop location offers Green Bay views, condo-style accommodations and extensive family amenities, including indoor and outdoor pools.
Our Pick for families who care more about resort amenities than having sand immediately outside the room.
Door County Cottage Retreat
This newer vacation home through DoCo Vacations offers a large family-friendly property near Egg Harbor.
It is not directly on a private beach, so we would choose it for its space and proximity to Egg Harbor rather than as a true beachfront rental.
Fish Creek and Peninsula State Park
Fish Creek is a great choice if your family wants water access plus immediate proximity to Peninsula State Park.
See our complete Fish Creek family guide for restaurants, beaches, hiking and things to do nearby.
Edgewater Cottages Fish Creek
Edgewater Cottages Fish Creek offers a collection of cottages along Fish Creek’s harbor, with a private dock and walkable access to the village.
Peninsula State Park and its popular Nicolet Beach are nearby.
Best for: Families who want waterfront views and walkable Fish Creek.
Fish Creek Beach House
Available through Rent Door County, Fish Creek Beach House is designed for larger groups and includes waterfront access, a private dock and substantial gathering space.
Best for: Larger families wanting their own waterfront home.
Ephraim: protected Eagle Harbor waterfront
Ephraim is one of Door County’s most scenic waterfront villages, and Eagle Harbor offers some of the peninsula’s prettiest sunset views.
Edgewater Resort
Edgewater Resort sits directly on Eagle Harbor and operates year-round.
The resort offers condos, rooms, studios and private cottages, plus a private beach, dock, outdoor pool and hot tub. Select accommodations welcome dogs.
Best for: Families wanting a waterfront resort within walking distance of Ephraim.
Ephraim Village Cottages
Ephraim Village Cottages offers cottages in a shaded village setting rather than directly on a private beach.
The appeal is location: families can walk to Ephraim’s waterfront and village attractions while still having cottage-style space, kitchens and outdoor recreation.
Best for: Families wanting a cottage near the beach rather than directly on it.
Hillside Waterfront Hotel
Hillside Waterfront Hotel combines boutique accommodations with larger cottages.
Families should focus specifically on the cottage options, since some of Hillside’s hotel accommodations have adult-only restrictions.
Best for: A more upscale Ephraim waterfront getaway.
Pine Grove Resort
Pine Grove Resort sits directly on Eagle Harbor and is one of the easiest properties in this guide to book through our Expedia collection.
Most guestrooms feature water views, and the waterfront Ephraim location puts families close to Peninsula State Park, Wilson’s and the rest of the village.
Our Pick for an easy-to-book Ephraim waterfront stay.
See Pine Grove Resort on Expedia
Baileys Harbor: Lake Michigan, nature and lighthouses
Baileys Harbor puts families close to The Ridges Sanctuary, Cana Island Lighthouse and the quieter eastern side of Door County.
If lighthouses are part of your trip, bookmark our complete guide to Door County’s 11 lighthouses.
Gordon Lodge
Gordon Lodge sits on 130 acres along North Bay.
The property has about a half-mile of shoreline, including a 300-foot private sandy beach, plus hiking trails, a seasonal outdoor pool and on-property recreation.
It has also added the Kiln floating sauna along its pier.
Our Pick for families who want a destination resort surrounded by nature.
Check Gordon Lodge availability
Beachfront Inn
Beachfront Inn is a genuine Lake Michigan beach hotel right in Baileys Harbor.
Its relatively small size gives it more of an updated beach-motel feel than a sprawling resort. Families get direct shoreline access, and dog-friendly rooms are available.
Best for: Families who want the beach and downtown Baileys Harbor in the same trip.
Baileys Harbor Yacht Club Resort
Baileys Harbor Yacht Club Resort offers waterfront access along with indoor and outdoor pools, a hot tub, sauna, playground, bicycles and other resort amenities.
That combination is especially useful when Lake Michigan weather doesn’t cooperate.
Best for: Families who want waterfront scenery plus backup rainy-day recreation.
Cedar Coast Cottage
Available through Rent Door County, Cedar Coast Cottage offers a more private Lake Michigan setting surrounded by woods.
Best for: Families seeking privacy and a house rather than resort amenities.
Mary’s Beach House
Mary’s Beach House is designed for larger groups and sits along the Baileys Harbor waterfront.
Because private vacation-rental pricing and availability change frequently, confirm current details directly before planning around it.
Best for: Extended-family gatherings.
Herewego North Bay Rentals
Herewego North Bay Rentals offers a lakefront home between Baileys Harbor and Sister Bay with shoreline access and a setting geared toward families and groups.
Best for: Families looking for a private northern Door County home.
Sister Bay: waterfront plus walkability
Sister Bay has one of Door County’s best public waterfront parks, making it possible to stay near an excellent beach without paying specifically for private sand.
Sister Bay Beach Condos
Sister Bay Beach Condos sit across from the village waterfront.
This is public-beach access rather than a private beach, but the combination of water views and walkability to Sister Bay restaurants and activities is hard to beat.
Best for: Families who want to park the car and walk.
Country House Resort
Country House Resort occupies 27 wooded acres with 1,100 feet of private shoreline overlooking Sister Bay.
There is an important family caveat: guests must be 13 or older.
For families traveling with teenagers, its secluded waterfront setting, shoreline trail and resort amenities can be an excellent match.
Best for: Families with teens and couples.
Twin Peaks at Sand Bay
Available through Northern Door Vacations, Twin Peaks provides a large vacation home with private Lake Michigan beach access north of Sister Bay.
Best for: Multi-generational groups wanting their own beach house.
Wismar Cabin on Sand Bay
Also managed by Northern Door Vacations, Wismar Cabin offers a smaller, more rustic lakefront experience with a sandy shoreline and fireplace.
Best for: Couples or smaller families seeking classic Door County cabin atmosphere.
Eagle Sands Beach Lodge
Available through Rent Door County, Eagle Sands Beach Lodge is a large log-home-style rental with private waterfront.
Best for: Extended families and multi-generational trips.
Ellison Bay and Gills Rock
Northern Door County gets increasingly quiet as you move beyond Sister Bay toward Ellison Bay, Gills Rock and Newport State Park.
Camp Door
Available through Lundquist Realty, Camp Door offers a renovated Lake Michigan home in the Ellison Bay area with private waterfront access.
Birch Isle Cottage
Northern Door Vacations manages this cottage near Ellison Bay, putting families within easy reach of Newport State Park and the northern peninsula.
Shoreline Village Condominiums
Shoreline Village Condominiums sits along Hedgehog Harbor in Gills Rock and offers waterfront condo accommodations near the marina.
Terra Cottages
Terra Cottages offers traditional seasonal cottages near Hedgehog Harbor.
This is better considered a northern Door County cottage base than a traditional private-sand-beach resort.
Casa Del Lago
Casa Del Lago provides a private-home waterfront experience in the Gills Rock area, with Green Bay views from the far northern peninsula.
Private rental availability can change, so verify current booking information before planning around it.
Rowleys Bay: close to Door County wilderness
Rowleys Bay Resort
Rowleys Bay Resort is one of the most substantial lodging operations in northern Door County and sits next to the Mink River Estuary.
The property offers a variety of rooms, suites, cottages and vacation homes along with Grandma’s Swedish Bakery and access to outdoor recreation.
Best for: Families who want to be close to Newport State Park and the wild northern end of the peninsula.
Rowleys Bay Lakefront Home
Rent Door County also manages private homes around Rowleys Bay, including waterfront options near the Mink River Estuary.
Best for: Families wanting a private house instead of the resort.
Washington Island: the most remote waterfront getaway
Getting to Washington Island requires taking the Washington Island Ferry from the tip of the peninsula.
Once you arrive, the pace changes completely.
Schoolhouse Beach is one of Wisconsin’s most distinctive beaches, although its famous shoreline is made of smooth limestone rather than sand.
Sunset Resort
Sunset Resort sits on 500 feet of natural Green Bay shoreline surrounded by approximately 40 wooded acres.
The family-operated resort dates to 1902 and has become one of Washington Island’s longtime lodging traditions.
Best for: A classic Washington Island stay with sunset views.
Gibson’s West Harbor Resort
Gibson’s West Harbor Resort combines historic island character with extensive shoreline, cottages and guest rooms.
Its location and available watercraft make it particularly appealing to families who want an active island vacation.
Above and Beyond Cottage
This private Washington Island cottage offers an especially large stretch of west-side waterfront.
Confirm current rental availability directly before planning a trip around it.
Cedar Point Inn
Cedar Point Inn offers a house-and-suite style option near the ferry and includes private lake access for guests.
Trueblood Cottage
This historic Detroit Harbor cottage can periodically be found on vacation-rental platforms.
Because individual Airbnb listings can be renamed, removed or transferred, search by property name rather than relying on an old listing number.
Gull Cottage
Another private island rental, Gull Cottage works well for families wanting a full house and waterfront setting.
Confirm current pet fees, minimum stays and availability with the host.
Amazing Sunsets Cottage
This west-side Washington Island property combines substantial waterfront with broad sunset views.
As with other privately managed homes, confirm the current platform and host before booking.
Door Passage Vacation Rentals
Door Passage Vacation Rentals manages multiple Washington Island homes, making it useful when a particular individual cottage is unavailable.

Which Door County waterfront area is best for your family?
Families with younger children: Start with Egg Harbor, Ephraim and other Green Bay-side communities. The more protected bay waters are generally a better starting point for a family swimming trip, although conditions can change anywhere.
Families who want a sandy private beach: Put Glidden Lodge, Square Rigger Lodge, Sunrise Shores and Gordon Lodge near the top of your list.
Families who want resort amenities: Consider Gordon Lodge, The Shallows, Pine Grove, Landmark Resort or Baileys Harbor Yacht Club Resort.
Families with teenagers: Country House Resort becomes an interesting option because its minimum guest age is 13.
Large families and reunions: Look at Sand Bay Lodge, Rent Door County, Door County Premium Rentals, Northern Door Vacations and other whole-home managers.
Families who want to walk everywhere: Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay offer the strongest combinations of waterfront access, restaurants, shopping and attractions.
Families wanting a true escape: Go north to Rowleys Bay, Gills Rock or Washington Island.
How early should you book?
Summer waterfront inventory is some of the most sought-after lodging in Door County.
Rather than relying on a blanket “book six to twelve months ahead” rule, our advice is simpler: once your summer dates are firm, start looking.
Weekly waterfront houses and traditional cottage resorts often have much less inventory than hotels, particularly around July and August.
Spring, September and October can provide more flexibility, although swimming conditions and seasonal business hours will differ.
Whenever possible, compare the property’s own booking site with major booking platforms before reserving.
